Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

Covering a useful wide-angle focal length range, the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM is a Canon L-series lens distinguished by its constant f/4 maximum aperture, sophisticated optical design, and use of image stabilization to realize sharp imagery. Two ultra-low dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for high clarity and color accuracy, and a Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast. Three aspherical elements are also featured and help to control distortion and minimize spherical aberrations for improved sharpness.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, this wide-angle zoom also features a four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. A ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism also afford quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed and has a protective fluorine coating on the exposed elements for use in trying environmental conditions.

Wide-angle zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 25.6-56mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range.
Two ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Three aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.

Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Reviews

I have replaced my Canon EF 17-40mm with the Canon EF 16-35mm and what a difference it made. This lens is sharp and with the IS, I am able to shoot in much lower light and get quality images. So far, this lens has not let me down.

I had this lens and gave it to a sister-in-law who needed a lens for her new camera. I waited a good while but it was obvious there was a hole in my lens collection that needed filling. I bought this and still love it as my favorite walk around lens on a Canon 5D Mk IV.

Favorite lens.

Amateur using EF/EFs mount lenses since the EOS 350D. This is simply the best lens I've ever used. It produces crystal-clear images on ASP-C and full-frame, with the focal length on full-frame opening up a whole new world of possibilities for landscape and travel shots. I've not tried the 2.8, but at this price you could buy a prime lens to go along with it! Its light weight and IS mean you can walk around all day, for your whole trip, without your arms feeling like jelly. It's great for time-lapse. The lens is almost always on my camera when I leave the house. To anyone looking for their first "L-lens," don't look any further -- you'll likely use this 20x more than a 70-200 :)

so far, so great

I have only been able to use this lens once so far but I can tell you the pictures were amazingly sharp. I still have learning to do, but I can tell you that I do not regret this purchase. I look forward to taking it to the Grand Tetons in a few weeks.

Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L Superb

This purchase was to compliment the various Canon lens I have. I needed a wide angle for nature shoots specifically. Love it and look forward to putting it into use for nature and urban shoots. In the two uploaded test shots, I learned quickly how positioning your view alters the composition between viewing horizontally to the plain vs. at an angle focusing on the skies. Noted how the lamp post concave the further up I shoot. So, this is something I must be aware.

Great Lens!

I shoot a lot of Appalachian Architecture and Landscapes so this lens was exactly what I was looking for to mount on my Canon 5ds r. I don't do much astrophotography or extreme low light so for the price this lens offered the most bang for the buck by far. I've used it a few times so far and it's really sharp!

I have had the 17-40 f4 for ages. I shoot for fun now so upgrading was not a no-brainer. I am glad I did choose to buy! Clearly Canon has made some leaps in design and construction. My lens is almost silent when focusing and it is fast. My handheld test shots were nearly as sharp as my recently purchased 35 f2. The color I am getting on a 5D mkIV is beautiful. I think my EF lens inventory is complete now.

question

I am ready to buy Canon's 16-35 f4L. Can I use a normal UV filter or should I use a thin UV filter?
Asked by: Robert
You can use a normal one. Just be aware that if you add another filter you'd likely get some vignetting, although, with a UV filter, you're typically not adding additional filters, so that point may be moot. I use a regular (not thin) ND filter with mine, and have never come across vignetting issues. I'd also go for the regular one, as usually the thinner ones either cannot hold onto a lens cap, or don't hold onto it as well as the thicker variety.

does anybody feel the zoom ring a little bit hard to turn compared with other canon zoom lenses? would like if it is normal in this lens
Asked by: Esteban
Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens usually has a tight zoom ring when you purchase the lens brand new. As you use it it will become smoother. If iyou need to use strenght to pull the zoom out, I would recomend getting the lens checked or exchange. In thios case you may also hear low noises when the lens is trying to focus or by simply turning the rings on the lens.

Asked by: Laurie
Great choice, a great lens I've also enjoyed, not only for its useful range, but for its marvelous optics with few aberrations. It focuses up very close, as do most wide angles, but does not reach 1:1 macro. If you like working macro, check out the EOS 100 2.8 L IS, a true macro. Cheers!

question

is the warranty international?
Asked by: Darius Y.
The Canon 16-35mm f/4 IS comes with a one-year warranty from Canon USA. You would need to check with Canon locally to see if they would honor the USA warranty. If they will not, the lens would need to be sent back to Canon USA for in warranty service. Otherwise, B&H doe carry an international protection plan.

question

Each of the two are the better lenses Canon L series 16-35mm Or Canon l series 24-70mm.Right now I own a 24-105mm also L series.thank you for your help,Paula Dubin
Asked by: Anonymous
Both of the 16-35mm and 24-70mm L series lenses are some of Canon's highest quality lenses and provide an excellent performance, it really will depend on the focal length you require. Since you have a 24-105mm L series lens already, it may be a bit redundant to get a 24-70mm lens, as you have these focal lengths in the lens you already own. However, the 16-35mm lens will provide a wider angle of view.
