I own two of these now, one for a laptop, another for a small mixer. I was at-first concerned about how well the center adjustment clamp worked, but then realized there was a (partly) hidden adjustment screw behind the clamp handle. One minor adjustment there and all's been well since (including deciding to purchase another). The sticky-pad has remained appropriately tacky w/o leaving a residue on the bottom of my laptop and mixer, so I'm pleased with that, too!

Samson does not provided the max load capacity for this stand, however it was design for laptops therefore it can't hold anything heavier then a few pounds.

Is the silicone surface that sticks to the laptop separate from the stand in the package? Based on the reviews I don't plan on even using it and just want to know if it would have to be covered or if I could avoid putting it on in the first place.

Mine did come with the silicone attached and came with a film cover on it as well (to keep the dust off I assume). The silicone is VERY sticky. But I would imagine you could remove it from the stand, but you might damage the silicone in the process... but no it was not separate from the stand.

I didn't weight it, but I'm guessing about 8 to 10 pounds. Pretty hefty. The weight helps to make is stable, but it's not that easily portable.
