The Vello FreeWave Viewer VL Wireless Live View Remote Kit with AV/Shutter & Infrared Cables for Select Canon Cameras from B&H is a transmitter and 3.5" monitor kit that includes a FreeWave Viewer VL Data Cable designed for use with the Canon 6D, 7D, 5D Mk III, & 1D Mk IV for attaching the transmitter to the camera for proper operation. Also included is the infrared cable for starting and stopping video recording on these cameras (not supported with 1D Mk IV). This system allows for wireless viewing and remote shutter triggering of your compatible DSLR camera.

The Vello FreeWave Viewer VL Wireless Live View Remote consists of a 2.4GHz radio transmitter, and a monitor receiver with a 3.5" Live View TFT-LCD screen. Together, the transmitter and receiver provide a wireless viewing system that enables remote shutter control from a distance of up to 328'/100m.

The live view monitor features a 3.5" display with a 320 x 240 resolution that is able to provide a view of what your camera is seeing. A removable pop-up shade allows for improved viewing when shooting in direct sunlight or brightly lit situations. The monitor's design integrates a remote shutter release button that supports half-press control for pre-focusing. A dedicated button allows switching between AV (live view) and CCTV modes for different perspectives of monitoring, and a channel switch button permits changing between different transmitter channels. A 1/4"-20 tripod mount is located on the bottom of the unit for hands free viewing. Both the brightness and contrast of the display can be manually controlled.

The transmitter can be attached to the camera via its hot shoe, and connects to the camera using the included Y-cable. The AV connection provides the live view signal for remote viewing on the monitor, and the shutter release connection allows for wirelessly triggering the shutter from the monitor. A CCTV camera is integrated into the transmitter's design and incorporates a 45mm lens (35mm equivalent focal length) to provide another perspective for viewing subjects in front of the camera. The CCTV camera is especially useful to monitor when a moving subject is about to enter the frame for situations when you're using a telephoto or long lens to photograph. Additionally this camera's functionality is ideal for use when the connected camera does not support live view or if trying to conserve the camera's battery life for extended viewing sessions. The 2.4GHz radio transmitter has four selectable channels for greater control when more than one unit is being used within 328' proximity.

Vello FreeWave Viewer VL Reviews

Should of had this in Iceland

The only con I have are the instructions. Connecting the cables was not clear. It worked as it should with my Canon 5D Mark II. I was able to control the camera and take photos. This would have been very useful when I was in Iceland trying to take photos of the Northern lights in the cold. I have not tried it yet in sun light to see if you can see the screen.

My thoughts on this product are very good , ( Nikon users ) . If you have D3 series or D4 YES D4 it will work, as long as you have a 10 pin connector and a microphone input it will work. When I asked the help line they said (NO) it won't. It does.

Timited transmission

Unfortunately the product did not meet my expectations. The construction is all plastic but is well made and robust in itself sufficient to use. The battery is short-lived. The screen resolution is not good but it is not a problem. The set-up I found a little confusing and I have to do every time use. But the worst thing is the line of action to drive 100 meters is very good, but any obstruction of a pequano a bush branch, some leaves or pequana wall corner disrupts the transmission and does not allow operation. I test straight and unobstructed some at a distance of 50 meters and it worked perfectly. But in a forest even if it is low intensity, forget it. I believe you need an antenna with high gain to achieve this!

Excellent for Remote Photography

I am using a monopole on top of a tripod to get flowers in trees. They over 9 feet above the ground. This remote fills the requirements. What could be called 'advertising hype' ARE the best selling points about this remote.

not with my camera bodies

Certain models of Canon share similar electronic contacts with Pentax bodies, particularly the cable release, so I bought the appropriate Canon designated unit in hopes that the live-view connection would be compatible, but it is not. So the remote shutter release and built-in camera of the sending unit are usable, but no live view transmission. I also purchased the wire unit for a Nikon 7000, thinking it would work with my newer 7001 body, but Nikon changed the live view port, so again, shutter release and the built in video can be used, but no live view transmission. Discouraging, as remote live view is what I wanted. Both the Pentax & Nikon bodies now have mini-HDMI outputs, and I can only hope that Vello eventually makes a cord with this plug.

A very capable cost-effective live view remote solution

The Vello Freewave VL kit is a cost-effective means of providing wireless remote control with live-view capabilities for my Canon EOS 5D MkII/MkIII cameras. Several months of regular location and studio use have proven the 2.4 GHz single band, 100-meter maximum range, and 3.5-inch 240 x 320-pixel TFT LCD more than adequate for my needs, the Freewave performing flawlessly. The optional VCC-20 data cable is a must for the 5D MkII (the VCC-40 remote connector couples and works, but the A/V out connector isn't compatible). Hopefully Vello works out data cables for the 5D MkIV and 5DS R (I've kluged a clunky way to downscale and route HDMI output through a Marshall monitor with appropriate A/V out mini ports that works with the VCC-40 cable). A clearly written and adequately illustrated user guide leaves no intimidating learning curve to master, with relatively quick transition to real-world use. Physical set-up is straightforward; camera and viewer functions are controlled via easily navigated menus on board the viewer. Brightness/contrast controls and the built-in pop-out sunshade provide decent displays under strong ambient illumination, but inadequate for critical assessment of focus, DOF, camera leveling, etc. Field tests suggest line-of-sight operating distances averaging 110 meters, but practical work has so far been limited to about 30 meters outdoors, 8 meters or so indoors. No perceptible lag-time between triggering with Freewave controls and camera response; no issues with camera or viewer system lock-ups or interference in indoor or outdoor settings impacted by other wireless traffic. A Watson Compact Charger kit with three NP-60 batteries (reviewed elsewhere on the B & H site) purchased along with the Vello kit charges nearly exhausted batteries in 35 ? 40 minutes, as opposed to 2.5 hours for Vello equipment, which can't be used during charging. I highly recommend this very versatile accessory for the Vello kit.

Product works well; does what manufacturer said it does.

Its great for taking photographs of birds. Often, they are difficult to photograph because the don't tolerate movement and closeness of people. And it's a drag to sit uncomfortably and wait sometimes for hours for a bird to come into view. With this product you can be hundreds of feet away with your camera set up and aimed where a bird will likely perch without scaring it away. With the screen on the viewer you can see when a bird comes into view and how well the image is composed. You can do this from a distance in a comfortable chair. I have taken photos from behind a window in my house. The device has restrictions. I wish I could use a flash, but the receiver must be mounted on the camera's flash attachment place. Battery life seems too short, and once drained takes a long time to fully recharge. It's weakly made and delicate, though its materials and construction keep it light weight. On the whole a great product that works well.
