Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine DS Overview

Utilizing a multi-layer coating process for consistent color rendition from lens to lens the Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine DS Lens answers the challenge of assembling a set of lenses over time. The lens comes in Nikon F Mount and it features industry standard geared focus and iris rings that share common position with other Rokinon Cine DS lenses. To aid focus pullers who have to work both sides of the lens, the aperture and focus scales are marked on both sides of the lens.

This 85mm lens produces a 28.3° angle-of-view when used with a full-frame sensor camera or a 35mm SLR. Hybrid aspherical lenses render sharply defined images with a minimum of distortion and chromatic aberrations, with a minimum focus distance of 3'6" from the lens. A removable lens hood provides flare protection when shooting without a matte box and the lens's threaded front accepts 72mm filter rings.
UMC Lens Coating
Ultra Multi Coated lenses minimize flare and ghosting, and the lenses are color matched to a standard eliminating the need to acquire an entire set of lenses at the same time.
Industry-Standard Gearing
Industry-standard gearing for focus and aperture rings. Each lens in the Rokinon DS series share common focus and iris gear ring positions, which speeds up lens changes as accessories such as follow focus units or iris motors don't have to be re-positioned.
Smooth and Versatile
Declicked aperture ring for smooth iris pulls. A removable lens hood provides flare protection without a matte box.
Fast Aperture
The lens opens up to T1.5, providing the capability for low light shooting or creating extremely shallow depth of field.

question

is it worth getting this version of the m43 Rokinon 85mm t1.5 over the cheaper one ( Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine AS IF UMC Lens )? Is there a noticeable improvement in image quality? (I would need this for both video and stills head & shoulders portraits)..thanks for any feedback
Asked by: Justin
Side by side, I would think that the image quality would be about the same. The more expensive DS or Dual Side lens line has features that come into play when you have a set of them. You get the Dual Side focus markings, unified aperture and focus gear ring distance, (simplifying lens changes) and color matching. If you do not intend to get a DS set and plan more casual use, then save some money and get the less expensive one. If you plan more intensive video use then spend the money, get a set of DS lenses and enjoy the benefits.

There is not, but that is because this is a Cinema Style Lens which is fully manual for focus. It does not have any auto focus capability.

question

I've heard using full frame lenses on m4/3 sensors can result in an unsharp image. I know the I know there are versions of this lens that are full frame... but has this been made specifically for m4/3 (GH4)?
Asked by: Anonymous
Full frame camera lenses, with the appropriate adapters, work perfectly on MFT sensor cameras. In this case Samyang, the maker of Rokinon lenses, makes basic lenses that are assembled into bodies meant for any number of particular lens mounts. Since these basic lenses they use cover full frame, they easily cover MFT. In any event, for all intents and purposes this can be considered a lens built for MFT camera's such as the GH4.

No, it initially uses Micro 4/3 lenses because it is a 4/3 sensor. But if you purchase an EF mount adapter it will work. so Get a Micro 4/3 to EF Mount
