Miops MIOPS overview

  • 1Description

The MIOPS Camera Trigger is a versatile way to capture images using lightning, sound, or laser to trigger your camera or flash. It features six different modes of operation with adjustable sensitivity depending on your given shooting situation.

In addition to the lightning, sound, laser, timelapse, and HDR modes enable additional creative output. An external port can connect to various sensors to trigger your camera based on variables such as temperature, pressure, or humidity. An app for either iOS or Android allows you to control the MIOPS from your smartphone using Bluetooth connectivity. When not using a smartphone, all functions can be controlled by a color LCD screen on the unit.

Lightning Mode
A built-in light sensor detects changes in light and triggers your camera's shutter in just a few nanoseconds. You can capture only bright lightning strikes, or the smallest strikes, simply by adjusting the sensitivity. This mode can also be used to capture fireworks, or other events where you need to capture images based on changes in light.
Laser Mode
The MIOPS has a built-in sensor to detect when a laser beam is broken, thereby triggering your camera's shutter. This is useful for detecting subjects such as water drops, animals, or intruders when conducting surveillance.
Sound Mode
MIOPS's built-in microphone can detect sound, triggering your camera or flash to capture things like breaking glass, or a popping balloon. You can adjust the delay of the trigger as well as the sensitivity of amount of sound needed to trigger the shutter.
Timelapse Mode
This mode lets you specify the interval time anywhere between one second and one hour, as well as how many photos to take. The LCD screen will turn off to save energy, allowing you to take a timelapse photo for days, or even months if you use an external power source.
HDR Mode
Even if your camera doesn't have a bracketing feature, MIOPS allows you to set a center exposure, as well as the over and under exposures needed in order to make an HDR image.
External Port
A port on the MIOPS can accept any external trigger that has an output signal between 0V and 3V, such as a temperature, pressure, or humidity sensor.
Combining Sensors
You can combine sensors with MIOPS's Scenario feature by creating a custom scenarios with up to five different steps. For example, you can set the MIOPS to start taking timelapse photos only after it detects lightning.
Triggering Your Camera and Flash
MIOPS has two dedicated outputs, one for a flash, and another for a camera. They are electrically isolated from each other, reducing risk of a short circuit. The MIOPS trigger can be used with multiple cameras (not simultaneously) by simply changing the camera connection cable.
Mini-USB Port
The mini-USB port allows you to charge your Li-ion battery, as well as update the MIOPS's firmware.
MIOPS can be used with any cameras which have a remote shutter trigger port or an IR port, and any and flash units with a PC sync jack.

    Miops MIOPS reviews

Camera Trigger is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Well.... not so much Not impressed. Out of the box, I couldn't get the lightning detector to work with flipping overhead lights on and off in a dark room with any of the sensitivity settings consistently. The next evening I was blessed with a large lightning event in the area and went out to give it a real world try. No go at various sensitivity settings. I would get a fire attempt about 2 times out of ten and no shutter release ever happened. I searched the net for an answer. There are reports that this model is not compatible with the canon 7dmkii and that a new model is to be released soon. B&H was great with the return.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fabulous product I use the MIOPS camera trigger for almost every feature it has. It took me a while to learn all the functions and how it works but now that I have completed that learning curve the product is outstanding. Have yet to capture lightning but I know it will perform well as I have done test using a flashlight. The HDR function performs extremely well along with this sound and laser function. I have not used it for time lapse nor have I used the DIY. Product is well-built however it does not have the appropriate shutter trigger cable in the box even though their PDF manual says it does. Why the four star rating. I contacted B&H with regard to the missing cable and their customer service said it was not included. I copied and paste the section from the PDF manual that says it does for this specific camera chosen by the purchaser and I was put on hold indefinitely. It's the first time B&H has not come through on their customer service for me I was disappointed. I had to purchase the cable from an outside supplier.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Poor build The unit did not work as-received. On investigation it was found that the battery connectors are very flimsy and did not make contact with the battery contacts. After sticking a few thin pieces of rubber in the battery compartment to force the battery closer to the connectors it finally worked.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such nice (remote) control! I was playing with this thing over the weekend - using the sound activation, the lightning mode (by quickly flashing a light at it) and the laser (a light shining on it that has a shadow passed over is enough to trigger it if sensitivity is turned up). What a fun tool - can trigger the camera, and a flash with a cable. Everything worked perfectly. Looking forward to a thunderstorm to do an actual lightning capture - the main reason I bought it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great! It works as advertised. Bought it primarily to take images of lightning. used it for the first time during a storm a week after I received it and it was able to capture lightning perfectly. The sound and laser features work great as well, though I have not used them as extensively. Just testing. The color scheme and box design needs work, but the menu system is intuitive and the unit works like a charm.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for Special Uses In our busy studio, we're pleased with this little trigger which gives us versatility for some specialized action-stopping shoots. The microphone is a bit small and takes some learning to use, but with some patience we've gotten good results. We'd recommend this for sound triggering if you can get the trigger close to your subject.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Software does not work on Android I have been waiting since June for Miops to update software so that I can use the advanced features. Basic features work, but you could get a different device much cheaper. I really feel like I wasted money on this device.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't work I think my unit is possessed. It triggers all on it's own regardless of what mode it's in. Or it just does nothing at all (again, regardless of what mode it's in) I've tried the Sound mode, which works sometimes but is very inconsistent. Just when I think it's good to go it triggers 5-6 times all on it's own. And yes, I've played around with adjusting the sensitivity. Same problems with the Laser mode. Haven't bothered to try anything else since I mainly bought it for the sound and laser features. I've updated the firmware to the latest version v1.9.4 in the hopes that it would make a difference but no good. I bought this unit so long ago that I don't have my receipt anymore so I guess I'm stuck with it. Must have gotten a lemon. Buyer beware
