Canon 16-35mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

Covering a useful wide-angle focal length range, the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM is a Canon L-series lens distinguished by its constant f/4 maximum aperture, sophisticated optical design, and use of image stabilization to realize sharp imagery. Two ultra-low dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for high clarity and color accuracy, and a Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast. Three aspherical elements are also featured and help to control distortion and minimize spherical aberrations for improved sharpness.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, this wide-angle zoom also features a four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. A ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism also afford quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed and has a protective fluorine coating on the exposed elements for use in trying environmental conditions.

Wide-angle zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 25.6-56mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range.
Two ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Three aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.

Canon 16-35mm f/4.0 reviews

EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 287.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lens for the money I use this lens for both still and video. I've used the 16-35 f2.8 mark 2 and it's a good lens, but with the introduction of the considerably improved Mark 3, the 2.8 mark 2 is now obsolete, IMHO. Unfortunately its successor is about $2100 - out of my price range. I read many good reviews of the 16-35 f4 IS, and thought for the money I could handle the loss of one f-stop. So far lens is great - sharp, even wide open, responsive autofocus, and solid build. I feel it's a great bang-for-the-buck lens. Nice having the IS. I don't think I'll regret having bought this lens even when I eventually move up to owning the new 2.8 lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tack Sharp I purchased this lens to be my go to wide angle lens for real estate interior shots. I have been using a Tamron 10-24mm for the last few years, but have always felt the focus was too soft. I am trying to stick to Canon L Series lenses as I purchase new glass, so I bought this to shoot my interior shots. The difference is night and day. The Canon is sharp and when I use profile correction in Lightroom the image is awesome from edge to edge. This means I spend less time in post and get a sharper image. I find I still need to use the wider Tamron for smaller rooms, but the 16mm is plenty wide for most of the rooms in the houses I shoot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EF 16-35mm f/4 IS USM Lens This is an upgrade from the original 16-35mm f 2.8. I was a bit skeptical that the f4 could be sharper. So, after extensive testing and comparisons using a Canon 5D MK IV and a MK III, I'm pleased to find the image quality is significantly better. There is less distortion, sharper details, and an overall image improvement. My purpose for this lens is landscapes and architecture interiors and exteriors for real estate. I didn't see a need for f 2.8 so I opted for the f 4. Glad to have saved the dollars in cost and very happy with the results. If you are looking at this lens, ask yourself if you really need f 2.8.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect match for my 5D IV I needed a ultra-wide to match up with my 24-105L and decided the 16-35 f4 with IS would meet my low light needs, and would work great in good light with my dog photography -- This lens focuses very quickly -- I captured a very nice sequence of a dog leaping over a log in AI Servo -- sharp, no misses. The contrast is beautiful and image sharpness is excellent out to the edges. I recommend this lens if your needs do not demand f2.8 and you can make use of this excellent IS for stationary subjects in low light or at low ISO. A bonus is the nifty locking hood -- it mounts like a normal hood on my other L lenses, but has a little release button that locks it in place --

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for filmmaking I used this lens for all of my hand held shooting for an indie film hot on a Canon DSLR. If you're new at this, the IS refers to the Image Stabilizer which is absolutely necessary for most hand held filmmaking. You don't need an aperture lower than 4 for most handheld work either as it's really tough to focus on a moving subject below an f4. So if you're debating between this lens and the 2.8 with no IS, the difference for me was for it's purpose as a primary filmmaking lens. It also takes great stills for events or parties or even real estate with it's nice wide angle. If you're only going to take photos, then you may want the other model of this with no IS and f2.8. Great lens, lightweight, sharp image, very accurate.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very pleased with performance Bought to replace a 17-40L because I was not happy with performance on the wide end of 17-40 when used on a 5DII. The 16-35 F4 is a much better performer in the corners, at least when I compare my 16-35 F4 to my 17-40 F4 (most noticeable on the wide end). I don't really need the IS as the majority of my shots are on a tripod and I'd rather not pay for a feature I don't use. That said, I'm pleased with the optical performance and will be selling my 17-40 F4 to help cover some of the cost. Build quality is typical of Canon's L lenses, solid. AF is quick and quiet. IS is efective. Nice to be able to use the same 77mm filters as the 17-40.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for wide angle photography With a passion to shoot architecture and landscape photography a wide angle lens is a must. This Canon 16-35mm IS F4L doesn't dissapoint. The sharpness from this lens is wonderful, it is useable wide open at f4 and improvements are hard to recognise as you move up to f5.6, f8, f11 etc. It really is a sharp lens and the resolving detail is just amazing - the fine details are really well defined. The build quality is great with high quality materials used and the IS is a wonderful addition to be able to handhold shots in low light etc. Very fast to focus and quite too. Would highly recommend this lens for architecture and landscape photography.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great wide angle lens, although it has its limitations. Great wide angle lens, sharp out to the corners and has excellent color saturation. I purchased this to replace the 17-40 F4L which is also very sharp. The added benefits of this lens is sharpness out to the corner, a bit wider and image stabilization that is very usefull. The photo was shot handheld at 1/8 sec. ISO 1600. F5.6. I do not regret purchasing this over the 16-35 2.8L and am very satisfied with the purchase. The only advantage that I think the 2.8L could have over this lens is possibly in a museum/dark auditorium setting allowing you to select a faster shutter speed.
