Including the mic, I measured a range of roughly 14-18 inches. I use it for podiums that don't have a built in mic clip. Definitely meant for tabletop situations.

Does this stand work for a shotgun mic?
Probably. Put the heaviest part of the mic above one of the legs. The leg width is great. These probably a one foot...foot print. Hope that helps!
