Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 Overview

The Fujifilm X mount Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens is a prime standard-angle lens designed for APS-C sized sensors. Providing a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 52.5mm, this lens is well-suited to working in a variety of situations ranging from landscape to portraiture. Its fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is further beneficial to working in low-light conditions and for greater control over selective focus and shallow depth of field effects.

Two high refractive index elements and one aspherical element have been incorporated into the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations in order to produce sharper images. A UMC coating has also been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for improved light transmission and more contrast-rich imagery.

Standard-length, 52.5mm equivalent prime lens provides a similar field of view to normal vision, making it well-suited to use in everyday situations.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and provides greater control over focus placement for shallow depth of field applications.
Two high refractive index elements and one aspherical element reduce chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and clarity.
UMC coating improves light transmission and suppresses lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich, color-neutral images.
Eight rounded aperture blades help to produce an aesthetic out-of-focus quality to benefit selective focus and shallow depth of field imagery.

Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 Reviews

So far, so good

I purchased this lens less than a month ago and haven't used it in the field yet (ruggedness question) which is the reason for only 4 stars. In indoor tests, however, it rates a big 5 stars. Build is good, feel is good--really smooth focusing even with one finger as others have stated. Enables very precise manual focusing since focus ring rotates through almost 180 stop-to-stop; stops are solid, not mushy. And it has a depth of field scale. The lens is on the heavy side for a prime, however. This is due to the amount of glass in it--12 elements in 10 groups. That likely accounts for its truly outstanding performance. It is a terrific buy for the price, especially for an f/1.4. Sharp through the entire exposure range, almost can't tell the difference wide open to f/22. Bokeh is very good. I also don't see the softness at the corners that some have remarked about. Exposure can be set by the camera thanks to the AE chip. Being a manual focus lens, it doesn't auto-focus but it does confirm focus in the viewfinder (and in live view). The images below were taken using a Nikon D810; shutter was 1/200s, ISO 800, lighting was via two 45 Impact white umbrellas, with a Nikon SB-900 flash in one and a Nikon SB-700 in the other. Distance to the subject (a potted plant) was approx. 3 feet and focus was on the center of the flower. Exposures were taken at f/1.4, f/8, and f/22. Exposure was boosted in post for the f/8 and the f/22 shots, along with some noise reduction. Depth of field is very shallow but the focus point is there if you look for it.

question

Will my 7D auto. Set exposure with this lens?
Asked by: arthur
No, it would not. The Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens for Canon EF (AE Chip), B&H # RO3514CAE, would be required for use if autoexposure is needed.

question

Is there a difference between the glass of the AE chip equipped lens and the fully manual lens?
Asked by: Kenneth G.
There is no difference in the glass optics of the lenses. The only difference is the Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens for Canon EF (AE Chip) incorporates an AE microprocessor that enables the camera to electronically confirm focus as well as permit camera-based control over exposure settings.
