The Sermon on the Mount, or The Ten Commandments

Yes, I know the Headline is a bit over the top and grandiose! It's only to point out that before Ansel put these 3 little books out, there was nothing of any comprehensive nature for students of photography to have at hand as guidebooks or textbooks for them to learn the craft of photography from start to finish. With The Camera (I'll call it the Conductor with his baton), that will make sense in a moment, Ansel gives a thorough introduction to the camera and the many ways it's put to use in capturing images along with the lenses and filters that can be utilized in the craft of photography. This was always meant to be a 3-book series covering everything necessary to complete the task of bringing your own images into being. The next book, The Negative went deeper into how in combination with the camera, the Zone System among other things, and how from camera and lens, filters, and exposure, you could create as the conductor, a score worthy of performance. Perhaps, this is making more sense now? The final was how from the camera & photographer, you can create a score worthy of performance, the negative and thus the final book: The Print which covers every aspect after the developing of the negative to the printing of the best possible print or Performance using many techniques to enhance or modify how light and dark and every value in between are displayed in your final work. Ansel once said, The negative is the score, and the print the performance. The 3 books are still relevant to today's photographers even though they may be only doing digital work. They give a deeper insight into how the treatment and use of light, it's manipulation from camera to negative (your RAW file) and finally to the creation of a final image whether it's an artful interpretation or a fully realized image to the best of one's abilities, and a just rendition of what was seen. The Print! Digital has given us many freedoms as photographers but with that has come far more sophisticated and complicated equipment and a learning curve which we old film folk had to come up to speed with. Our cameras were far more simple and basic tools and were entirely driven by our own On Board CPU's! Yes, there are many comprehensive books for students to learn digital photography today and I say they are your first choice! However, these books will give you a more intimate look and understanding of how this craft and art of photography is executed at the highest levels.

Art is a tough business in many ways. It can be difficult for the Right-Brainer to firmly decide what media in which to communicate their emotions. There are great tomes available for the painter, writer, dancer, actor to learn some basic insights into their route to expression. For the photographer, this book is the first step of the 1,000-mile journey. Ansel Adams may only be a guy who made great art posters, to many. To anyone seriously interested in film photography, the road to real accomplishment begins with this book. The Camera will give the shutterbug a terrific base of information upon which to build. Hopefully it will inspire, without sending the student into the abyss of Gear Acqusition Syndrome (GAS). Anyone wanting to work in film photography must start with Ansel Adams. In fact, many of his tenets are germane to the work of digital photographers as well. Money well spent!
