Lytro Illum Light Field Digital Camera
Key Features
  • 40 Megaray Light Field CMOS Sensor
  • Light Field Engine 2.0 & Snapdragon 801
  • 8x Zoom Lens; 30-250mm Equivalency
  • Constant Aperture of f/2.0
The Illum Light Field Digital Camera from Lytro is their second-generation light field camera and offers not only an upgraded 40 megaray sensor but a traditionally-styled camera body and lens barrel with touchscreen LCD control, large grip and hot shoe mount. The Illum is a point-and-shoot camera that utilizes the unique Light Field sensor and the Light Field Engine 2.0 for image capture and processing. With a micro-lens array on the sensor it records the color, intensity and direction of light traveling in every direction throughout a scene and creates "living pictures" in which the focus point can be determined after you have shot the image. In addition to adjusting focus points and depth of field on an image, you can change the point of perspective slightly to the left, right, up or down.

question

What's the point of this camera? I'm not sure what makes it special.
Asked by: Anonymous
The primary reason the camera failed is because people don't understand its use. This is not a regular camera, take your phone and it will be better. This camera records images capable of changing to 3D or focus animation and so on. Other than that it is a proof-of-concept of what will be possible (starting with Sony, find the interview with the camera boss where he states that computational photography will be the next iteration of innovation)... Don't buy this when you want a good camera, everything will be better than this. Buy it if youre interested in exploring new grounds..

question

would this camera be good for photographing jewelry and getting good focus across depth of field of the whole piece for example the front and back of a ring all in focus?
Asked by: Catherine C.
The Illum may be suitable for your requirement but I wouldn't buy it just for that requirement. It has a lovely 30-250mm (8x zoom)constant f/2.0 lens that can be only be shut down to smaller apertures to f/16 for good depth of field using the supplied software. Pretty much defeating the Illum's purpose. I do not have worthwhile experience doing this. Instead, I would suggest an ILC/CSC like the Olympus OMD/PEN range with a good macro lens.
