Gitzo Mountaineer GT3542 Overview

The GT3542 Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod from Gitzo features Carbon eXact tubing, which includes High Modulus carbon fiber in the lower leg sections, adding to their diameters and making the tripod more rigid and stronger than its predecessor. The GT3542 has a load capacity of 55 lb, extends to a maximum height of 63.8", and folds down to 21.3" for transport.

The center column on the tripod can be removed for Ground Level Set, which enables the tripod to reach its lowest height of 5.9". Its four-section legs are secured with twist locks that incorporate G-lock Ultra, which has an internal O-ring to prevent dust and particles from entering the leg system. The top spider has been redesigned to add rigidity, and large leg angle selectors give you more area to grip when readjusting leg angles. A ballast hook on the center column allows you to add weight to increase the tripod's stability.

Is there an option for a replacement of the center column for this model? I could not find one in accessories. Thanks

Unfortunately B&H does not carry a replacement center column for this tripod. You would need to contact Gitzo/Manfrotto to order it. Their phone number is Tel: 201-818-9500.

question

What is the diameter of GT3542's power disc ? I know there is a lip (raise at the edge) on the new mountainner's power disc, I would like to know the inner diameter since I would like my ball head to fit firmly with the power disc.
Asked by: Andy S.
The edge of the disc is very slightly thicker than the main surface as you point out. However it isn't really an abrupt lip, but it slopes up the edge. The flat part of the disc is approximately 1 15/16 . My guess is Gitzo designed it that way to more securely lock down a ball head or gimbel head on the tripod using bit of a taper fit. I give them the benefit of knowing what they are doing, but you should make your own judgement call. My ball head and gimbel head seem to be very secure.

question

Hi, what is the diameter of GT3542's Power disc ? I know there is a lip on the power disc of the new mountaineer range, I would like to know the diameter within the lip since I want my ball head base fit firmly within the lip of the power disc.
Asked by: Anonymous
The outside diameter of the disc that the ball head mounts to is 68mm. The disc is flat and has a locking screw that puts tension on the bottom of the ballhead to prevent it from coming unscrewed. I have a Kirk BH-3 ballhead mounted on mine and its very secure. This is an excellent tripod and well worth the money, I'm very pleased with it.
