Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 Aluminum Tripod

The Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 Aluminum Tripod is a three-section support that replaces the 055XPROB tripod. It has a load capacity of 44 lb and extends from 3.5" to 67". Its legs are secured by the Quick Power Locks. These updated flip locks increase the tripod's rigidity by 50%, and its load capacity by 4.4 lb over its predecessor.

A redesigned center column has a "one finger" operation, and includes an Easy Link attachment for attaching accessories such as an LED light or a reflector. The center column can be positioned horizontally, allowing for low-angle and macro photography. The upper disc where a tripod head is mounted has been redesigned as well, and now has a bull's eye bubble level that rotates 360° so you can locate it where you can see it. This allows you to level your camera on both the horizontal and vertical planes.

Manfrotto XPRO Magnesium Ball Head with 200PL-14 Quick Release Plate

This XPRO Magnesium Ball Head from Manfrotto features an integrated RC2 quick release cam lock and a 200PL-14 Quick Release Plate. RC2 compatible quick release plates such as the 200PL-14 can be removed from the head by pulling the cam lock's spring-loaded lever, which also allows the plate to be instantly reattached. The cam lock also features a safety catch to prevent the 200PL-14, or another compatible quick release plate from accidentally disconnecting.

The XPRO Magnesium Ball Head with 200PL-14 Quick Release Plate has a load capacity of 33.1 lb and can be attached to tripods or other support systems that feature a 3/8"-16 mount. By loosening this XPRO Magnesium Ball Head's primary locking knob, its ball-and-socket joint can be quickly swiveled, angled, fully tilted, or returned to its upright position. Toward the ball head's base is a secondary locking knob that controls the ability to rotate the head 360°. An additional knob opposite the secondary locking knob can be rotated to apply tension control to the ball-and-socket joint's movements.

Cameras or accessories that are compatible with a 1/4"-20 mount can be connected to the 200PL-14 quick release plate which measures 1.7 x 2.1 x 0.4" and has a rubberized, non-slip surface.

MT055XPRO3 Aluminum Tripod with MHXPRO-BHQ2 XPRO Ball Head Kit Reviews

Inspect the tripod for quality issues!

I'll share my experience to help everyone. Tripod suffers from quality issues as of April 2026. Be sure to check and inspect the full tripod when you buy it. I had to go through 2 tripods before receiving my 3rd tripod that was acceptable. My issues: 1) Tripod legs did not extended freely and easily when you open the leg locks (clamps). Upon closer inspection, one of the legs were slightly bent. Be sure to check the operation of all legs. 2) "Manfrotto" logo on one of the legs was scratched. 3) Excessive rattling sound inside one of the tripod legs. Sounds like a loose piece of metal inside the leg. Positives: 1) B&H was very good at sending replacement tripods. 2) The tripod itself is very good, robust, and functional. Just make sure you inspect for quality.

I Was Looking For A Good Tripod For My Junior 410 And This One Was Recommended And So Far Is Working Out Well For Me. I Was Using An Old Vanguard Tripod With Skinny Legs And Locks Which Worked Fine For Many Years As A Full Use Tripod And Monopod. But When I Got Into Astrophotography , I Ended Up Kicking The Skinny Legs By Accident And Well, Down It Went. Fortunately I Was Able To Catch The Camera On Its Way Down. Now You Might Say, I Should Put Lights On The Legs And Yes I Do But I Still Manage To Kick The Legs. So Now My New Junior 410 Mount Fits Nicely On The 2 1/2” Mounting Plate (a Bit Different From My 1” Mounting Plate On My Vanguard). The 055 Is A More Robust Heavy Duty Tripod That When Uh Accidentally Kicked, Holds Its Ground Nicely. I Had The Choice Of Aluminum Or Carbon Fiber And Chose The Aluminum; Not Because Of The Lesser Price But More Of The Heavier Weight (thinking About My Vanguard). It’s Still Light Enough To Carry Around With The Junior 410. You Have To Be A Bit Mindful Of The Adjustable Locks As To Not Pinch Your Fingers When Locking ( Also Noted In The Directions). There Is A Leveling Bubble And A Female Threaded Port For Accessories. The Center Column Can Extend Fully Upward And Turn 90 Degrees While Always Being Attached To The Tripod. There Is A Clip On The Side Of The Mounting Plate To Be Used When The Column Is At 90 Degrees For A Counterweight. Another Big Plus Is There Is Plenty Of Wiggle Room In Height, Me Being 6 Feet Tall, Without Having To Crouch Down To Look Through The Camera. Additionally It Is Made In Italy. Finally BH Photo Is Second To None In Its Ease Of Searching For What I’m Looking For, It Doesn’t Give You 5,000 Choices That Have Little To Do With What You Want. It’s Concise And To The Point. Their Shipping Is Fast And The Packaging Well Protected. Overall I Am Pleased With My Purchase.

Asked by: Michael
The tripod itself has a leveling bubble that indicates when it is level. You don't need the ball head.

Would I be able to use a medium to large size gimbal head on this tripod?
Asked by: Ron
The Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 Aluminum Tripod has a maximum support weight of 19.8 lb. Technically, as long as the total weight you are putting on the tripod including the head, camera body and lens is no more than around 19 lbs it should be fine.

Is this tripod’s center post reversible to allow the camera to be positioned between the three legs of the tripod?
Asked by: Matt
This tripod has a center post that can be positioned at 90° relative to the chassis. To invert 180° however, is possible, though a very difficult, puzzle-like process. It involves removing the center column with a second press of the column pin, then making sure the red half-shell ( Manfrotto part R103973 ) is in the low position, next, reaching in the shell to keep the black pin ( Manfrotto part R103908 ) pressed in, and following through with the center column itself. It does not appear to be formally designed for inversion. Hope this helps.
