Redrock Micro 8-144-0001 overview

  • 1Description

The retroFlex Rig Bundle for Blackmagic Pocket Camera from Redrock Micro is a modular cage support system designed to mimic a retro shooting style reminiscent of older 16mm Bolex or Super8 cameras. The rig consists of a pistol grip with start/stop trigger button, a 3x optical viewfinder, and a protective cage - all designed specifically for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. The compact size makes the rig suitable for a wide range of run-and-gun applications, location scouting, or even using the Pocket Cinema Camera as a director's viewfinder on set.

At the heart of the rig is the retroFlex Cage, which provides added protection, stability, and accessory mounting threads for your Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, while leaving access open to all camera functions. The camera attaches to the cage via a top and bottom 1/4"-20 threaded screw and rests flush against the backplate to assure the camera remains straight in the cage. The cage adds nine additional accessory mounting points, consisting of six 1/4"-20 threads, two 3/8"-16 threads, and a cold shoe mount.

The open-face design of the cage keeps the camera's grip accessible to allow for easy and secure handling. It also leaves the area around the lens mount open, so it won't interfere with any lens mount adapters. The optional wireLock accessory can be added to provide a locking mechanism for each of the five cable connectors on the Pocket Cinema Camera. This is especially useful when using an external HDMI monitor or recorder.

The retroFlex cage also provides points of attachment for the 3x optical viewfinder and pistol grip. The optical viewfinder is attached to the retroFlex Cage for Blackmagic Pocket Camera via rare-earth magnets and an integrated mounting frame that prevents light leakage. It has an integrated adjustable diopter for eyesight correction. The pistol grip support allows for the camera to be triggered at a moment's notice without needing to readjust your grip.

retroFlex Rig Bundle for Blackmagic Pocket Camera is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Insane quality, and worth every penny! At first, I wondered how much I'd use the pistol grip, or even the viewfinder. Although I know having a good viewfinder is useful, I didn't know how much I'd actually use it. But I must say, It's an incredible group of products, and EVERYTHING is heavy duty, metal, and sturdy. And, as I shoot a lot of outdoor, or quick shot to shot stuff, I use a smaller tripod that actually gives just enough room to keep the pistol grip on. Allowing me to go handheld very quickly. With the viewfinder, and pistol grip on at the same time, it's heavy enough that the footage comes out very smooth. I use every part of this kit at almost every shoot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can finally use the BMPCC in the outdoor Bought a BMPCC as a second camera for my remote canoeing films. First trip and didnt use it, cause its impossible to see anything on the screen under the sun. Retroflex gave a new life to the camera. In true, its a pleasure to use it. The cage is ultra strong, what also protects the camera in the trip conditions. The viewfinder is a bit bigger than I expected, but the image you get is amazing. Pistol grip is also very strong, but a bit heavy for my use. The cage is enough to add a better grip of the camera, although I use it mounted on a tripod 90% of the time. I can say that the BMPCC is a much better camera with a Retroflex.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The New with an old school feel. I am a professional cinematographer, I work with the ARRI Alexa on the majority of jobs. I use the Blackmagic pocketcam a lot as an additional camera. In particular on lifestyle type commercials. The retroflex is wonderful for this work. It feels like working with a super 8 camera and the pistol grip set-up really helps embrace that style. I love using it. I can either effect it in post to get a super 8 look or keep it clean and it cuts seamlessly with the ARRI footage when I capture in the RAW mode. Another great feature is the magnifying eyepiece, it is easily attached and removed as it attaches magnetically. It's definitely a wonderful piece of equipment I love to use and try and use as much as possible. I have really no negatives on this piece of gear. I love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Totally refines the way you shoot with the BMPCC Bought this around 2016, and since then the connector cable to trigger recording from the pistol grip has failed (I haven't bothered to try getting a new one) but besides that I really love the case, the viewfinder and of course the pistol grip. It feels very, very solid and love using it on location scouts with my director, provided you have a long enough cable for power from a battery. Now that the BMPCC is reaching the end of it's life cycle, I'm still glad I got this and can at the very least use the pistol grip for other purposes too such as capturing sound. It really is a fantastic pistor grip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for run 'n' gun! Redrock once again has a solid product. Literally, everything is solid: the handle is entirely metal, as is the cage, and the eyepiece is a nice hard plastic with a smooth/professional finish. The start/stop record button is fantastic! Only downside is there is no convenient way to mount this to a shoulder rig. There are screw holes at the bottom of the cage, but none are located in a spot that would grant access to the battery without having to take the cage off of your shoulder rig. I spoke with Redrock and they said they're engineers are currently exploring options to enable this cage more flexibility with tripods and shoulder rigs. So if you what this on a tripod or shoulder rig, you gotta ditch the cage. Note: the retro look is pretty sweet. I'm not gonna lie, the design approach to the retroflex sold me. I love it when a company adds some style to their products!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quite a helpful, well made piece of gera. This rig solved several big problems for me. I typically shoot outside, often after long hikes. If the sun is out, it is nearly impossible to see the lcd screen. The viewfinder on this device is wonderful, making the camera useable under those conditions. The BMPCC is well made but still it is small, and the cage on this gear gives you a real since of confidence with the cold shoe available for mics, etc. Finally as a very pleasant surprise, grip and trigger do indeed make for a nice three points of contact allowing you to shoot the camera fairly easily, handheld. That's not a perfect solution of course compared with a good tripod, but under many conditions it will work quite well. The rig is very well made and does seem like it can take some serious use. Even the viewfinder, which attaches via magnet, does not seem in any danger of slipping or falling off. Well done from an engineering and manufacturing standpoint. It does add a bit of weight which I suspect is the tradeoff for a well built kit.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Gives camera daylight functionality So I had this product for approximately 2 days. It was really cool - definitely a throw back to super 8mm days. The great thing is it actually makes the BMPCC useable in daylight. The bad thing is it's cheap construction in my opinion. As I was adjusting the diopter it broke. It just snapped off in my hand. To Redrock Micro's defense, I contacted them and immediately sent me the paperwork to get it either repaired or replaced. I am currently waiting on them. I'd love to use it but.... All in all, the unit is quite nice as the viewfinder snaps securely in place via magnets, and the hand grip is very sturdy and includes a handy record start/stop button. There is however a lot of plastic involved in the construction of the viewfinder and I believe a little metal would have made for a more robust product. So I think the Retroflex viewfinder is a little pricey for that amount of plastic. I'm sure the plastic keeps the weight down though. The provided camera cage is very sturdy however and is all metal with plenty of tapped and threaded 1/4x20 holes to mount various items to it. The camera cage also allows the camera to snugly fit in it while providing easy access to battery/SD card door.
