The FreeWave Captain Wireless TTL Flash Trigger and Remote TTL Shutter Release System for Nikon i-TTL SLRs from Vello is a multi-purpose 2.4 GHz, 4-channel digital i-TTL radio system that gives wireless freedom from a PC cord plus the convenience of accurate exposures through wireless communication with your camera's i-TTL flash technology. Imagine the near impossibility of running 300' lengths of PC cord to shoot outdoors, then imagine the wireless freedom of remote triggered, camera control with auto exposure in a radius up to 300'. Using 2 shoe mount i-TTL flashes and an assistant you'd have enough mobility to light groups, demos, shows, portraits and events on location, on-the-fly.

And the benefits aren't limited to flash photography either. You can also use the receiver with the included camera cord and handhold the transmitter to wirelessly trigger your camera in single shot, continuous shot, bulb, and timer modes. This is of paramount importance in situations where a subject, such as wildlife, may be difficult to approach. Additionally, the wireless function of the device reduces the potential of camera shake when doing macro, close-up, and long exposure photography. The Captain system can also be combined with the non-TTL FreeWave Fusion LR system, and additional FreeWave Fusion LR receivers can be integrated into the Captain system.

The Vello FreeWave Wireless TTL Captain's High Speed Sync and Second Curtain Sync functions create easy to control lighting effects and other creative options such as stop-action shooting and a wide degree of background or ambient light control.

  • Second Curtain Sync enables the user to create special effects and "after blur" images
  • Compatible Cameras

    Nikon: D5, D4S, D4, D3x, D3s, D3, D2Xs, D2X, D2Hs, D2H, D2, D1X, D1H, D1, D850, D810, D800, D800e, D700, D750, D610, D600, Df, D500, D300s, D300, D200 D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D90, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200 D5100, D5000, D3300, D3200, D3100, Z7, Z6

    TTL EV Control

The Vello FreeWave Captain's Wireless TTL Transmitter provides the user with the ability to manually adjust the TTL of an i-TTL capable flash in 1/3 stops between -3 to +3

    High Speed Sync (HSS) Control

Control the High Speed Sync (HSS) function from the device. This mode allows your camera to set the shutter speed faster than a flash would normally be able to fire in sync with. HSS mode instructs the flash to fire multiple short pulses of light to match the shutter's speed. Your camera/flash manual will indicate how you can access this mode

    Second Curtain Sync (SCS) Control

Second Curtain Sync (SCS) mode fires a flash at the end of an exposure rather than at the beginning to create the illusion of motion in an image. This yields natural-looking blur trails behind the moving subject such as those seen in night shots of speeding cars

    AF-Illumination

Control the AF illumination on the device itself, without having to go through your camera's menu

So far it does everything I wanted it to do. Objective was to get the flash off the camera in positions for better fill, and it has worked perfectly.

I've used it as a remote trigger system with my Nikon D800E and speed lite when set up off-camera, and as a shutter release. Set up is quick and easy. Seems to keep up with quick shooting. Very happy with my purchase.

    Just as advertised

I was pleasantly surprised when I received these things. Being kind of new to using off camera flash this way, I was relieved to find that this was really as close to a plug n' play set up as there is in photography. I'm using them on my Nikon D7100 and a Nikon SB-700 and they worked like a charm. The units fit snugly and securely on both the camera body and flash, and the receiver mounted on my stand firmly as well. Nothing felt cheap or flimsy. The response of the transmission to the flash was uninterrupted no matter what distance I was shooting from. For this price, I have no complaints!

It doesn't work with a Canon Speedlite 580EX II

I was disappointed when I tried to attach the receiver the my Canon Speedlite 580EX II. The flash will not lock onto the receiver and therefore, it doesn't connect to receive the signal to flash. I think there should be a note in the description or some indication there is a problem connecting with the Canon Speedlite 580EX II. It works fine with my smaller Speedlite 430EX, so I will keep it. I haven't tested it in the field yet.

    question

Will my Sekonic L-478DR trigger these units just like the pocketWizards?
    Asked by: FrankP
No, the Pocketwizards and the Vello wireless sync use different frequencies. And the meter only works with Pocketwizards if you want to use the meter to set off the flashes wirelessly.

    question

I owned this product for two years and Im planning on switching to Sony cameras. Is there a way to use some or all of the with Sony?
    Asked by: Ira S.
If you are purchasing a new Sony camera that uses the Multi-Interface hot shoe, the Vello FreeWave Captain Wireless TTL Triggering System for Canon E-TTL SLRs will fit into the camera's hot shoe. However, as the wireless triggers are designed for Canon E-TTL II automatic flash exposure, and not for Sony's TTL system, do note you will have to set the flash output manually; there will be no TLL automatic exposure when using this on a Sony camera.
