Gitzo GT1532 overview

  • 1Description

The GT1532 Mountaineer Series 1 Carbon Fiber Tripod from Gitzo features Carbon eXact tubing, which includes High Modulus carbon fiber in the lower leg sections, adding to their diameters and making the tripod more rigid and stronger than its predecessor. The GT1532 has a load capacity of 22 lb, extends to a maximum height of 62.2", and folds down to 24.4" for transport.

The center column on the tripod can be removed for Ground Level Set, which enables the tripod to reach its lowest height of 6.7". Its three-section legs are secured with twist locks that incorporate G-lock Ultra, which has an internal O-ring to prevent dust and particles from entering the leg system. The top spider has been redesigned to add rigidity and large leg angle selectors give you more area to grip when readjusting leg angles. A ballast hook on the center column allows you to add weight to increase the tripod's stability.

    Gitzo GT1532 reviews

GT1532 Mountaineer Series 1 Carbon Fiber Tripod is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Heavy, solid, light enough to hike with I wanted a full-service tripod that is light enough to hike with. There are a lot of choices for a tripod of this class. In the end I went with this one because I trust the brand, it had the features I was looking for, and there was a significant rebate available. The tripod is very sturdy. I've had 20 lbs on (camera, lens, and backpack hanging from the hook) and it was rock solid. I particularly like that the center column can be dropped for ground shots; no need to carry a separate short column. Paired this with the Arca Swiss P0 and it's a very nice match. The P0 base is a few mm larger than the tripod base. The head looks a little oversized for this tripod, but not ridiculously so. Last thing: I CAN fit this in my carry-on legal luggage. I remove the head/center column, and remove the rubber feet from the tripod. It fits straight in the bag (not diagonal) with zero room to spare. I think that a 3-section tripod with traditional spider will be more stable, pound for pound, than a 4-section folding travel tripod. Speaking of weight: I took off one star because this tripod is almost a half pound heavier than the previous model it replaces. That's really significant, and a shame. I think Gitzo has lost the weight crown in its class. You do get some nice features for the extra weight, namely the ground level set function. And it is rated at 5 lbs higher load than the previous model, if that means anything. The other nit I have is the weight hook. The curve of the hook is not at all aggressive, which it makes me think twice about hanging anything valuable on it. The most convenient thing to hang is my camera bag, so that's kind of a bummer. The hook on the older model looks a lot more secure. I've used this tripod with a 70-200 f/4 lens in moderate winds atop a peak; no stability issues at all. I didn't even have a tripod collar on so the balance was iffy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As strong as the Series 2, but thinner and lighter. I'm surprised to find that this Series 1 tripod is as strong and vibration-stable as the same model in Series 2. Save some weight and a few bucks, folks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight and very stable I use this tripod with an RRS BH-30 for my OM-D EM1MkII and the 40-150mm lens and tele-extender. I also use this tripod with my spotting scope, by easily changing heads. I can extend and retract the legs easily and very quickly. Vibration-free, even under windy conditions, and a nice lightweight, stable tripod.
