Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

The Canon EF mount Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens is a prime standard wide-angle lens designed for both full-frame and APS-C sized sensors; when used with an APS-C sensor the 35mm-equivalent focal length is 56mm. It is well-suited to working in a variety of situations ranging from landscape to portraiture. Its fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is further beneficial to working in low-light conditions and for greater control over selective focus and shallow depth of field effects.

Two high refractive index elements and one aspherical element have been incorporated into the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations in order to produce sharper images. A UMC coating has also been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for improved light transmission and more contrast-rich imagery.

This lens also incorporates an AE microprocessor that enables the camera to electronically confirm focus as well as permit camera-based control over exposure settings.

When used with full-frame image sensors, this lens' wide-angle perspective is well-suited to use in a broad array of conditions. When used with APS-C-sized sensors, this 56mm equivalent standard prime lens provides a similar field of view to normal vision.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and provides greater control over focus placement for shallow depth of field applications.
Two high refractive index elements and one aspherical element reduce chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and clarity.
UMC coating improves light transmission and suppresses lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich, color-neutral images.
An AE microprocessor is incorporated within this lens' design, which enables camera-based control over exposure settings and also permits in-camera manual focus confirmation.

    Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 reviews

35mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens for Canon EF (AE Chip) is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lost the Rokinon Lotto DISCLAIMER: I don't want to dissuade people from purchasing this lens at all, just be sure to thoroughly test your copy within the return window. Will update when I test another copy of this lens, but so far my copy is unusably soft until f/2.8. I read many review that claim this lens has the potential to be exceptionally sharp even wide open. Fingers crossed that my next copy isn't so disappointing. My sigma 50mm f/1.4 destroys this lens in terms of sharpness at f/1.4. Also, my Tamron 28-75 is sharper than the Rokinon when comparing the two stopped down to f/2.8.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easily better than L glass I had been using a Canon 24-105mm f/4L for my landscape and astrophotography and need to upgrade to a faster lens. After looking at many data charts this lens easily beats out the Canon 35mm 2.8 lens at f/2.8 and you save $100 dollars. I would easily take that over that none L glass. But what about the 35mm L glass from Canon? I've found that I would not be able to get any better results with the $1,800 Canon 35mm L glass. Yes you dont have autofocus but the infinite focus capability really does not make that a factor for what this lens is really designed for. I would highly suggest skipping out on the Canon 35mm and going with Rokinon. The glass is as sharp as you get. Even fully open the results are great. You might get a little vignetting in the corners but layering your photos on Adobe CC will make that a non factor. My advice, spend the extra $50 for the AE chip and save yourself the trouble of having to manually handle the aperture by hand. It also helps with you knowing when you are in focus as well, which is very handy for a manual focus lens. Overall, it's best to save the $1000+ you could spend to get the Canon 35mm L glass and get the Rokinon 35mm with the AE chip. You will not be sacrificing anything noticeable in your photos.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Canon AE chip Not Working Correctly I have two Rokinon lenses with AE chip (14mm f2.8 and 85mm f1.2) that work perfectly on my three Canon bodies (1Dx, 5DSR, 5D MKIII). After getting two different 35 mm f1.4 Canon AE chip lenses from BHPhoto, both lenses did not perform correctly. Both lenses consistently underexposed by about 2 f stops or more. Since the 35 mm 1.4 with Canon AE chip is a relatively new offering by Rokinon I hope that Rokinon can correct the problem because I otherwise liked the lens. However, if you are paying to get the AE chip instead of the Canon EF mount 35 mm 1.4 why keep something that does not perform correctly? Getting two different faulty lenses from BH leads me to advise others to stay away from this lens until the problem(s) are fixed. If you want this focal length, pay less money and get the 35mm f1.4 Canon EF mount lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Everything Lens This lens has not left my camera since I bought it. I absolutely love it. At first I thought have a manual lens would be too daunting, but with the AE Chip, it's a piece of cake. This lens is perfect for anything; portraits, landscape, low light, you name it. Love, love, love it.

I'm in pure love by it, see your sharpness and your bokeh make me regret of don't have bought the full kit. You could see the incredible result of this lenses in the

Rated 5 out of 5 by from To use is to believe With picking function on EOS M3, all is good. After this, I bought another Rokinon with AE chip for 85mm. Wish 24mm with AE chip but already have MF 24mm Samyang. Bag is getting heavier for muti. Rokinon lens but happy to stop using zoom lens.
