Vortex ST-5 overview

  • 1Description

The Summit SS-P Aluminum Tripod with 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head from Vortex is a lightweight 5-section aluminum tripod that can hold 5 lb worth of gear. It extends up to 54.5" and folds down to just 14" for travel. It has a split center column so that when one section is removed the tripod can reach a minimum height of just 6.3". A ballast hook on the bottom of the center column allows you to add weight to increase the tripod's stability.

The included 3-way pan/tilt head has one handle that locks and unlocks the panning and tilting, and a locking knob that controls the plate angle adjustment. A quick-release plate allows you to quickly attach or detach your camera, binoculars, or spotting scope from the tripod. Additionally, a carrying case is included to protect your tripod during transport.

    Vortex ST-5 reviews

Summit SS-P Aluminum Tripod Kit with 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Light, functions well, but has drawbacks The tripod is super light, the head moves smoothly with a ton of adjustment and works in all conditions I had it in. My issues is with the twist lock legs. The twist locks made it difficult to get the legs to extend evenly, and it always seemed like one side never wanted to lock. I cant count how many times I went to put my binos or spotting scope of and one of the legs would collapse. I found myself not using the tripod as much because of this. set up and tear down was not as easy as a flip lock. If you need to save some weight this is the tripod for you. If you can spare an extra half pound then I would go with a flip lock for the ease of set up and tear down. You will never have to wonder if the legs are locked

Rated 3 out of 5 by from decent tripod Used the tripod several times. It's decent for the price. Holds up well in a heavy wind, 25-40 constant wind held steady with a hand on the scope. Only complaint is the quick detach has way to much slop in it. Had to add several layers of electrical tape to mitigate it. Helped a little but still way to sloppy in my opinion. Quick detach loves to come loose so make sure to throw some loktite on it or it will come loose very quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best value for money tripod in exsistance! To give a bit of a background, I'm a professional wildlife film maker and have used all types of tripods in the field, some worth up to $20,000. I could not believe the quality of this tripod when i received it. Everything has been thought out so carefully... and the fact that a tripod of this blue has the amazing Vortex warranty blows my mind. This is why i felt compelled to write a review. Legs extend and lock with utmost ease usually seen in only high-end sticks. The head is surprisingly smooth. The constructions is fantastic and feels like quality. The legs are extremely versatile and can even be placed flat open on the ground. It has a really solid weight hook this ting lightweight tripod in winds and uneven ground. As always, very impressed with Vortex and now you have won a life long customer. Thank you Devon Massyn www.devonmassyn.com

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tripod! I use this with my vortex spotting scope (with the adapter) for hunting in the mountains and it works very well. The tripod is pretty light weight and seems to be very durable. I haven't had any problems with it. I really like how adjustable the tripod is. I can use it standing up (I'm 6' tall) and it collapses enough that I can still use it while laying prone. I also like that the tripod comes with the quick attachment plate - it makes getting a spotting scope on/off very easy with minimal movement. I would buy this again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight and sleek This tripod is awesome and i love how lightweight and small it is makes a great backpacking tripod. Extends to the perfect height for me when using my spotting scope. I use it with my Razor HD 26-65x85 which is a little big for it when there is wind but the hook on the bottom helps to stabilize it. Typical Vortex = great quality

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Expected a Little More I was left feeling disappointed with the Summit SS-P tripod. For its weight, it's pretty sturdy when used from lower/seated positions. It extends to your desired height fairly quickly and easily and the pan head rotates 10x nocs smoothly. My problem was with the hardware loosening on hikes and the play in the baseplate adaptor. I know the hardware issue can be fixed with some Loctite, but this product simply did not hold up on a multi-day hunt. At different points of a week-long hunt, I lost the pan head handle, the bag hook and the female baseplate adaptor. All due to loosening while hiking in and out of my spots. Thankfully, I was able to find the handle and adaptor or I would have been left with a useless tripod. The baseplate and female adaptor should be one piece or it should be machined to fit much more snug. Moral of the story is, this'll be my truck tripod. If I were to do this over, I would spend the extra dollars and pick up one of the two higher-end tripod options by Vortex or I'd go with another brand, entirely.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too light for the job The free Vortex Summit tripod provided with the Diamondback spotting scope fulfills the adage that you get what you pay for! The tripod is much too spindly and shakey to be useful with the scope. Wobbled by light wind or the lightest touch, even at 20x the unsteady image is hard to see clearly and impossible at 60x. On a sturdy photography tripod with a gimble head mount, the scope performed excellently. Give the Summit tripod away to someone who will use it with a smartphone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fits in my pack perfectly I bought this Tripod to run my 15x’s on. I was worried that they may be to light to hold them sturdy. They had no problem and fit in my pack perfectly.
