Promise Technology Pegasus2 overview

  • 1Description

The 32TB Pegasus2 R8 Thunderbolt 2 RAID Storage Array (7200 rpm) from Promise Technology is a Thunderbolt 2 RAID storage array designed for simultaneous streaming, editing, and backup of high-resolution videos and large multimedia files. This storage array's Thunderbolt 2 interface offers high-speed connectivity. The Pegasus2 R8 stores up to 32TB of data and consists of eight 4TB 7200 rpm SATA drives. Actual storage capacity will differ according to the RAID configuration. These drives are hot-swappable for easy access and come pre-configured in RAID 5 mode, which is optimized for data protection, capacity, and performance. RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60 are also supported; each level offers configuration options for capacity, data protection, redundancy, and speed.

The Pegasus2 R8 storage array has dual Thunderbolt 2 ports, one port for direct system attachment and another port for daisy-chaining up to 6 Thunderbolt 2 devices. This storage is formatted in the HFS+ file system for Mac and is compatible with Time Machine in OS X, which automatically backs up your entire Mac system.

Thunderbolt 2
The Pegasus2's Thunderbolt 2 interface is sufficient for handling and accelerating 3D or 4K (UHD) workflows. Thunderbolt 2 uses the same cable as the previous generation but has double the available bandwidth for a maximum throughput of 20 Gb/s.
4K Workflows
The bandwidth of Thunderbolt 2 and the Pegasus2 is designed to give professionals the ability to edit and view live 4K streams while backing up the same file to a single or daisy-chained Pegasus2 storage array system.

    Promise Technology Pegasus2 reviews

    32TB Pegasus2 R8 Thunderbolt 2 RAID Storage Array (7200 rpm) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor Support and Iffy Components So, lets see - I'm 5 months or so into this 8 drive Pegasus2 unit, used on a new Mac 8 core 3 GHz computer. When this works it is fairly fast. But, I have, so far, had 2 drive failures (Seagate) which had to be replaced under warranty. The unit which was set up for RAID 10, had plenty of redundancy and should have easily and automatically rebuilt itself. It did not! I ended up with a totally corrupted drive that will require total reinitialization. My even bigger problem is the customer service. This situation is a slam-dunk -- send me a new drive. But there are a lot of hoops to jump through and a very complicated and unfriendly web site to navigate. There are techs who are polite but not native English speakers and hard to understand. The email system into the site is hopelessly complicated. Would I use these people and this unit again -- NO! The time and the headaches to keep this going, the rescue of data, the time on the phone, the fact that they make me pay to ship the defective drive back, the fact that they are willing to warranty this only from the build date and not my buy date (for only less than one year!) -- all these things leave a bad taste! But, when it works, it works OK -- so 2 stars instead of one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 32TB Pegasus2 R8 Thunderbolt 2 RAID Before I retired, I was deeply involved with the development of high performance RAID storage systems - so I understand what's going on under the hood... I have the 32TB R8 on a 5K iMAC which is maxed out with memory and CPU. I shoot 4K video and edit it using the CC Pro Adobe applications. The Apps are on the system's 1TB SSD but all data and temporary files are on the R8 that is configured as a single, RAID 5 array. Editing performance is really EXCELLENT - and I wholeheartedly recommend this arrangement to others who demand high performance while editing video. The R8 is very quiet when quiescent, but the 4TB Toshiba drives are quite noisy while seeking. It is not practical to record voiceovers with the microphone anywhere close to the R8 - but that is a very minor criticism. When I need more space, I will definitely buy a second of these units. BTW, it took almost 24 hours for the initial array initialisation, but I was able to use it, although at a somewhat reduced performance, during that time. Pete, January 2016

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but noisy So far so good, performance is great, very happy with it except for head seeking noise. I have a R6 I have had for many years, is completely silent except for the fan running. But now with the R8.. quiet until I start working with it. Seeking noise is very annoying especially for a studio where you need to limit any external sounds. I have contacted the manufacturer about this and will see what we find. I have run tests with Promises utility and they come back fine. I may still end up asking for a replacement to see if that fixes the issue. Absolutely love my R6 has been great. One drive failure after 4 years of use and never lost any files, knock on wood!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 2 drives failed after 1 week After having this for only 1 week 2 of the hard drives failed. Called customer support which is truly, truly abysmal and they said they would replace them but I'd have to pay for a whole new unit and they'd reimburse me for it once it was all fixed. Uhh.. no thanks. B&H is super awesome of course and they took it back immediately and issues a refund! So summary is hard drive bad... B&H good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact, quiet, blazing fast I can only say this RAID array has not let me down in my expectations but exceeded them by far. Straight out of the box and after an initial synchronisation of about 14h this thing just runs like hell. And it is actually more quiet than most of the previous drives I've just (Lacie 2Big, G-Raid Studio). The housing is very solid and the utility software very intuitive and user friendly. I use this array professionally for storing timelapse renders and RAW files as well as rendering directly from it in After Effects. I mainly shoot with Canon 5Dsr cameras with 50MP resoltion. Single RAW files are up to 80MB in size and each of my timelapse shots is anything between 30 to 120GB in size total. I have no issues whatsoever rendering straight from the Promise Raid and can make full use of my Mac Pro and especially the Thunderbolt2 connection. After the render is finished I can watch the shot in 4K ProRes 4444 without any latency. What else could I ask for?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid & Reliable We've used these RAIDs for our editing studio, and they get hammered day-in/day-out with no issues. Never had a drive fail yet, but have swapped out drives each year to create off-site backups. Just bought another 32TB and would highly recommend. Fast & reliable...
