Audio-Technica ATW-1701/L overview

  • 1Description

The Audio-Technica ATW-1701/L System 10 Camera-Mount Digital Wireless Lavalier Microphone System is designed to be placed in the cold shoe or hot shoe of a video camera, DSLR, mirrorless, or other similar camera for digital film making and electronic news gathering (ENG) applications.

The compact camera-mountable ATW-R1700 receiver features an independent headphone monitor output, and selectable balanced or unbalanced audio outputs on 3.5mm mini-jack connectors. The unit is powered by an internal rechargeable Li-Ion battery, and both the receiver and bodypack transmitter battery life indicators are displayed on the receiver. This system comes with a wearable bodypack transmitter with 10 mW RF output powered by two 1.5V AA batteries (not included) for an effective operating range of approximately 100'. Additionally, the MT830cW omnidirectional lavalier microphone is included for connection to the bodypack transmitter.

The ATW-1701/L system operates in the 2.4 GHz range and is immune to both TV and DTV interference. For reception the receiver implements time, frequency, and space diversity processing with instantaneous channel selection, sync, and setup.

Frequency Diversity sends the signal on two dynamically allocated frequencies for interference-free communication. Time Diversity sends the signal in multiple time slots to maximize immunity to multipath interference. Space Diversity uses two antennas on each transmitter and receiver to maintain signal integrity.

    Audio-Technica ATW-1701/L reviews

ATW-1701/L System 10 Camera-Mount Digital Wireless System with Omni Lavalier Mic is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5 Star Performance for DSLR Videography I had been researching for weeks and had actually tried several microphones with my SONY A58 DSLR. Unfortunately, the automatic gain control is a problem for shotgun mics and since most of my work is interview type situations I decided to give this a try. B&H THANK YOU for having this in stock. You're one of the few companies that did. I have had this setup in the field for a short time but it is a stellar performer. The system is easy to setup and use and the sound quality is great even without post-production work. Love the versatility of the unit. Very impressive for my use at an affordable price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An elegant and cost-effective solution Having used until now UHF remote microphones in the $500+ price bracket, this solution is both more cost-effective and has some benefits. We cover events on many continents and authorized UHF frequencies are not the same across borders. There is also talk of the FCC selling some of the frequencies for other uses. The AT solution of using the Wi-Fi 2.4 band cuts though all that, and works well. The receiver is also intelligently equipped with both an audio-out connector to feed the sound into your DLSR, and a headphone socket to monitor the recording. If you have a Canon 70D or 6D, neither of which has a headphone output during recording, this is a real plus.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from System 10 - Camera-Mount Digital Wireless System with Lavali I'm really not sure how to rate this product and that's why the 3 star rating. The system worked fine. However, it did not meet my needs. Let me explain: I bought this system because it's advertised to be able to handled up to 8 transmitters with 1 receiver. I thought this was a very good idea and would save me money. BUT, I learned after getting the AT10 that it can only receive ONE transmitter at a time. You must turn off all other transmitters except the one you are using. Frankly, I can't think of a situation where this would be useful, and certainly not in film-making. I returned the product without ever using it and exchanged it for 2 other wireless mics.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Mic overall This mic gives you fairly good audio. The biggest problem is the chargeable internal battery on the receiver. It only lasts about 7 hours and not 12 as they claim. If you shoot all day that is a problem. I would much rather have them run on AA so I can shoot as long as I need. The mute button is very easily hit by the talent when they adjust the transmitter but it you power it and hit the pair button it disables the mute function. Overall for the price it isn't too bad, I would buy this again as a backup to the current one I have when the receiver dies.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfomed well With with my HD Sony video camera to record a wedding. The microphone was very sensitive and picked up everyone within a 10 foot circle with no problems. The transmitter worked very well through walls and at long distances with line of site. Two small complaints with the product. The first is that the receiver does not fit into the hot shoe of the Sony camcorder. I need to check with B&H to see if they have a smaller mount for camcorders as it is a pain to use as a mobile unit. The other is that the microphone that is provided with the unit does not have a wide dynamic range. I will be contacting B&H to upgrade the lapel mic as well. Overall a great value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic sound quality I recently attended a trade show where I had to film multiple interviews for my client. I stuck the Audio Technica System 10 on my camera and took off. After using it for a couple of days in indoor and outdoor settings, I can say that I am a big fan - with one complaint (more on that in a second). NO INTERFERENCE: The System 10 was very easy to set up and use. It's basically plug it in and go. I used it on my dslr and the sound was great. In the past, I have rented the sennheiser microphones and while the sound quality was good, every show I worked had interference. Not one time did that become an issue with this system. It worked well in a windy situation. While there was some noise, it was no more than I would have anticipated. I didn't use it at long range, so I can't speak to that. BUILD QUALITY: The build quality is good, but not great. It is a lot of plastic and it is a little bulkier than other systems, but I can handle that at the price point. ONE NEGATIVE: My one big complaint is that the receiver has a rechargeable battery system. That sounds good at first, but the draw back is that if you are doing a long day of filming and it dies, you have to plug it in and wait for it before you can continue. I would have much preferred to have batters in it that I could replace when they die. Overall, it was a good system. For someone starting out and with limited audio knowledge, it does the hard work for you and just works!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointing I normally rely on a Sony UWP-D11 wireless system, which performs for me flawlessly. But I wanted an additional camera mount system and B&H had this at a good price, so I took a chance. My mistake. It's obviously not fair to compare this product to one that costs maybe 30% more, and for the price I could have lived with some of Audio Technica's downsides: The ATW-1701 is awkward and bulky compared to the Sony, and the build quality is plastic instead of metal. The fact that the receiver does not have replaceable batteries (while the transmitter does), so it requires recharging instead of a new set of AAs, is another disadvantage. But what I couldn't live with was the sound: in several test recordings made in different rooms, I kept hearing a low-level sound like somebody was faintly crumbling Saran Wrap in the background. The manual warns that the receiver is vulnerable to interference from routers and WI-IF systems and should always be 30 feet away -- maybe that was the issue, maybe not. It's possible that I could have experimented further and found a way to at least reduce the noise, but it didn't seem worth the hassle given my reservations overall. The supplied MT830cW mic is also in the budget category, and sounded like it. Usable, not terrible. I would have spent the money to replace it with something better, if it wasn't for all the ATW-1701's other issues. The other reviews suggest this system might be an appropriate choice for a lot of folks -- you might not have the interference issue. Or if you do, you might not notice it, particularly if you're using it in a environment where there's some background noise away. I actually didn't hear it at first, listening in a quiet, acoustically treated studio though monitors. But through headphones, the noise was unacceptable. I sent the AT-1701 back for a refund.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best DSLR audio solution available! Like most of you who may be looking for a wireless solution I stumbled upon the System 10. I have tried both the Sennheiser G3 and Sony UWP and they lack the features the system 10 has. G3 doesn't have a way for you to monitor the audio going into the camera unless you are feeding your audio to a recorder but that would defeat the purpose of going away from double system recording. The Sony didn't impress me too much and I had trouble with the gain. Those two units are also several hundred dollars more. When I received the system 10 it took less that 3 minutes to hook everything up and the audio is crystal clear and professional quality. For those of you using Canon, go into your audio settings and choose Manual. Once in manual mode lower the volume all the way down and then bump it up one click. Exit the menu and your audio levels will be distortion and hiss free.
