Manfrotto MVK504AQ overview

  • 1Description

With its adjustable spring-loaded counter balance system and independently variable pan/tilt fluid drag, Manfrotto's 504HD Fluid Head & MVT535AQ Aluminum Video Tripod Kit is suitable for cameras weighing up to 16.5 pounds. The head mounts on the single tube four section three stage legs, allowing you to use the MVH504HD that comes with the bundle to create smooth camera moves.

The legs by themselves can support a little bit more than 44 pounds and feature a spreaderless design for quick set-up and breakdown. The legs feature tension adjustable flip locks so you can tighten the locks if they should loosen over time. The spiked feet provide grip on soft surfaces, while the spin down spike covers protect delicate surfaces and provide grip on hard or slippery surfaces.

  • 504HD Fluid Video Head

The Manfrotto 504HD Fluid Video Head introduces a revolutionary new design that improves performance while reducing weight, as well as offering a soupçon of style. The head's patented Bridging Technology allows for a wider top plate and longer sliding plate that add stability and balance to a set of state-of-the-art professional features. With its ability to support up to 16.5 lbs, the 504HD can be used with a variety of video and photo cameras. The newly designed counterbalance system includes four presets--from 0 to 16.5 lbs--enabling proper balance no matter what the camera's size or weight.

At the same time, redesigned variable friction components--with clearly marked degree scales and vibration-free movement--bring new levels of fine tuning to your tilts and pans. An illuminated leveling bubble keeps horizons from tilting, even in the dark, while independent disc-brake locks make sure the head stays secure when at rest.

Whether you're using a pro camcorder or a highly accessorized video DSLR on a rod/rail system, the 504HD takes some of the strain off your support rig by providing two 3/8" threads integrated into the sides of the top plate. These Easy Link Connectors allow attachment of monitors, arms, and other accessories directly to the head, making the camera less top-heavy while reducing setup time. All while being oh-so-stylish!

PAN fluid drag system for a more ergonomic operation
Easy Link Connectors for a more flexible accessory attachment
Wider top plate and longer sliding plate for extra stability and balance while using video or photo equipment
More rigid structure for maximum precision and improved responsiveness

  • MVT535AQ Aluminum Tripod Legs with 75mm Bowl

Manfrotto's MVT535AQ Aluminum Tripod Legs with 75mm Bowl combine lightweight aluminum alloy construction with independently locking legs to provide a set of tripod legs that feature a 75mm bowl and support 44 pounds of optional video head and camera. The included 60mm bowl adapter slips into place and is screwed into pre-tapped holes in the 75mm bowl casting. The tripod features a spreaderless design with each leg being able to move independently of the others.

The locking leg angle selections hold each leg in place until you adjust its position, with the flip locks allowing you to independently adjust the height of each leg. The flip locks are adjustable, allowing you to tighten them in order to counteract any slippage or looseness, which is not uncommon with flip locks. The legs incorporate metal spike for extra grip on soft surfaces such as sand, dirt, or rocky terrain. When working on hard, slippery, or delicate surfaces you can spin-down the rubber spike covers for increased grip.

The aluminum construction, and four section/three stage design provides for a strong set of legs, able to support 44 pounds of head and camera, while weighing about seven pounds.
The legs feature independently selectable locking angles of 23, 50, and 70°, providing for strong support and positioning without using a spreader.
The feet incorporate metal spikes, which are most useful on soft surfaces, such as beaches, dirt, or rocky terrain. When working on interiors, hard, or delicate surfaces you can spin-down rubber spike covers which provide extra grip on these surfaces than the metal spikes, and will provide scratch protection to most delicate surfaces.
The flip style leg locks are suitable for quickly loosening, or tightening the legs. An adjustment key attached to the one of the legs, allows you to tighten the locks should they wear over time.

