    Nissin I40 reviews

i40 Compact Flash for Sony Cameras with Multi Interface Shoe is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 75.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A compact powerhouse I have been looking for a small flash for my SONY A7r. I have both the small SONY HVL 20 and the larger HVL 43. However, the i40 is small enough to be easily carried, yet is quite powerful. It is useful to use the manual dials to dial in the exact amount of fill flash needed. I have used the flash for a two week trip to India and it performed flawlessly. TTL worked transparently. The only reason for a 4 star rather than a 5 star review is that I believe that the control dials should have been back lit - it is quite difficult to adjust the manual controls in the dark, and one then needs to have another auxiliary light source.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little flash at the price I have used this product for a few weeks on my SLT-77ii camera. So far I am very impressed. The power this little flash generates for its size is amazing. It is only slight larger than the old Minolta 2500 flash (for those that use to have that one) but has a guide number almost as powerful as the Sony HVL-F43M flash. It seems to work perfectly with my SLT-77ii. It works on camera and works off camera wirelessly. The diffuser is a nice addition and saved me finding a Stofen Omnibounce for the flash. the diffuser does color the image somewhat but that is true of most diffusers - shoot in RAW to get around that. Only had it a few weeks, but for the price and size, two thumbs up from me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Capable compact flash A perfect fit for the flashless Sony A7 series. In addition to the snap-on diffuser shown in the product pictures, it also has two built-in options. First, a flip out diffuser that covers the center portion of the flash, and a slide-out reflector to direct some light forward when you have the bounce flash pointed to the ceiling. It also comes with a stand to hold the flash off-shoe for remote triggering, and a soft case to hold all of the above. Runs on 2 AA batteries. A very nice package, especially for the price. I have not used the video-light, frankly I wouldn't expect much as it is low power and only throws a small field of light forward.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just What I Needed I have a Sony A6000 camera and wanted a better flash than the pop-up but not one too big for the camera size. I first bought the Sony HVL-F20M and although much better, after using for a while it still did not have the power or features I desired. After searching for a better solution I found the Nissin i40 in a version with the Sony hot shoe. Here are some of my observations: - Has a lot of power for its size and although not small, its still not too big for my camera. - Does TTL well which means I can put the camera and flash on full auto and my wife can use it for family gatherings, etc. - Love the manual dials but since they are not backlit, memorize how many clicks from the bottom or top the different settings are because the dials can be bumped easily. This is the reason for not giving 5 stars. - I have a bigger LED video light but the built in one comes in handy to fill in close situations. - I can use my Sony HVL-20M flash on the A6000 in wireless mode to trigger the Nissin i40 off camera in both TTL or Manual modes. Adjusting the in camera TTL flash compensation brighter or dimmer also adjusts the i40 off camera as well. Have not tried in bright sunshine yet but works fine indoors. - It does High-Speed Sync with my camera which lets me me shoot up to the max for my camera at 1/4000 sec. (see attached photo @1/1000 sec)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little flash Little is the key word! This flash is much smaller than the comparable units made by Sony, a factor that played largely into my decision to buy it. It's much easier to carry and more discrete attached to my a6000 than the HVL-32 would be. I love the physical dials for manual or TTL control; they're very fast and intuitive. Just a couple of gripes: first, this flash cannot wirelessly trigger another off-camera flash. Only a Sony-branded flash can do that (although I believe that's more a gripe with the a6000 than the flash). Second, the refresh time is a bit longer than I'd like. Overall, I highly recommend this flash! Easy to use, easy to carry.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Most Likely The BEST Choice For A A7RII I typically use these flashes for portrait, indoor poorly lit rooms as well as group shots. I had another copy of this flash with a Panasonic system. The great parts about the Nissin i40 is first of all it's size. It is much smaller than any competition and has higher output. It is such a joy to be able to choose between TTL or manual mode where the controls are right there in front of you and not a ton of button pushes as on other flashes. It's aim is extraordinarily flexible to say the least. It is pretty solid overall but here's the rub and this applies ONLY to the Sony model. Because of the Sony interface the hotshoe is plastic, which REALLY disappointed me. I had another version with a metal hotshoe which was superbly solid all around. This plastic hotshoe has me nervous as I've see several complaints regarding it disintegrating after time. I'm a real careful person but it still has me nervous. Also the flash head seems to have a bit more noise when you move as there is play in it and the base for the flash head is somewhat flexible to be able to move into various positions. More play than I like. But it's the performance I'm after and in that regard the i40 pretty much rules

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I needed I really want to try flash photography. After doing multiple nights of research for my first flash, I was between Sony HVL-F32M and Nissin i40. I wanted something small for my Sony A7 and has features such as TTL and HSS. I settled on the Nissin i40 due the cheaper price and good reviews. I was not disappointed. The size of the flash is perfect for the Sony A7. I used the flash with my Sony A7 to take pictures in a bowling alley. The TTL worked wonderfully and the pictures were exposed correctly. I was surprised to find that the zoom level automatically switched to 24mm when I pulled out the wide angle diffuser. This is my first flash, so I don't know if all flash does that. I cannot be any happier with this purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little flash for Sony This is coming from a Nikon setup using my beloved SB-400 and switching over to a Sony A6000, so most of my points are a comparison to that. Pros: In general, great little flash. 4 AA gives it a lot of power and seems to last a decent amount of time on rechargeables. I love the physical dials, allows for very quick adjustments. Can rotate 180 degrees in both directions, so very versatile (My SB-400 could only bounce upward and not sideways, making portrait bounce shots difficult.) Love the built in bounce card, also has a built in diffuser and sto-fen like diffuser that I don't use. Manual and remote optical trigger works great too. Cons: A bit heavier than SB-400 and can take a few seconds from sleep to be operably, whereas the SB-400 was ready almost instantaneously. Seems a bit cool, but that's probably the camera. Easy fix to tweak the Auto WB a few notches in the amber direction.
