RODE Blimp Reviews

The sound insulation jacket is small in size

The windbreaker is very tight and difficult to put on. It is a little small in size. This is either an error or the result of incomplete packaging

Excellent

If you are looking at this you have decided that a "dead cat" is not enough. We own two of these now and have been using them for 7-8 years. They have great features, durable and get the job done. They are like magic when it comes to dealing with wind, you won't be disappointed.. the only thing better is no wind!

Very effective in high wind situations

It comes free of charge with my recent purchase of a NTG5 but doesn't mean I don't have high expectations. At the end it is a quite expensive piece of accessory. When I first loosen up the blimp housing locking screws, one of the rachet lever handles' cap and spring popped out. I found that the tiny plastic cap which holds the spring was snapped on a plastic stem which obviously not a reliable design. I fixed it with epoxy glue and hopefully it's a permanent fix. Before the second use the second lever popped too! I could have lost the levers, tiny springs and the tiny plastic caps if I were using it outdoor. Rode please ensure the very details are designed properly so that we have confident in your products.

Does an excellent job in far from excellent conditions

This does the trick a lot better than its imitators. Knock-offs might look nearly identically and seem just as good, but Rode has a bit of a secret sauce to what they're doing-you can't get a better blimp than this. I was hesitant due to the high price point, but with how well it works I am fine with it. It does the job.

Absolutely necessary outdoors

Great product for outdoor audio. It completely eliminated wind noise in all of our interviews. Even on our most windy days when other equipment was being knocked over, we did not hear any wind noise. Very effective and would definitely recommend. Definitely a necessary part of our gear for outdoor shoots. 10/10

We've been using this blimp outside in the wind and our sound quality is fantastic. Wish we would have purchased this sooner, it really is effective! It does exactly what the description and research says it will do, we couldn't be more pleased!

The only option thats quality, deadcat doesn't fit great.

The only good option on the market, which is why it costs so much. Idk if its a user error, but I struggle to get the deadcat on, it barely fits on the blimp.

Asked by: Liu
Hello Liu, you would want to check with Sennheiser for the dimensions of the MKH 60 and compare them to the dimensions of the Blimp. Good news, if the Blimp isn't long enough, we have and extension that can be purchased as well.

What must I plug the mic into so I'm portable inside out. I'm just starting out
Asked by: Jai
This item acts as a shock mount to protect a condenser mic from vibrations, and as windscreen that fits a variety of Rode brand shotgun microphones. The blimp includes a a short XLR pigtail cable for connecting the mic cable to a boom pole with ease. I am not sure what type of scenario you will be using the mic for, but generally a shotgun mic would attach to a boom pole and be aimed at talent to pick up isolated dialog. The mic would be connected directly into a camera, or into a field mixer/recorder.

I think I understand your question. You would like to use this windshield and shock mount with a shotgun microphone, and you'd like to plug that microphone into a portable audio recorder, and you'd like the whole thing to be battery-powered and portable. You are looking for recommendations. I get it - that is exactly the setup that I use. I purchased this Rode windshield and shock mount kit from B&H. I used these a few months ago with a Rode NTG4+ shotgun microphone (www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1115089-REG), and the whole setup worked great. I used it for an outdoor interview video on a windy day. Great mic, great windshield and shock mount, no wind noise, the audio sounds very professional. All powered by two AA batteries in the portable recorder. To record the audio, I use a Zoom H4n Pro portable digital recorder (www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1253811-REG). The whole setup runs on two AA batteries and you can take it anywhere. The XLR plug on the mic plugs directly into the bottom of the Zoom H4n, and records the audio from the mic directly. The H4n writes high-quality WAV audio files (I use 48khz 24-bit settings) to an SD card that you just pop out, copy to your computer, and you can edit the audio files with any audio or video editing software. The H4n is super flexible - you can use it to record audio from up to two different external microphones, which can be dynamic mics or condenser mics (the H4n optionally provides +48V or +24V phantom power to the condenser mic if needed), with either XLR or 1/4" plugs. (The H4n also has built-in high-quality stereo microphones, if you don't want to attach an external mic.) The blimp and shock mount are designed to attached to any standard boom pole or microphone stand. It's convenient to get a clamp that will hold the Zoom H4n recorder on the boom pole or mic stand, so that you can just hold the boom pole and you don't need to use another hand to hold the Zoom H4n recorder. A good clamp for this is the Camvate 1/4"-20 Super Clamp (www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1369271-REG). You clamp this onto the boom pole or mic stand, and then the Zoom H4n recorder has a 1/4"-20 hole in it that screws right onto the standard 1/4"-20 screw that is on the clamp. Then, plug the XLR (or 1/4") cable from the microphone into the H4n recorder. This Rode windshield and shock mount are a great combo. Put them together with a shotgun mic, a boom pole or mic stand, and a portable recorder that accepts an external mic (like the Zoom H4n), and you are good to go. All powered with a couple of AA batteries. Very professional setup, and reasonably priced. Good luck, and happy recording!