Manfrotto MVK504AQ reviews

504HD Fluid Head & MVT535AQ Aluminum Video Tripod Kit is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Video Head and Tripod Sturdy legs. Very solid and steady base. Lots of options for adjusting height. This is my second 504HD Head. It does the job. Very smooth pan and tilt. You can customize the drag, but don't expect you are going to get the same performance as with a Sachtler. In other words you risk camera flop with too much weight or with faulty balancing before hand. There are videos out there on YouTube where you can see examples of this. I haven't had a problem with it as I have tried to balance and keep the rig under the weight limit. I like Manfrotto stuff. It is not the top in terms of quality, but is reasonably priced and generally their stuff works very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Combo I purchased this for some small video work. My current tripods are all ball heads used mostly for still photography work. The head works great. Customizable controls on the 504HD head allow a lot of flexibility in the feel of movement. It works very smooth and is easy to control. This tripod and head are also excellent for still photography, especially when I am using a heavy lens on my DSLR, There is no sag or settling that sometimes occurs with a typical ballhead. Once I have have the composition locked it in place everything is good to go. Also, this works really well for panos. Similar to video, once the head is leveled, it is very easy to rotate the head without any major fluctuations. So far I am very pleased with this setup. If there was one drawback it would be the weight. The tripod and head are about 13 to 14lbs. But I think it is worth it for the quality of what it delivers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent and solid I ordered this as soon as I saw the flash sale. I have a 502 Head. I don't like the panning and tilting on it very much. This head is much smoother. Now if you're using a DSLR/M or small video camcorder (c100/Fs5/Blackmagic Cinema Camera) you'll be fine. I put a Sony F55 on there with a Canon SLR lens and the panning was doable but I wouldn't rely on it. The sticks are what make this thing quite heavy. If you're traveling I wouldn't use this one. I have lower back issues and I want the Miller Air for travel. It's a bit pricey but it'll be worth it when I can afford it. For now this is quite decent for local jobs or gigs to which you are driving. For Run and Gun (weddings)...nope. That's just me. It loses one star for not having a decent click mechanism for Panning.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Combo, albeit heavy for my uses The 504HD is mostly for DSLR filmmaking or anything of similar weight, but I think it might be overkill. The 502HD is half the weight with nearly all of the same features. Granted it has a lower weight capacity, but you show me a DSLR rig that goes over it's 11 pound capacity and I'll show you a gear crazed over-killer. But you can read the 504HD's head reviews separately, people seem to love it. For my uses, it's just a little too much. The legs are alright, flip lock's are a bit tough to open and close, and the legs stick a bit when collapsing, but this shouldn't be much of an issue considering how this setup was meant to be used. They do get very tall, almost to my ceiling (between 8 to 10 feet). This combo is weird because it's not exactly for run and gun, while not exactly for studio use either. At almost 14 pounds it would be a pain to lug around all day, but is light duty enough to fudge that use. Combining the 504 with some carbon fiber legs would be a lot better. BUT with DSLR filmmaking, why not get a nice pair of photography legs and a 502HD with a flat base? It should be more than strong enough to support your set up, though it would miss the leveling feature of a half ball. (just buy a leveling head?)I got this setup during a deal zone price of $, so hey, I got the 504HD for over $ less than if I paid for it separately plus a free set of $ legs. It's hard to complain. Oh the carrying case is really nice too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic! This is a very sturdy, functional setup. I have used the 504HD head extensively at my full-time job and was comfortable trusting the 504HD as my personal fluid head. The sticks are great! Very strong(a little heavy altogether if you're going to be walking around with your setup). Gives a great range from High to low shots. So far I've had no issues using a very light setup (BMPCC) or a heavier setup(C300 Mark II).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great deal for a great tripod I'd been waiting for a good, affordable fluid head to upgrade my very old Manfrotto and finally found it! This is a professional tripod, meaning it's on the large and heavy side, which is the tradeoff for getting a very sturdy and dependable set of sticks. The head is also removable, which I need to use with my slider. The movement is smooth, the bag it comes with is great. I'm very happy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light and Sturdy I love this tripod it works great for the quick on the fly overseas shoots I work on. It can take some abuse and I love that I have get low to the ground time lapses with how wide the supports spread. It can be a little bit of a pain to get into the case with how tight it is but overall you can beat the price for what you are getting as a whole.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stepping Up I stepped up to the 504HD fluid ball head and aluminum tripod kit from a Manfrotto 501 head with aluminum tripod. This is a big step up. This kit has a load rating over 40 pounds. After using this kit on 3 video shoots, I am impressed. The head can stay attached to the tripod in the included backpack-style case. I can set up the tripod and head in about 2 minutes from the case. It even has a lighted bubble level which came in handy on my last shoot. The included plate is very long which makes leveling a rig very simple. I like to shoot longer shots on my blackmagic cinema camera fitted with an ENG lens. This configuration is very lens-heavy. The 504HD makes it easy to balance without counterweights. There is no fear I will tip over. The tripod is very solid, but also not too heavy to carry. I bought this in preparation for buying a mini URSA camera. It is so nice, that I may need to retire my 501 when I get the camera and buy a second 504 for my B camera.
