Vello RM-CEF overview

  • 1Description

The Macrofier Reverse Mount Adapter and Extension Tube for Canon EF/EF-S Lenses from Vello allows you to reverse mount any Canon EF or EF-S lens to your Canon DSLR camera, facilitating extremely close-focus macro and micro photography. An economical alternative to purchasing macro lenses, this all-metal item can also function as a standard auto extension tube, with the ability to add an unlimited number of tube extensions.

The Macrofier's integrated circuitry cable enables your lens to communicate with your camera, even with the mounting reversed, allowing for automatic control of the aperture and focus. When used as a reverse mounted lens, the camera will focus using contrast-detect AF and live view, or manual focusing. Alternatively, when mounted as simply an extension tube, both phase detection AF and contrast-detect AF with the camera's live view are supported along with manual focus.

With the dual use functions and integrated electronics, the Macrofier is an effective accessory for those interested in an economical option for close-up, macro photography.

Reverse Mounting
Achieve extreme macro magnification with auto focus and exposure by utilizing the Macrofier to mount your EF/EF-S lens backwards on your Canon DSLR camera body.
Extension Tube
By increasing the space between the lens and your camera's sensor, you can achieve a closer macro magnification than your standard lens would normally offer. When used as an extension tube, the Macrofier maintains the auto focus and exposure modes of your camera.
Compatible With Additional Extension Tubes
Additional extension tubes, such as the Vello EXT-CEM, can be screwed onto the Macrofier for even closer focusing and macro magnification.
Includes 7 adapter rings for reverse mounting compatibility with most lenses

    Vello RM-CEF reviews

Macrofier Reverse Mount Adapter and Extension Tube for Canon EF/EF-S Lenses is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from possible damage to camera? I left the earlier review with the same name but promised an update. Canon Service said a 3rd party device could have caused the damage by excessive hunting. Vello immediately contacted me after reading my post and requested I send them the Reverse Mount Adapter for investigation. After a couple of weeks they sent a new one. They tried to assure me that it would not damage my camera but I am going to use it only in manual focus mode. That will work and I think it is worth the money using only in manual mode. I had to pay $ to get camera fixed (Vello did not reimburse) and I do not want to risk that expense again). I upped my star rating to 4 for their effort and it does work well in manual mode.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reverse Macro GAMECHANGER I'm in love with the Vello Macrofier! I'm a macro insect and spider photographer and I've been shooting with the reverse lens technique for many years. I've used an old manual 28mm lens so I could retain aperture control until I discovered this handy tool. The Vello Macrofier allows my camera to communicate with my lens so I have total control of my aperture via my camera. I shoot with my 24mm and 40mm pancake lenses. I can achieve a 1.2:1 magnification ratio with my 40mm lens and a 2.6:1 magnification ratio with my 24mm lens. This setup is relatively inexpensive and yields impressive results. I'll let the photos speak for themselves. You can see loads more examples on my facebook page:

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just what the Doctor ordered The fact that this little goodie allows you to reverse mount a lens and keep all auto functions is wonderful, and reason on its own to buy it. Add in the fact that it can be used with cheap manual extension tubes to achieve full auto control as well. In fact it works so well that I now have to deal with diffraction distortion when I go beyond 5x magnification when using my 17-85mm lens reversed. Works best when subject illuminated by flash.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great idea, but could be lighter Many years ago I used to hold an inverted 50mm just in front of my camera to get supermacro effect. Then I saw an adapter (mechanical) and dreamed a day that someone would make one capable to use the eletronic of new cameras and lenses. Vello did it! I saw this macrofier a little bit heavier then the ideal, and the ring between the camera and the lens should be shorter making it easier to get the right focusing point. Its very difficult to get a sharp focus using the camera ON HANDS. In other side, using the camera in a focus rail gave me really great images.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from possible damage to camera? I love this but I am going to leave it in manual focus from now on since I suspect it caused my Canon 5D Mark III (and 50mm lens) to begin giving Err 30 errors. It really hunts hard when focusing so I suspect it is the source of the problem and the error began when using this. I'll update you when I get camera back from shop in about two weeks. I'll continue to use but only with manual focus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as expected, but know what you're getting... This product worked up to my expectation it allowed me to achieve extreme magnification on my existing EF lens (reads: The Canon lenses that I use with my Canon 6D that have no aperture ring, only electronic controls) With the Vello macrofier, you can reverse mount your lens, and have aperture control on the reversed lens. This works as expected, I have aperture control and autofocus (which is useless because the camera can't hunt for focus because the depth of field is very shallow). The adapter is solidly built, and comes with adapters for many lens filter sizes (which is better than other brands out there). However, removing the reverse adapter is hard, so hard that I got a filter wrench to remove the 77mm adapter from my 17-40L. The 58mm adapter on my Canon 50mm f/1.4 could be easily removed without a wrench because it protrudes and I could easily twist it out. They could have designed the reverse adapter with a little protrusion to easily twist it off. I could also combine this with extension tubes. I used the kinko set (36+20+12mm) stacked to focus on a dead bug. You will run into two challenges. You focus this manually by moving the camera forward and backward. This is not going to be easy because the focus distance is very small. This will be an issue if you're trying to shoot insect, and if they're moving, it's NOT going to be a daunting task. You can try focusing in live view, but you will need to set the ISO high so that the picture will appear bright in your LCD. Second challenge is lighting. You may want to have an LED/Flash light to point at your subject as you try to look for it in the view finder. You would also want to shoot at a small aperture (f/11 and smaller) to get pictures in good focus unless you're thinking about doing focus stacking in post processing. and because you're shooting at a small aperture and have an additional tube space, you cut some light coming to your lens, so a flash is highly recommended. I personally use a standard off-camera Yongnuo flash with wireless trigger. You will have to do some trial an error, but I believe (and correct me if I am wrong) that because you focus so close (like 1 or 2 inches away) that some light ends up being reflected on to the camera creating a hotspot. I don't always get that, but it's something that you should worry about. I am not sure it's a problem with the adapter. Cons ---- I wish Vello designed this in a way where a ring or LED flash could be attached to the front element, maybe if they had some threads for a filter to protect my precious lens's rear element. I contacted Vello and they told me they don't have a flash that attaches to it. Shame!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from it can be better Good concept and it can be better: PROs: Both the auto focus and aperture setting functioning fine. CON: The auto focus works but at very close distance (as it is designed for the reverse shots)is not easy. So I am using it for setting the shutter and aperture and will continue use the manual focus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great. Bought this so I could use all the features of my STM lenses since those lenses can't focus or change aperture at all without power(I didnt want to expose my camera's sensor while it was powered on, as with the other method for setting aperture.) Works perfectly for me. In addition, I purchased a 58mm/male to 60mm/female step up ring. The 60mm screws on to the adapter, and I can use a filter(backwards to how it normal screws on) I did this to protect the backside of my lens.
