Dana Dolly DDOK1 Overview

The Dana Dolly Portable Dolly System Rental Kit with original style track ends is a heavy-duty camera dolly platform that rides on 16 custom-modified soft polyurethane wheels that resist flat spotting and use ABEC-7-rated precision bearings providing you with extremely smooth dolly shots. This kit is complete with 75, 100, and 150mm bowl adapters, and comes in a custom flight case. The wheel trucks swivel, allowing the dolly to ride on available straight or curved tracks, which you must source separately. The manufacturer recommends using standard-speed rail or Schedule 80 aluminum pipe of compatible size. The dolly includes two original style track ends, which accept inch and a quarter pipe (standard speed rail), and fit into available standard junior stand receivers. A center support is included for long track runs or when using heavy cameras.

The dolly platform is machined from aluminum and features a standard Mitchell mount including a 2.75" center hole with a machined key way. The platform incorporates one 3/8" through hole, one 1/4"-20 threaded hole, and one 3/8"-16 threaded hole on each side of the dolly platform for a total of 6 accessory mounting holes. The rental kit includes a monitor mount with a ball head adapter. The Dana dolly is designed and manufactured in the USA.

Custom Machined Track Wheels
The key to the Dana dolly's smooth ride is the 16 custom machined track wheels.
  • The wheels are custom-made soft, then turned down to be round within 1/1000 of an inch to eliminate the "bounce" that normal skateboard wheels suffer from.
  • You can park the dolly with 100 pounds of camera and accessories on the track at 100° F for an hour without the wheels flat spotting.
  • Another benefit from the machining the wheels is reduced squeak during use.
  • The wheels are custom modified 16 at a time on a special machine, providing uniformity.
Wheel Trucks
  • The wheel trucks can swivel on the dolly, which allows it to ride on straight and round track.
  • A felt washer separates the dolly platform from the wheel trucks, helping to reduce noise.
  • The included T-Tool features 1/2, 9/16, and 3/8" ends.
  • It allows you to tighten the wheel trucks using the 9/16th end to suit your taste.
Mitchell Mount
The Mitchell mount features an elongated key way, allowing you to use nonstandard adapters.
Track Supports
Track supports fit into available standard junior stand receivers.

question

Will a manfrotto 501 fluid head fit on here?
Asked by: sophano v.
The Manfrotto 501HDV head has a 3/8 -16 thread. This system uses 75mm, 100mm and 150mm Ball Base Heads. You could however use a 501HDV on it, you'd just need 75mm ball adapter like B&H # MA520BSH.https://bhpho.to/2xdormd

Do I need a special tie-down to use with the Sachtler ACE XL 75mm fluid head?
Asked by: Jenelle
No, while on a elevated track simply connect the 75mm bowl adapter to the Dana Dolly Portable Dolly System. Then remove the tie down from the bottom of the fluid head base and gently insert the base into the bowl adapter and tie it down. For best results on the ground use a short tiedown.

how well would 6ft-10ft of PVC Schedule 40 Pipes hold up?
Asked by: danny
That depends on how much weight you are putting on the Pipes and how you intend to use them. If you plan to lay your dolly track on the floor for instance 6-10 feet probably isn't going to be a problem, however, if you plan to elevate the dolly then 6-10 feet will become very problematic. PVC Pipes are known to flex and break therefore you'd have to be extremely cautious about how and where you apply your supports. In addition to that, the heavier the payload the more cautious you have to be about how and where the supports are located. It is safest to use metal tracks if available at that distance.

question

Has anybody found a way to use a 100mm bowl adapter on a tripod instead of stands with the original track ends?
Asked by: Anonymous
We see what you are trying to do. No manufacturer, however, has made such adapters. You can DIY and take 3/9 threaded rod, two pieces of bar stock, drill straight holes, bolt the rod and bars to the 100mm bowl. Then add this Manfrotto 186 Female Threaded 3/8 to Male 5/8 Stud Adapter - 50mm Long B&H # MA186. That is the type of solution I have seen a good grip come up with a million times. However, this is something done on set when you have to get the shot. It is not something B&H can be responsible for. Therefore, in the interests of your long time welfare, we highly recommend spending the money and getting the proper stands. You will see this is much better for you since you will be able to go instantly between your Dana Dolly and your tripod. You will save your back and a lot of time on set. And time is something you never have enough of on set.

question

If I get pipe at the local hardware store am I looking for steel? Galvanized? Does it matter?
Asked by: Jim G.
While Dana Dolly always recommends schedule 80 aluminum, you can sometimes find schedule 40, and it really depends on the length of the track and the weight of the camera. I have used EMT pipe with a RED Dragon on an O'Connor 50 head with good results as long as we kept the length down to about 6'. Longer and heavier will translate to sagging. Some big box places like Home Depot sell galvanized, which is much heavier and would probably work up to 10'
