AEO Photo LS4PRO overview

  • 1Description

The Lightning Strike! Pro 4.0 Lithium Shutter Trigger from AEO Photo is a light-activated camera triggering device to capture images of lightning, fireworks, gunfire and other light-generating events. It improves upon version 3.0 with the inclusion of a new Lithium 14500 rechargeable battery that, along with the unit's lower power consumption, enables up to 180 hours continuous operation on a single charge. The Pro 4.0 model provides built-in battery charging capability via its USB Micro B input which features an internal charge safety circuit. The unit can also be powered by the USB connection while charging or without batteries installed. A low battery LED indicator is provided

Also, a low profile "positive action" switch design prevents accidental activation, optimized noise immunity reduces unwanted firings and a 0.3 ms trigger lag time serves to capture shots that might otherwise be missed. The Pro model features a manual sensitivity control override for exacting control of trigger activation.

The Pro Trigger is very compact, measuring just 2.75" long and attaches directly to your camera's hot shoe mount and offers a locking hot shoe and tripod mount. Its 2.5 mm built-in connector accepts cables (sold separately) from numerous cameras. Proprietary electronics allow for image review after every shot and a low profile LED minimizes reflection of light when used shooting through windows and windshields.

Operates on a single Lithium-Ion 14500 (AA) 3.6V rechargeable battery (included). Low power design enables up to 180 hours of continuous shooting on single charge. The Pro model includes a built-in USB Micro B charging port. The USB connection can power the unit and charge the battery during operation and a low battery warning indicator is supported.
Compact, solid lightning trigger, measures 2.75" x 2.25" x 0.75" (7.0 x 5.7 x 1.9 cm)
Detects lightning in the distance and triggers your camera with only a 0.3 milliseconds lag and 1.5 kV isolation from camera electronics. Manual Sensitivity Control Override allows exacting control of trigger response for unique shots and when working in varied environments.
Attaches directly to your camera's hot shoe with a locking hot shoe and tripod mount.
Proprietary electronics allow for image review after every shot.
Low profile "positive action" slide switch will not accidentally activate and drain battery.
Low profile LEDs minimizes reflection of light when used shooting through windows.
The Lightning Strike! 4.0 version has been upgraded to improve its noise immunity from man-made sources. This helps to reduce unintended camera firings from cell-phones, car lights, etc.
Compatible with numerous cameras based on separate purchase of camera-specific cable. 2.5mm interface accepts all AEO cables for a variety of cameras.
Includes protective velour pouch.

    AEO Photo LS4PRO reviews

Lightning Strike! Pro 4.0 Lithium Shutter Trigger is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for what it is...room for improvement With only one tiny lightning storm to test this on I can say it works. It was all cloud to cloud lightning so no spectacular images, yet. Easy setup and easy to operate. But there is a lot of room for improvement. This thing is not in the least weather resistant. I purchased it knowing full well it was not going to be something to set out where it might get wet. I think it is aimed primarily at storm chasers where it will be in a vehicle or those shooting from inside a structure. For those of us that shoot out in the wild and would prefer to not place extra glass between our lenses and what we want to photograph this could be an issue. I would also prefer a 10 turn potentiometer for the sensitivity adjustment. Less than a full turn for the whole range means that getting it right where you want it isn't going to happen. I haven't had enough time to play with it to determine how critical this is. The move to an internal lithium battery that is charged in the unit is a huge leap forward and was a major selling point to me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It works well I've been shooting lightning for years and started using the Nero Trigger (MIOPS) in 2014. I was never able to dial it in so that it was dependable. It would either "hammer" (triggering constantly) or it wouldn't fire when a bolt would strike. I purchased the AEO product last season and was pleasantly surprised. It is adjustable but even if it wasn't, it only triggers when a strike happens. It will trigger on strikes that are out of frame, but that's where the adjustment can help limit that over sensitive triggering. I pulled it out at the beginning of this season and the battery had drained out while sitting for months (not unexpected) but I plugged it in and it took a full charge and is working perfectly. The photo included was a passing storm, mid-afternoon. Shot with Canon 6d, ISO 50, 1/13 sec., f/11 using a cheap Rokinon 14mm completely manual lens.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Died and Started Smoking I bought my Pro 4.0 in late 2017. Used it once without issue. It's 2018, and lightning storms are poping up. Took out my Pro 4 to charge it. It would not charge. The mico USB port started smoking and teh unit almost caught fire. I tried to contact AEO, but they are not responsive.
