  • 1Description

The gray HX-A500 Wearable 4K Camcorder from Panasonic is a water- and dustproof action camera that records 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) video at 30p. It features two parts, a lipstick tube camera unit with a 160° ultra-wide lens, and a recording unit with a 1.5" LCD screen. The camera system is designed so that you can attach the recording unit to a backpack or parachute strap, life vest, belt, or somewhere else readily accessible so you can monitor shots and control record start and stop. The camera unit weighs approximately an ounce, and can then be mounted on a headband, handlebars, or another perspective to best catch the action from. Optimized for adventure sports and recreational activities, the whole system is IP58 rated, meaning it is dustproof as well as water proof down to 10' for up to 30 minutes.

Not only can the HX-A500 shoot 4K, it does slow motion also. It can record 120 fps HD at 1280 x 720 resolution, and 240 fps at 848 x 480 widescreen SD resolution. Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity allows you to control the camera wirelessly from a smartphone or other mobile device, and live Web streaming is also possible using the USTREAM service.

Waterproof and Dustproof
The HX-A500 is waterproof, and can be used fully submerged for up to 30 minutes at a depth of no more than 10'. Plus dustproofing also allows you to actively use the camera at the beach, and other environments where dirt and sand may be present
Ultra HD 4K Recording Capability
With image quality four times better than Full HD resolution, you can shoot crisper movies that will be ready for the next generation of televisions and displays
Slow Motion Recording
At 720p HD the HX-A500 can record 120 fps slow motion; and for extreme slow-down, it can record 240 fps at 848 x 480 widescreen SD resolution. Slow motion is ideal for capturing action that is moving so fast the eye struggles to follow when viewing it in real-time; anything from a golf swing to a snowboard trick
Level Shot and Image Stabilizer
In addition image stabilization, compensating for handshake, the camera will also work to off-set tilted shots using the Level Shot function. The Level Shot Function is designed to help ensure your horizon stays level no matter how rough the ride gets
Built-In 1.5" LCD on Main Unit
Not only does the LCD let you check your movies on location, it also allows you to view the menu system to change various camera settings. Operations are performed using Joystick navigation beneath the LCD, with visual feedback provided by the LCD itself
One Ounce Wearable Camera Unit
The HX-A500 wearable camera is designed so that you can capture whatever is in your line of sight, and features a 160° ultra-wide lens. Wearing the lightweight lens unit on the Head Mount allows you to record scenes that put viewers right there in the midst of the action

    Panasonic HX-A500 reviews

HX-A500 Wearable 4K POV Camcorder (Gray) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good little camera, great 4K picture. I bought this mostly so I could record my DIY projects but I also managed to use it for a shoot where I needed a child's POV. The camera turned out to be great when you're not actually wearing it yourself, because you can monitor the footage in real time over wifi with your mobile device, so you know if you got the shot or not. The app and wifi are a bit awkward to use (usability isn't great and i had to have my iPhone forget my home wifi network so it would connect to the camera's) but overall everything works as advertised. I am concerned about the battery life and the fact that you can't quickly swap out the battery for a fresh one; when your battery dies, you're looking at a couple of hours to charge it up again, during which you can't use the camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice little 4k camera 30 fps @ 4k.. nice. Once connected via WiFi, the Panasonic Image app controls the camera very nicely. It may bog down at times on your phone, but the image recorded is fine. Doesn't have a camera lens cover for storage. Will need to find something that will work. Looks like the NiteCore 25.4 diffuser cap should work in a pinch. With Wifi streaming - the unit ran for 1 hour 20 minutes until it filled up 32gb card streaming - and the battery was dead at that point. Better than expected sound indoors. Also found a generic velcro mount from my VIO POV that strapped up nicely and securely. The camera heads look the same size - so the cap from the VIO POV might work on here (can not find to verify). The slow motion option is also cool.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice for Pole Cam I use this product as a pole cam so I can frame the shot underwater in a fishing show we are filming. Also have used on other shoots as pole cam with nice results. One thing that is missing is a nice lens cover. I am use to my Contour that has a nice snap on lens cover. I bag this each time which is a pain. Come on Panasonic add a nice snap on lens cap. Also the cable length is too short. I think there should be a option to add another meter or two. Mounts for the lens are junk. They flex and what you get with the camera is not even worth using. The head strap is a after thought. So for me I built a mount on my mono pod or carbon tube depending on use. And I give it 3 stars for the very nice picture and pixel and frame rate options.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from One and only - at lease for now I have to say I am not the average person who bought this camera to shoot themselves in action. I am a video producer, shooting documentaries, music video and trainning videos. I buy this camera to add a POV (point of view) shot to my work, and the footage is more like a B-roll than the principal footage in the output.I pick this camera as currently this is the only camera that shoot 4K at 30p and has a separate camera and recorder design. This is important as I foresee the need to put the camera at challenging locations and the smaller size will definitely helps. I also like the availability of different mounting accessories that are reasonably priced and does not break your bank.Well, a lot of attention is going to be about the 4K. Let's be real - you cannot expect professional quality 4K from a inexpensive POV, but the extra resolution does give us extra room to crop and edit into HD, which come in handy as the subject wearing it is not going to be composition consious like a cameraman. I just received the unit, and have not find a chance to put it through a real shooting session. However, from initial tests I feel it is going to do what I want it to do without any problems. Video quality is not going to be like the big boys, but this is a POV.As all review in the web mentioned, the audio is far from professional quality. However, in my application we have separate audio recorder on location, the audio is going to serve a a refernce to sync footage in post production, so again this limitation is not going to bother me or anyone who see the same application of this camera. After I put it in real use, I shall post the video on my site.-----------. Add me on Twitter to ensure you are notified when I post the footage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unique angles.... Check I'm motorsports and use this to capture different angles others don't even think to get. FYI: Standard View on the HX-A500 is exactly the same as Medium view on a GoPro.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great coaching tool! This is my fifth camera for shooting underwater video, and I finally have the tool that I want! Unlike the GoPro, having the camera lens separate from the base unit, and having the viewfinder on the base unit allows me to watch the screen above the water while I follow my swimmers underwater...and I can keep my head dry and wear my glasses! The screen shuts off every 30 seconds (which is annoying), and the cable could be longer, but a quick tap of the joystick reactivates the viewfinder, so it's OK. The video quality and slo-mo features are great. And I love the wi-fi app that lets me review the videos immediately on my Android tablet. (The real-time remote control works fine, but I don't use that because I'm in the water for shooting.) It took a bit to get used to holding it level--there's a bump on the lens module to help you orient it, but the cylindrical shape makes it hard to identify up visually. Not a big problem, though. I am very happy with my A500!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from dead I bought the VOI POV system which will accept a little punishment. The wired camera sustained a lite drop from about 1 foot. the plastic case shattered and nothing would work afterwards. Of course because it sustained physical type damage, NO ONE would cover it.. Was however able to recover the images and videos from the SD card...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressed! This is a very impressive piece of technology and a reasonable price. The commentator who suggested the Nitecore 25.4mm filters as a protective cap was spot on. They even make a little click when you put them on.
