PocketWizard PlusX overview

  • 1Description

The PocketWizard PlusX 2 Pack provides 2 transceivers for a wireless solution to triggering a studio or portable flash unit remotely at distances up to 1,600'. It's also possible, using one transceiver on-camera and the other acting as a receiver on your remote flash, to trigger multiple flashes positioned near the receiver using their onboard optical slaves.

The PlusX Transceiver offers 10 channels that are easily navigated via the large backlit channel dial. Auto-Sensing technology allows it to instantly fluctuate between transmitter and receiver duties. The PlusX is fully backward-compatible with all other PocketWizard radios slaves and as well as flash units with built-in PocketWizard reception such as Sekonic, Photogenic, Norman, Bowens and Dynalite. Sync speeds as high as 1/250 sec. for focal plane shutters and 1/500 sec. for leaf shutters are possible with triggering speeds up to 14.5 frames per second. A hot shoe on the unit and a 3.5mm sync port allows connection to devices with or without hot shoes. This specially boxed kit includes 2 PlusX Transceivers, 1 miniphone to miniphone cable, 1 PC cord and 1 adapter. Two lanyards and an instruction book are also included. PocketWizard PlusX reviews

PlusX 2 Pack is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 169.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bulky and Difficult to Manage For Handheld Flash PocketWizards may be the gold standard for radio triggers, but I think that they are bulky and are difficult to manage when using off-camera flash unless you have a studio. Having to connect the flash via cables is also a hassle. They should develop a smaller unit that connects to the hotshoe of the flash so that you don't have to juggle two separate pieces when using a remote flash. I will go back to using a cheaper Cowboystudio radio flash remote which eliminates the wires and is much, much smaller and extremely cheap. I guess these would work in my studio, but the wires and bulk of the units make them unfriendly in the field.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unreliable While PocketWizard is the lauded as the go-to solution for reliable remote control, I could not get them to keep the connection. I could get them to work if turned them of and then on again or changed channel-rather inconvenient to change two transceivers and the Sekonic light meter. After trouble shooting various combinations returned the kit and ordered more 15-foot sync cables. I am disappointed with PW, but B&H made the return easy. The may have been a bad batch, but in a day and age where wireless cost next to nothing and reliability should not be an issue; they should work for half the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the older models! These newer PlusX models are syncing better than my older models. We had a family session we were shooting and we couldn't get our older units to connect. I tried switching different pairs of Transmitter and Receivers, made battery changes, cord changes; and finally about 15 minutes later was able to start the session. Knowing we had a Prom coming up and could not take any chances of any time delays due to the older models not communicating, I ordered a set of the PlusX's. They worked without a hitch!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Be Sure to Register for 3 Year Warranty We use the Pocket Wizard on a daily basis for our product photography. It worked great for the first few months, but after about four months of daily use the connection slowly started fading in and out. Now, about six months into purchasing this item it takes us having to shut off both Pocket Wizards (which is extremely inconvenient when you are working with models) in order to get them to sync again. And even once they sync we only get two or three flashes and then we have to turn them both off again. It's an absolute hassle and it's incredibly unfortunate seeing how we paid over a hundred for a cheaply made product that sometimes works after four months of use. And by cheaply made I mean that when we went to turn off the Wizard that was connected to the light the switch to turn it on/off broke. Now we have to remove the battery completely and reinsert it to get those two or three flashes. Despite our own personal hassle with it, it looks like a majority of users do not have an issue with it, so yes, I would recommend this product but I STRONGLY recommend getting an extended warranty and replacing it as soon as you notice the wizards not syncing (seeing how they don't replace it if any cosmetic damage occured despite it being the fault of the cheap material they use).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dumbed Down for the Good I use these with Nikon Speedlights, White Lightning mono heads, and Comet pack and head systems. They work great and are simple and easy to use. I love the lighted number frequency. I think that the power switch could be larger and perhaps made of white plastic so that it is easier to see. I also wish these were made out of metal, and yes I would happily pay more for them if that was the case. I am a professional and I want and need gear that is tough and can take some abuse. I've seen other photogs with PW gear and frequently the hotshoe plate is partially broken, and it won't sit securely in a hotshot that way.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything i needed. I have worked with the PocketWizard Plus iii's as well as the older models for a while at most of the studios i work out of. however when it came to purchasing transceivers for my own personal work i turned to the PlusX. Very simple and easy to use, the PlusX does exactly what i need them to do. 10 channels give more versatility if needed but for the most part they are just simple enough for triggering my lights, Obviously exactly what they are intended to do. The fact that PocketWizard offers a 2 pack on this product is brilliant and very convenient. I would definitely be purchasing more when the tome comes.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Warning. Only syncs to 1/200. Just got these the other day and though they sync perfectly right out of the box, they do not sync to 1/250 of a second. If you look at their fine print it says syncs up to 1/250. My set of pocket wizards was not up to it I guess. With a lot of cheap options I expected better for the amount spent. 1/200 just doesn't cut it for sharpness IMHO for the work I do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PocketWizard PlusX working Been through several sets of slaves for off camera flash over the past thirty years. Always go back to my original Radio Slave's when the new sets die. The third and final set finally gave up the ghost, so I purchased the PW PlusX. So far so good. Time will tell on their longevity. The build quality is great and the fact they take double A batteries is a plus. Almost foolproof as far as function.
