QNAP TS-EC1280U Overview

The TS-EC1280U-RP 12-Bay Turbo NAS Storage Solution from QNAP is an ideal NAS device for performing data backups, file synchronizations, and remote access. The array is powered by a quad Xeon processor and 4GB of RAM, and it features 12 hot-swap bays that can house hard drives or SSDs. In addition to the drive bays, the NAS provides two mSATA ports for installing optional mSATA drives that can be used for caching to improve performance. You also have the option of installing up to four SSDs in the drive bays to be used for caching.

The storage drives are hot swappable and can be configured to provide either performance, redundancy, or both. When additional storage is required, this NAS can support up to 700TB via optional QNAP RAID expansion enclosures. The array features four onboard Gigabit Ethernet ports, and an optional 10 GbE adapter can be installed for higher throughput. The NAS is also equipped with a removable tray that provides easy access to upgrade or replace components without removing the unit from the rack mount.

The TS-EC1280U-RP Turbo NAS can be used as a data center for storing videos and data files. The NAS supports SMB/CIFS, NFS, and AFP protocols for file sharing across Windows, Mac, Linux/UNIX networks. You can back up data to another location with Real-time Remote Replication. This feature transfers data between the TS-EC1280U-RP and a remote QNAP NAS, FTP server, or an external drive. To protect the data stored on the drives, this NAS is validated with FIPS 140-2 AES 256-bit encryption to prevent unauthorized access even if the storage drives or the entire system are stolen.

The QTS operating system is based on Linux and it delivers services such as file storage management, backup, surveillance, and more. One such notable application supported by the TS-EC1280U-RP Turbo NAS is the VPN Server, which provides an easy way for administrators to create a secure private server and allows employees to log on from outside the office to access business applications and files. The TS-EC1280U-RP Turbo NAS can be used as a Surveillance Station to remotely record videos from a wide range of over 2,600 compatible IP camera models. You can also install the VMobile app on your smartphone to monitor live feeds from the Turbo NAS anytime and anywhere. Additional applications are available for the TS-EC1280U-RP Turbo NAS to allow iSCSI, virtualization, and so on to increase your business efficiency.

QTS Operating System
This system offers a user interface that you can create and group desktop shortcuts, monitor system information in real-time, and allows you to open multiple application windows to run multiple tasks at the same time. Some of the included apps are Storage Manager, Shared Folders, File Station, Backup Station, Virtualization, Domain Security, System Logs, myQNAPcloud, Qsync, and App Center
Performance
The TS-EC1280U-RP supports 6 Gb/s hard drives driving over 3,500 MB/s throughput and 390,000 IOPS. Featuring an Intel Xeon E3 v3 Quad-Core Processor and 4 GB DDR3 ECC RAM, the TS-EC1280U-RP enhances efficiency of CPU-consuming tasks and serves more concurrent tasks at the same time.
Internal Cache Ports for IO Acceleration
The NAS provides two mSATA ports that can be used for caching to improve the overall performance by installing optional mSATA drives. You can also install up to 4 SSDs in the bays to be used for caching. This improves the overall workflow of random IOPS demanding applications such as database and virtualization. The internal cache port design reserves the space of hard drive tray for more storage capacity.
Removable Motherboard Tray
This allows easy access to upgrade or install additional RAM, internal cache, and 10 GbE adapter without removing the entire NAS storage system from the rack mount.
10 GbE Ready
Four Gigabit Ethernet ports are built-in and an optional 10 GbE adapter can be installed. The TS-EC1280U-RP is ideal for use in data centers to store large amounts of data and for editing large sized video files in real time without the need to transfer them to a desktop computer first.
Storage Capacity Expansion
The TS-EC1280U-RP can increase its storage capacity by cascading multiple QNAP RAID expansion enclosures to offer up to 700TB via the expansion in and out ports. This is useful for large data applications such as video surveillance, data archiving, TV broadcast storage, and more.
QNAP Flexible Volume
This provides a more secure and flexible way to store NAS data. This allows storage pooling with multiple RAID group protection, thin provisioned volume with space reclaim, block-level iSCSI LUN, and online capacity expansion. The QTS Storage Manager neatly presents tools and options for managing system storage which simplifies the process of NAS capacity expansion and QNAP RAID expansion enclosure management.
Cross-Platform File Sharing, Centralized Data Storage
The TS-EC1280U-RP supports SMB/CIFS, NFS, and AFP protocols for file sharing across Windows, Mac, Linux/UNIX networks. Data, logs, and ISO images of CDs and DVDs can be centrally stored on the NAS. It offers an integrated antivirus solution to protect files. The Windows AD and LDAP services enable system administrators to configure user permissions by using existing Windows AD server, LDAP server or NAS build-in LDAP service.
Backup Solutions
QNAP NetBak Replicator supports scheduled and real-time data backup on Windows OS. Mac Time Machine is also supported to provide Mac OS X users with a solution to back up data to the TS-EC1280U-RP.
Recovery Solutions
Real-Time Remote Replication supports real time or scheduled data backup to a remote Turbo NAS or FTP server and synchronizes files to a remote folder from a local folder with better backup efficiency and reduced backup time. This NAS also supports rsync protocol to back up data to another remote server on a scheduled basis. Besides, data can be backed up to a cloud storage service and restored to the TS-EC1280U-RP anytime.
Security Options
The TS-EC1280U-RP provides numerous security options, such as encrypted access, IP blocking, and so on. IT administrators can control the access rights of each user to different folders, preventing unauthorized access to important files. The TS-EC1280U-RP is validated with military level FIPS 140-2 AES 256-bit encryption, preventing the sensitive business data from unauthorized access and breach even if the hard disk drives or the entire system were stolen.
Virtualization Applications
The TS-EC1280U-RP is VMware Ready, Citrix Ready, compatible with Microsoft Hyper-V certification and Windows Server 2012, benefiting flexible deployment and management in the virtualization environments. It supports VMware VAAI and Microsoft ODX to increase performance by offloading server loading for ESXi and Hyper-V respectively, and supports QNAP vSphere Client plug-in and QNAP SMI-S provider with enhanced efficiency of operations and management in virtualization applications.
Multiple Operating System Support
The Virtualization Station transforms the TS-EC1280U-RP into a 2-in-a-box NAS that can function as an all-in-one NAS and a virtualization platform. It supports multiple operating systems, fast virtual machine creation, virtual machine import/export, and snapshot. With the web-based interface, you can run desktop operations and centrally manage all virtual machines created on the TS-EC1280U-RP. Furthermore, you can download VMs on demand from the online VM markets and import them to TS-EC1280U-RP to use directly without any complex procedure.

File Synchronization Across Multiple Devices
The Qsync utility turns your NAS storage system into a safe data center for file synchronization with large storage capacity. Any file uploaded to the TS-EC1280U-RP will be made available for all linked devices, such as computers, laptops or mobile devices. Qsync is especially useful for frequent travelers to manage files and always have the most updated files on different devices. Qsync provides multiple ways of file synchronization and group file sharing, greatly enhancing the flexibility of collaboration.
Surveillance Solution
This NAS can be set up as a Surveillance Station that supports a wide range of over 2,600 compatible IP camera models and expandable IP camera channel licenses. It supports real-time monitoring, video and audio recording and playback with flexible options to customize.
