Glyph Technologies S4000 overview

  • 1Description

Designed as production-grade media, the 4TB Studio 7200 rpm USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from Glyph Technologies features a hard drive that spins at 7200 rpm and has a capacity of 4TB for storing data such as videos, images, music, and more. The Studio has one USB 3.0 Type-B port, one eSATA port, and two FireWire 800 ports to connect to either Windows or Mac systems. Using either one of these connections, you can expect data transfer rates of up to 184 MB/s to access your content. Glyph Technologies also supports content creation products such as AVID, Pro Tools, Logic, Nuendo, Cubase, DP, Adobe CC, and more. Included with the Studio is a USB 3.0 cable, a FireWire 800 cable, and an IEC power cable. Protection is provided by a limited 1-year advance replacement warranty, a limited 2-year level 1 data recovery warranty, and a limited 3-year hardware warranty.

General Features

Front Panel LED
The Studio's front panel has a single bi-color LED. The LED will display solid blue when power is on and will flash blue when there is disk activity. The LED will display red if there is a hard drive failure.
Power Switch
The power switch must be held for three seconds to power off the Studio. After three seconds the LED will turn off, and releasing the button will power off the unit. This is a safety precaution against unintended power off.
Internal Power Supply
Glyph uses efficient, high-quality power supplies, selected specifically for the demands of production environments. The Studio has an auto-switching universal power supply. Its input voltage can range from 100-240V at 50/60 Hz, allowing the Studio to be safely used overseas.
Disk Health Monitoring
Each hard drive is continually monitored for temperature changes and if the drive is deteriorating, you can replace it before it fails.
Internal Temperature-Controlled Fan
The Studio has an internal temperature-controlled fan. Software inside the Studio sets the fan's rpm to either high or low speeds.
Rack Mounting
The Studio can be rack mounted in a standard 19" rack with Glyph's optional rack kits. There is a single kit for mounting one drive, and a dual kit for mounting two Studio drives.
Content Creation Applications
Qualified with major audio production packages that support FireWire storage, including Digidesign ProTools, Steinberg Nuendo and Cubase, Apple Logic, MOTU Digital Performer, Cakewalk Sonar, Sony Vegas, and more.
Warranty with Data Recovery and Replacement
Glyph Technologies offers you a limited 3-year warranty, but offers different services during the first, second, and third year. During the first year's advance replacement warranty, Glyph Technologies will send you another Studio before they receive the defective model. For up to 2 years, they will provide data recovery, and hardware is covered up to 3 years.

    Glyph Technologies S4000 reviews

4TB Studio 7200 rpm USB 3.0 External Hard Drive is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE YOU BUY! I bought this drive last month and was pleased with it. However, problems occurred after a while when the drive shows wrong file numbers and contents after I copied my iMovie files to it. I called the costumer service and they had no idea what might happened. They did offer to send me a new drive on condition that a credit number be on hold for a safe return of the old drive, knowing that my personal files can be obtained by them even if I reformat it before I send it back. The drive is still running but in a wrong way. Therefore, I have to rerate this drive as 2 stars as the best.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Quiet, Unreliable I use external drives to store my pro photography output. The Glyph drives were highly recommended by colleagues for reliability and silence. They are silent, but they are extremely unreliable. I have owned 6 of them, 3TB, 4TB and 6TB drives. Every one has failed and had to be sent back. I have OWC and LaCie drives running in the same Firewire daisy chain that have been going for 5 years without an issue. Glyph finally told me that their drives can't be daisy chained using Firewire or the drives will fail. If you are only buying a single drive, you may have very good luck with these drives. If you are planning to use a Firewire chain, look for another brand. Pros: quiet, solid, large capacity. Cons: Can't be used if you have more than one drive on your Firewire cable. Single drive use only on Firewire.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Loud drive, abysmal support This drive is not quiet. I have several other, cheaper external hard drives and the Studio I received was by far the loudest drive of any I've ever owned, clocking in at around 35 to 40 dBA from two feet away when idling. I got in touch with their supposedly first-rate support who were in my experience anything but. Extremely slow-moving and inconsistent in their statements. On several occasions they forgot to respond to my ticket until the next business day, made misleading and inconsistent statements and estimates. I frequently had to write to them to get an update on the status of my ticket at which point it was made clear that they had simply forgotten about it. I shipped the drive in for service at their urging, paying shipping myself. It has been over a week since they received the drive. Last I heard from the support agent originally assigned to my case was 3 days ago when he told me the drive will have shipped out on that day. I called and spoke to another support agent this morning who informed me that the drive only shipped out yesterday. At no point was I informed of any of this. Their service is NOT overnight, and I don't see how any pro can mix or record with the racket this drive makes, no matter what they tell you in their marketing. I am not spending another cent on a Glyph product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Switching over For our video and photo editing we've moved on to Glyph and been very very happy. After seven good years of Gtech, but the last two years seeing multiple failures for multiple reasons on multiple drive types, it was time to switch to Glyph. Humming along so far after a year of use. Love the PC cable and we have two of the portable cases. Excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! Durable, sturdy and doing the job. Switching to Glyphs after almost a decade on G-Techs that arent doing it for me anymore.
