Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 Overview

The Sony E mount Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens is a prime standard wide-angle lens designed for both full-frame and APS-C sized sensors; when used with an APS-C sensor the 35mm-equivalent focal length is 52.5mm. It is well-suited to working in a variety of situations ranging from landscape to portraiture. Its fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is further beneficial to working in low-light conditions and for greater control over selective focus and shallow depth of field effects.

Two high refractive index elements and one aspherical element have been incorporated into the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations in order to produce sharper images. A UMC coating has also been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for improved light transmission and more contrast-rich imagery.

When used with APS-C-sized sensors, this 52.5mm equivalent standard prime lens provides a similar field of view to normal vision, making it well-suited to use in everyday situations.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and provides greater control over focus placement for shallow depth of field applications.
Two high refractive index elements and one aspherical element reduce chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and clarity.
UMC coating improves light transmission and suppresses lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich, color-neutral images.
Eight rounded aperture blades help to produce an aesthetic out-of-focus quality to benefit selective focus and shallow depth of field imagery.

question

Does it work on Sony a7ii?
Asked by: Anonymous
The 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens for Sony E Mount lens WILL work on the Sony a7ii, however, because it is a manual focus and exposure lens, autofocus and autoexposure will not work with the a7ii. Focus and exposure will be accomplished manually on the lens. To further answer your question, the lens will work with any Sony E mount full frame or crop sensor camera.

No, there is no recommended lens collar for the Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens for Sony E Mount (B&H# RO3514SEM). However, at just 1.62 lbs. (about 735 grams) it's not especially heavy.

question

Manual focus approach: I have been taking pictures since the early 70's using a View Camera, so I am not shy about manual focus. However I learned to go to the maximum aperture, focus, then stop down for the shot. This multi-step approach is too slow for street shooting with a small camera. Does focus peaking eliminate the need for max-aperture focusing - can I still achieve good and properly placed focus while focusing at f/8 ?
Asked by: Ronald
Yes, focus peeking allows you real-time feedback on the manual focusing distance without having to change the aperture. You will see what is currently in focus and what is not.
