Sigma 50mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

The Sony A mount Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens is a fast standard-length prime designed to achieve high optical performance through the incorporation of both three Special Low Dispersion glass elements and one molded glass aspherical element. These elements, coupled with an advanced optical design, work to minimize sagittal coma flare and chromatic aberrations in order to provide high image sharpness and clarity. The lens' large diameter and floating system also help to correct for vignetting to ensure maintained peripheral brightness. A Super Multi Coating has been applied to lens elements, too, to reduce flare and ghosting for higher contrast and color fidelity.

A Hyper Sonic AF Motor, along with an optimized AF algorithm, produces quiet, smooth, and fast autofocus performance that benefits this lens' use in a wide variety of situations. This AF motor also permits full-time manual focusing control for refined precision by simply turning the focus ring at any time.

Sigma Global Vision - Art
As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens' is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Molded Glass Aspherical Element
This lens has been designed using an advanced optical structure to achieve both high resolution and sharpness along with an aesthetic out-of-focus quality for greater subject separation. A molded glass aspherical element corrects for sagittal coma flare and enables full use of the fast f/1.4 maximum aperture with maintained sharpness and clarity. This design also works to minimize vignetting, color blur, and other distortions help to produce natural and pleasing bokeh for selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques. By reducing these aberrations, this lens is also well-suited to astrophotography or other situations with point-light sources due to its ability to suppress blur near the edges of the frame.
Special Low Dispersion Glass Elements
Three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements have been incorporated within the lens design to correct for axial chromatic aberration throughout the entire focusing range. This helps to ensure maintained image sharpness, clarity, and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting.
Large Diameter Lens
In designing the lens with a large 85.4mm diameter, and placing the widest elements within the front group, greater peripheral brightness is more easily attained when working with larger apertures. This design also lends itself to minimizing vignetting throughout the aperture range for greater clarity and detail across the image frame.
Super Multi-Layer Coating
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Floating System
By employing a floating system, the distance between glass elements is adjusted during focusing in order to limit the amount of lens movement required when shooting. This floating system helps to realize a minimum focusing distance of 1.3' with a maximum magnification of 1:5.6. Additionally, this design also contributes to high detail rendering capabilities throughout the entire focusing range.
Hyper Sonic AF Motor
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Other Lens Features
  • A rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.
  • The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. The outside of the lens barrel is also engraved with the year of production.
  • The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.
  • The included lens hood is fitted with a rubber connection for a secure fit.
  • This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

    Sigma 50mm f/1.4 reviews

50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Sony A is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Met my expectations and more!! I'm a wedding photographer, so fast primes are a must for me, especially during indoor ceremonies/receptions, and the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens for Sony did not disappoint! Physically, the lens has a clean, simple, and beautiful build. It's solid and has some weight to it, but right away, you know Sigma means business, especially when it comes to its ART series of lenses. The only drawback for the build of this lens is that it's not weather-sealed. Performance-wise, I could not be any more happier! At f/1.4 on my Sony a99, the images are tack-sharp! Focus is fast and silent, and didn't have any issues with auto-focusing in low-light. Focus accuracy is also pretty consistent. Bokeh is nice and smooth, and contrast is excellent. To me, this lens is definitely comparable to the Sony 50mm f/1.4 Carl Zeiss lens in terms of quality, but the biggest different is PRICE. At about a $500 difference, the 50mm ART lens by Sigma is a no-brainer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing picture quality on A99ii I just got back from a trip where I used this lens almost exclusively paired with A99ii. The image quality (sharpness) will blow you away coupled with the 42MP sensor on the A99ii. This is the sharpest lens I have ever used so far. I know there are sharper lenses out there still, but this is way more than adequate. The second thing I want to talk about is the autofocus. Some people have AF issue with this lens. I have also experienced issue with inaccurate AF, especially wide open. If you stop down to F2.0 or F2.8, the AF accuracy gets better. However, with A99ii, I have no problem whatsoever shooting wide open. The reason is with A99ii, you can manually adjust focus after AF confirmation and I get sharp pictures 99% of the time. The EVF on A99ii is so amazingly sharp and smooth that the focus magnifier shows you CRYSTAL CLEAR when your subject is in focus. For portrait work, if you have A99ii, this lens is one of the best lenses for it no doubt.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Excellent lens if it focuses accurately I was excited to get this lens having seen some images from a friend who owns a Nikon D810. It is a beautiful lens aesthetically! That said, I was extremely disappointed in the focusing accuracy with this lens on my Alpha 99. Perhaps as many as 90% of my shots were OUT of focus. I have since returned this lens and replaced it with the Sony Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 ZA which takes advantage of the Autofocus AF-D and now 90% ++ of my shots are spot on!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing lens, lives up to the hype I primarily use the lens on a Sony A77ii, but we were surprised how well it also worked on my wife's a6000, with the lens converter on it. Stellar pics, handheld, low light, nothing could phase it. Only downside is the weight, but I will lug that thing around forever, given it's output.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great lens bought this for my Sony A77m2, quiet, fast, accurate auto focus, manual focus ring moves smoothly, a little on the hefty size, nice lens hood included, I like that it can be kept accurate via the Sigma USB Dock

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best lens as lot of review says I bought this lens for portrait. I was researching and comparing this lens with Sal50f14z for more than three month. And, I was waiting the launching date of this lens since April 2014. It makes the best quality of pictures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best 50mm prime lens ever! Great lens to use for portraits. The lens is very sharp and gives a very creamy bokeh. Contrary to what the haters say, this Sigma 50mm lens is one of the best if not the best your money can buy without breaking your bank. This lens is fast focusing and silent and gives the best colors.
