Yamaha A-S701 Overview

Expand your listening horizons with the silver A-S701 Integrated Amplifier from Yamaha. Featuring up to 120W per channel of RMS power at 6 ohms, this amp is equipped with digital inputs for connecting devices like televisions and Blu-ray/DVD players. It offers dual stereo outputs, giving you the ability to power two sets of speakers in different rooms and switch between them, or have them both playing at the same time. To increase the bass output of your sound system, there's also a terminal for connecting a subwoofer.

To reduce distortion and degradation and produce the cleanest possible sound, the A-S701 employs Pure Direct mode and CD Direct mode. Activated via buttons on the front of the unit, these modes cause input signals to bypass unused circuits and cuts off those circuits' power supply. To further ensure quality sound, the amplifier's continuously variable loudness control allows you to balance low and high frequency sounds so you can hear a full tonal range at any volume.

Built to be energy efficient, the amp uses a power management system to switch itself to idle mode when not in use. The A-S701's internal circuitry mirrors itself symmetrically to produce higher signal purity and lower degradation. The chassis is reinforced with a solid center bar to reduce vibration and features a brushed aluminum front panel and knobs. The system comes with a remote control for easy operation.

CD Direct Mode
Engaged by a front panel switch, it matches CD signal levels so each stage produces less noise, resulting in improved signal-to-noise ratio and maintenance of the amp's total gain balance.
Pure Direct Mode
The Pure Direct mode causes the music signals to travel the shortest possible circuit route, bypassing the buffer amp and the tone, loudness and balance controls to virtually eliminate any signal degradation for the purest sound quality.
Continuously Variable Loudness Control
The A-S701 features an analog loudness control on the front panel which lets you adjust the loudness effect as desired. Separate from the overall volume, this controls the balance of the low- and high-frequency sounds, providing full tonal range at any volume level, compensating for the natural loss in the human ear of high and low frequencies at soft levels.
Direct Symmetrical Design
This amplifier's left and right channels are organized in a straight, symmetrical layout for limiting distortion and increasing signal purity.
Anti-Resonance Chassis
The base of the A-S701's chassis is reinforced with a solid center bar to increase rigidity support and vibration damping, which limits resonance.
Dual System Capable
You can connect two separate speaker systems in different rooms and switch between them or have them both play at the same time by switching the dial on the front of the unit.
Phono MM Terminal
You can connect a turntable with an MM phono cartridge to play vinyl records, allowing you to enjoy records in addition to modern media sources.
Auto Power Standby Function
This amplifier puts itself into standby mode when it detects that it hasn't been used in approximately 8 hours, minimizing power consumption.
Remote Control
Control your music from afar with the included remote, finished to match the design of the amplifier. The remote comes with batteries and can also be used to control a Yamaha CD player.
Connection for Bluetooth Wireless Adapter
With the optional YBA-11 Bluetooth Wireless Adapter, you'll be able to stream music wirelessly from a Bluetooth capable mobile phone or a PC to the network receiver. This amplifier features a DC-out connection on the rear panel to power the adapter.
Rotary Encoder Input Selector
The rotary encoder makes it quick and easy to select input sources, and the LEDs clearly show which source is selected so you can easily switch between them, even in a dark room.

Yamaha A-S701 Reviews

Yamaha A-S701 fantastic!

I was looking to replace a mid 70s Yamaha receiver with something newer. Searched for a long time, reading articles and reviews. I did not want wifi, streaming, or bluetooth. I wanted something that could be repaired if needed, clean power and a bunch of it! The tone of the 701 sounds very similar to my old receiver, but has more punch and more power. It does not struggle running 4 Pioneer floor speakers with 12 woofers, especially at high volume! I mainly use it for vinyl, which the on board phono does quite well. I have not used the DAC so I can't comment. I have used the line input to play music from my home theater receiver and it sounds fine. I have also used the sub out, works! Clean power, fantastic sound, simple functions, solid, repairable. Hard to find something else in this price range (especially when it is on sale) with low distortion, 100w x2 at 8 ohm, 4 ohm compatible, 2 sets of speaker outs. Plus I'm a fan of the vintage silver! Buy it, you won't regret it!

A good performer with sloppy design.

There’s a lot to like with this model. As a performer, this integrated amp is classic Yamaha. Internally it’s smartly engineered, has slightly above average parts quality, is robust, meets the published specs on my test bench, and drives all of my speakers, regardless of load. In fact, it drives with clean and clear aplomb what I call “my humiliators,” a pair of Philharmonic Audio monitors, which have made a mockery of lesser amps with a combo 4 Ohm/82dB/1W/1M (in)efficiency rating. With the A-S701 I can make my eyes squint, hitting 98dB at 9 feet, and with much more in its tank. The basic operational elements, like the oversized rectangular adjustment knobs, are a welcome throwback to the days of yore. The metal Volume knob turns with a decent amount of drag, but lacks one scintilla of tactile feedback. I also appreciate the CD DIRECT AMP and PURE DIRECT push button options, which eliminate the tone controls. There is an audible difference in sound quality when either of these are activated. The Subwoofer output is a nice addition, but there’s no way to adjust the crossover frequency. The speaker connectors are heavy enough to handle 12-gauge wire. There are ample Analog (RCA) and Digital input options. And the Remote also controls my Yamaha CD player. No Bluetooth, though. No ethernet. No streaming connection. And no HDMI.  Speaking of digital connections, the onboard DAC works well. None of its measured shortcomings are anywhere close to the range of human audibility. As much as there is to like, there’s plenty to dislike. Three omissions grind my gears: First, the lack of a lighted level indicator on the volume knob. I have the silver model, and the faint hash mark on the knob doesn’t have enough contrast to be visible beyond 6 feet.  Second is Yamaha’s design team leaving off VU meters. This omission leaves 1/3rd of the front panel completely blank, which, in turn, makes the front panel look unfinished, like the front of a Tesla. Dear Yamaha, would it have sent your consumer electronics division into bankruptcy to provide VU meters and a lighted volume indicator? And before you point your crooked corporate fingers at the lighted meters on the ridiculously overpriced $3,500+ models, just know that we know that VU meters are cheap add ons that could very easily been fitted on this model without sending your share prices into a death spiral. My third gripe concerns the Remote. Yes, it controls a Yamaha CD player, but it has no number buttons for selecting tracks. For crying out loud, Yamaha, it’s 9 inches long and the bottom portion of it is blank real estate! And it’s not backlit, either. So, there you have it. The A-S701 is a good performer with truly sloppy design choices. And that’s one user’s experience. Do with it what you will.

Is this essentially the same unit as the S801, but without the DAC/USB?
Asked by: Bobby
That is correct. The DAC supports a higher bit rate and DSD.
