Resident Audio T4 overview

  • 1Description

The T4 from Resident Audio is Thunderbolt equipped, four input, four output audio interface with support for 24-bit/96 kHz audio and near-zero latency for virtually instantaneous recording and playback. In addition, the unit is sturdy while being lightweight and truly portable by virtue of being entirely bus powered from the Thunderbolt port. Add a pair of MIDI I/O ports and the unit extends its usefulness for both studio and live applications.

Tilted tactile gain controls with three-color wraparound LEDs allow for quickly setting optimal levels, even in low-light onstage environments. Four combo XLR/TRS input jacks accept microphones, instruments and line-level devices, with phantom power available globally for all inputs, and four balanced TRS outputs provide for connection to speakers and external mixers. An auto-detecting Multichannel Output Mode and Smart Monitoring automatically switch the outputs between stereo and mono depending upon input configuration.

When a connection is made to output jack 4, the unit operates in multichannel mode. Four discrete monophonic output signals from the computer are routed to the corresponding four output jacks, with the live input signal sent to the headphone jack only. When no connection is made to output jack 4, the interface switches to stereo mix mode and all live input signals, along with all output signals from the computer are internally mixed to stereo and routed to outputs 1 and 2. In this mode, output 3 can be used as a second headphone source.

    Resident Audio T4 reviews

T4 - Thunderbolt Audio Interface is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! I play in a New Order tribute band called Substance. I run my sequences and click track in Apple Main Stage on a MacBook Air. I wanted to find a Thunderbolt audio interface so i didn't have to use a USB hub live. We have a couple USB keyboard controllers that take up the 2 USB connections available on the MB Air. This interface works great and is built like a tank. I can't believe the price! I love that it has 4 outputs. I can send my drummer his own feeds of the sequence and click seperately so he can mix to his liking. I highly recommend this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Simple but works great I've used this to record live vocals, guitar and horns. The latency on my mid 2014 Macbook pro using Ableton Live is not even an issue and the sound is great. On paper it looks like this unit is lacking because it has limited options for live monitoring & audio routing and the only built in software is a simple controls panel to adjust inputs and outputs (no built in effects). In practice, I find that those things don't matter because the latency is so low that can use the built in effects and monitoring options that come with all DAW software. The thunderbolt interface is so fast that I find myself not even using the direct monitor option on the interface. The lack of real meters is a bit of a drawback, but instead it has color coded rings around on the input knobs: green for signal preset, orange for hot signal and red for overload. These work fine and I find I don't even need to use the software panel which does have full bar meters if you need them. The color coding on the software panel is not so great for people like me with a color deficiency: Light green meter bars on a high gray background but as I said I don't need it anyway. For $ you get great sound & latency, and the ability to record 4 tracks at a time!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Newer Mac users beware! Bought this interface only to find that I can't connect it to my new iMac, which has Thunderbolt 3. The device comes with Thunderbolt 2. The APPLE Thunderbolt 3 Adapter DOES NOT WORK WITH THIS DEVICE. Support from Resident Audio was quick, but the only adapter that will work is a "Cable Matters" adapter ...at 2-3 times the price. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE that RA has NOT posted in the specs on their site. Also, be careful installing the driver. After much troubleshooting, I had to re-install the OS because it froze my machine. Turns out RA gives conflicting order of installation on their site video vs in the guide in the package. Too bad. Maybe it's a good device? Don't know.
