Yamaha A-S801 overview

  • 1Description

Expand your listening horizons with the black A-S801 Integrated Amplifier from Yamaha. Featuring up to 120W per channel of RMS power at 6 ohms, this amp is equipped with digital inputs for connecting devices like televisions and Blu-ray/DVD players. The A-S801 sports a USB input and a 32-bit ESS Sabre Premier Audio digital-to-analog converter for playing DSD and PCM files stored on your PC. This amplifier offers dual stereo outputs, giving you the ability to power two sets of speakers in different rooms and switch between them, or have them both playing at the same time. To increase the bass output of your sound system, there's also a terminal for connecting a subwoofer.

To reduce distortion and degradation and produce the cleanest possible sound, the A-S801 employs Pure Direct mode and CD Direct mode. Activated via buttons on the front of the unit, these modes cause input signals to bypass unused circuits and cuts off those circuits' power supply. To further ensure quality sound, the amplifier's continuously variable loudness control allows you to balance low and high frequency sounds so you can hear a full tonal range at any volume.

Built to be energy efficient, the amp uses a power management system to switch itself to idle mode when not in use. The A-S801's internal circuitry mirrors itself symmetrically to produce higher signal purity and lower degradation. The chassis is reinforced with a solid center bar to reduce vibration and features a brushed aluminum front panel and knobs. The system comes with a remote control for easy operation.

32-Bit USB Digital-to-Analog Converter
The USB-connected ESS Sabre Premier Audio Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) supports native 32-bit PCM and DSD resolutions on Windows PCs (24-bit on Mac), allowing for a direct connection to computer-based high-resolution audio files. The USB device controller has its own master clock that eliminates PC jitter, and the USB driver is designed for low loss and high throughput. A 2-channel D/A converter is housed inside the chip which applies a double differential operation. During playback, indicators on the front panel show which sampling frequencies are currently being used.
Digital Audio Input
The A-S801 is equipped for digital audio inputs with an optical and digital coaxial input terminal. The optical is for receiving audio from a TV and the coaxial for receiving audio from a DVD/Blu-ray player. These inputs eliminate the need for conversion from digital audio to analog out, thus maintaining signal quality.
CD Direct Mode
Engaged by a front panel switch, it matches CD signal levels so each stage produces less noise, resulting in improved signal-to-noise ratio and maintenance of the amp's total gain balance.
Pure Direct Mode
The Pure Direct mode causes the music signals to travel the shortest possible circuit route, bypassing the buffer amp and the tone, loudness and balance controls to virtually eliminate any signal degradation for the purest sound quality.
Continuously Variable Loudness Control
The A-S801 features an analog loudness control on the front panel which lets you adjust the loudness effect as desired. Separate from the overall volume, this controls the balance of the low- and high-frequency sounds, providing full tonal range at any volume level, compensating for the natural loss in the human ear of high and low frequencies at soft levels.
Direct Symmetrical Design
This amplifier's left and right channels are organized in a straight, symmetrical layout for limiting distortion and increasing signal purity.
Anti-Resonance Chassis
The base of the A-S801's chassis is reinforced with a solid center bar to increase rigidity support and vibration damping, which limits resonance.
Dual System Capable
You can connect two separate speaker systems in different rooms and switch between them or have them both play at the same time by switching the dial on the front of the unit.
Gold-Plated Terminals
The A-S801 has gold-plated speaker and input terminals, which ensure a high quality connection and reduce signal loss.
Phono MM Terminal
You can connect a turntable with an MM phono cartridge to play vinyl records, allowing you to enjoy records in addition to modern media sources.
Auto Power Standby Function
This amplifier puts itself into standby mode when it detects that it hasn't been used in approximately 8 hours, minimizing power consumption.
Remote Control
Control your music from afar with the included remote, finished to match the design of the amplifier. The remote comes with batteries and can also be used to control a Yamaha CD player.
Connection for Bluetooth Wireless Adapter
With the optional YBA-11 Bluetooth Wireless Adapter, you'll be able to stream music wirelessly from a Bluetooth capable mobile phone or a PC to the network receiver. This amplifier features a DC-out connection on the rear panel to power the adapter.
Rotary Encoder Input Selector
The rotary encoder makes it quick and easy to select input sources, and the LEDs clearly show which source is selected so you can easily switch between them, even in a dark room.

    Yamaha A-S801 reviews

A-S801 Integrated Amplifier (Black) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Crisp Sound After watching the review from Audioholics, I knew I was buying the best amp. This is an integrated amplifier...meaning it has a preamp and power amp in the same unit. There is no tuner (receiver). You can connect a turntable, tuner, and CD. It also has an optical and coax inputs but the coolest thing is the USB input. I ran a 20 ft USB cable to my Mac. There are instructions to download and install a USB driver which was easy. So here's the cool part. You change the sound preferences in your computer to the newly installed USB driver. On the Yamaha, press the Pure Direct button. Back on your computer, fire up iTunes and enjoy. This USB/Pure Direct configuration bypasses the computers sound card and plays the music as the sound engineer intended. I have the sample rate for the USB drive set to 48kHz (via the Audio MIDI) which is the most common frequency used by sound engineers. The Yamaha supports two sets of speakers. I have four beefy JBL's connected with a big Polk sub-woofer. The sound is crystal clear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A-S801 Yamaha Integrated Amplifier I recently upgraded my amp from an internet-ready amp to this Yamaha A-S801 and I couldn't be happier. This Yamaha is a very simple 2-channel stereo amp but it delivers the music back to the artists' intention to give the audiences the pleasure of listening their music collection over and over again. The previous internet-ready amp (before this Yamaha A-S801 amp) was purchased to replace a 20 year old JVC 100 watts amp (a great amp but decided to retired after 20 years of service), I bought an 85 watts amp with a lot of features, but it does not deliver the quality of the music that I am looking for, I don't like to turn on the volume loud to hear my music, but I have to turn the volume up on this 85 watts amp and yet it does not deliver the clarity of the music that I wanted to hear. This Yamaha A-S801 amp certainly delivers and I am glad that I did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great amp with great looks I have it hooked up to a pair of Energy RC-70s. Provides all the power they'll ever need. It has no problem getting the volume up. I normally set it at 30% volume. Any more than 40% and I'll go deaf. Classic looks with easy controls. Excellent build quality. I use a Macbook Pro and the Yamaha CD S300 as sources. Best amp to start your 2 channel system on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Integrated Amp Hooked up to a pair of Klipsch RP-280F speakers and a Cambridge Audio CXC CD transport (the A-S801 has a built in DAC). Very nice sounding, plenty of power. I've always preferred knobs over buttons for volume, tone controls, and input selection. The only thing I would have liked would have been VU meters, like on the higher end Yamahas. Glad it came in silver, it's a nice looking piece of gear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome for the buck. Hook this up to a pair of Yamaha 777 speaker ($ cheap). Use bi wiring with low impedance setting on amp. Spin vinyl in pure direct mode. May get a Yamaha subwoofer to match piano black finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Giant Killer! An incredibly powerful amp! Drives my B&W 704 S2s effortlessly! Weighs like a tank, thick power cord.
