The Pentax smc FA 645 33-55mm f/4.5 AL Lens is a wide-angle zoom lens designed for use with medium format Pentax 645 mount cameras. It features an aperture range of f/4.5-32 and has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 26-43.5mm, providing a very useful range of wide-angle lengths. This lens in particular utilizes two aspherical elements that greatly reduce distortion, field curvature, and coma aberrations common with wide angle lenses.

The 33-55mm features a lens construction of 11 elements in 8 groups, including some high refraction low-dispersion glass. To maintain image quality, it uses a 3-group floating zoom to reduce field curvature throughout the range. Also, the 33-55mm has a minimum focus distance of 15.7".

For smooth out-of-focus areas, the lens has an eight blade aperture diaphragm. Additionally, it features an 82mm front filter thread.

smc FA 645 33-55mm f/4.5 AL Lens is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Underdog After reading the disappointing specs on the 5D mark IV I decided to move into a new Pentax 645Z. So I've been on the hunt for a new kit of lenses. Having an easy to use wide zoom lens is a must so when I saw how much the latest offering from Pentax is I was a bit miffed as I knew I'd never take that plunge; the newest option is just cost prohibitive for my uses and I can not monetize it in my business. During my adventure researching lenses for the 645Z I found this lens, while generally not highly thought of in online forums and originally designed for the film 645N, it's available used from a number of vendors. I paid 40% of retail for a very good used example and put it to the test with some street photography in the city I live in and love - San Antonio Texas. I'm very pleased with it for medium sized architectural subjects in terms of the edge to edge sharpness and it's very bright. I made a 12x17 print of the Alamo (See the attached post processed examples) and am very pleased with the edge to edge sharpness. The vignette was unnoticeable in fact (at least it was to me). In editing I actually added some vignette to the images. There is a noticeable amount of wide angle distortion but I'm pleased with it - it gives that wide angle feel but is still very useable. Perhaps its more related to shooting with medium format but it seems even wider than the 0.79x crop factor would suggest and I would probably be reaching the zoom limits if I were to use this say for hand held work at an event or a party - I'd keep the 75mm f/2.8 handy for that - so for now I'm going to save it for landscapes, hikes, and city walking. Pros: Affordable autofocus wide angle zoom for the 645 mount Edge to edge sharpness wide open and zoomed out Bright Cons: Wide angle distortion is on the limit of acceptable limited 2x zoom ratio Zoomed all the way in there is still noticeable wide angle distortion Conclusion: For me this lens on the used market or even as new, if you've got the $$, represents a tremendous value over the newest series offered by Pentax. So if you're not sure how the monetization of this purchase will work out for your business this is a good choice to get basic functionality. The bottom line is I'm keeping it and don't regret the purchase one bit.
