Formatt Hitech FC85NDG0.9 overview

  • 1Description

The Formatt-Hitech 85 x 110mm Firecrest Graduated ND 0.9 Filter helps to darken specific areas of an image, such as bright skies, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image. The filter is densest at the edge and tapers to clear by the middle, with a soft-edged line of transition between the density and clear areas. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and the 0.9 density provides a 3 stop reduction in light from entering the lens.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the Schott Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multi-coating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multi-coating is also scratch-resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. This filter measures 3.3 x 4.3" / 85 x 110mm and is 0.08" / 2mm-thick, making it compatible with the 85 Filter Holder. Its vertical orientation indicates that the density's line of transition runs parallel to the short side of the filter.

Graduated ND 0.9 filter for darkening skies and other bright areas of the image.
Provides a 3 stop reduction in light in selective areas.
Soft-edge transition is ideal for circumstances there is not a distinct line of separation between the bright and dark zones of the image.
A vertical orientation filter's line of transition runs parallel to the short side of the filter.
Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.
The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multi-coating is water- and scratch-resistance for greater overall durability.
Schott Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and its 2mm-thick design is compatible with the 85 Holder.

    Formatt Hitech FC85NDG0.9 reviews

85 x 110mm Firecrest Graduated ND 0.9 Filter (Vertical Orientation) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent quality I use this in a Cokin P series holder on a Canon 16-35 f4 L and occasionally on a 100-400 II L and it works great. I modified the holder by gluing a soft gasket made out of a black microfiber lens cleaning cloth along the top and bottom rims to prevent light leaks and it works great. Also, since the Cokin holder can hold 2 filters and this makes it a little too thick, I used heavy duty wire cutters to remove the outer filter slot. All works great and images shot through this filter are snappy with no appreciable loss of contrast or sharpness. My only gripe is that the case is on the big side. Overall, a good price for a great filter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent product, but... ...the cloth pouch is so small that it's hard to slide the filter out without getting finger prints on it. Also, the case is way too big. The filter measures 3.34 x 4.33 and the case is 5.5 x5.5. The case is twice volume it needs to be to hold the filter (case=30.25 square inches and the filter=14.5 square inches). Formatt is pretty clearly using one size case to cover several different filter sizes. Given the price of this, they can, and should, do better by their customers. That said, the filter is well made out of top quality materials, and density is right on (3 stop reduction in the center-top of the filter). Remember, illustrations of the filter are made by placing it on a white background, which makes it look twice as dark - light reduced going in and reflected light reduced going out. Miffed about the case, but I'd buy it again. I think it's by far the best filter anywhere near its price, and the only one near its price that is truly neutral and multicoated.
