Canon 24mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by a truly thin profile, along with an advanced autofocus motor, the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens from Canon is a wide-angle prime designed for APS-C-size EOS DSLRs. Providing a 38mm-equivalent focal length, this lens takes on a slightly wider-than-normal perspective to benefit its use in a broad variety of shooting situations. A stepping motor AF system pairs well with cameras featuring the Movie Servo AF mode, where it will deliver fast, smooth, and nearly silent focusing performance that can instantly be manually overridden at any time. When coupled with a sophisticated optical design, this slim, lightweight, and versatile lens is an ideal take-everywhere option.

One aspherical element is incorporated within the lens' construction, which helps to minimize chromatic aberrations and produce imagery with notable sharpness and clarity. Optimized lens coatings further benefit performance by reducing lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity. Additionally, similar to the STM AF system, the aperture mechanism is based on a micro-stepping motor to maintain overall quietness during operation.

Compact wide-angle prime is designed specifically for use with APS-C-sized sensors, and will provide a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 38mm.
An STM stepping motor is incorporated into the lens' design to provide quick, smooth, and near silent autofocus performance. Additionally, this focusing mechanism also pairs well with EOS cameras featuring the Movie Servo AF mode to enable continuous focusing performance when working in live view.
Converse to the AF system, full-time manual focus override is possible when in One Shot AF mode for critical fine-tuning of focus placement.
One aspherical element is incorporated within the lens' design to minimize chromatic aberrations and distortions from edge-to-edge.
Optimized lens coatings and design help to suppress lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and clarity.
A micro-stepping mechanism is employed to deliver near silent aperture adjustment.
A nearly circular seven-bladed diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality when utilizing selective focus techniques.
Slim-profiled lens, measuring less than 1"-thick, is an ideal everyday lens for a wide variety of shooting applications.

Canon 24mm f/2.8 reviews

EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 380.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from great for the $$$$$ This is a great little lens if you are aware of its limitations. I bought it for under the net @ high school basketball games (aps-c sensor). I can move around at these games. When I shoot college I still need the versatility of my 16-35 zoom because I am stuck in one place. I shoot a lot more HS than college, so it was worth the investment, especially since I got an already affordable lens at a on sale price. Another thing I like is the close focusing distance. I used it @ Christmas with a flash @ f/5.6 and the images were great. Even sharp @ f/2.8 as my sample image shows. Only downside is not usable on full frame.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very cost effective! I am a purely amateur T3i user with, I have been told by professionals, a good sense of composition. I do not usually take portraits, but instead snap sunsets, landscapes, architecture, flowers, birds, etc. I bought this lens to save both weight and money. Have used it extensively now for three months and am very pleased. NO - no comparison to an L lens, but for casuals like myself? I have no need to spend on aspects that are really pretty irrelevant. The pancake 24mm has consistently produced, although since I do not shoot video I cannot comment on those aspects. My bottom line? I am about to cruise the Baltic and am taking only two lenses - the 24mm and the 40mm pancake.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Okay, but the 50mm STM is lightening fast I had the 50mm STM and sold it because the 50mm was too narrow for indoor use. You had to be a good distance away from the subject to get a good framing. Overall, the 50mm focused SUPER FAST! and the bokeh was incredible. The 24mm gives a wider field of view and it's easier to get closer to a subject vs. trying get get further away, but it seems so slow to focus. Low light still performance is okay. The image quality is good, but it just takes a long time to get focused. Maybe this will be a good lens for action video. I'm guessing like all lenses, it will be just fine in bright light. I guess the verdict is still out. What could I be doing wrong?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very sharp, lightweight pancake lens This is a great lens to walk around with on my 80D. I love how much lighter my camera is without a bulky zoom lens attached. The wide field of view is great (essentially the same as the 40mm pancake on a 5D). I did some tests to compare sharpness between this lens, my Canon 18-135 STM and Canon 17-55 2.8. It's noticeably sharper than both lenses, even at the edges. Granted there's no IS and it's not as fast as my 50mm 1.8, but if I want to walk around and take pictures without a heavy zoom lens on my camera, this lens wins out every time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens The Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lens is a moderately low-cost, great-performing wide-angle lens. It is very small, and it make practically no noise when focusing. I use this lens with a Canon EOS T6s body, and it works beautifullytypical of Canon excellence. I do a lot of close-up work with this lens, and it is well-suited for this purpose. It is very sharp with virtually no distortion. It is also ideal for video images, and it works especially well with the silent focus operation, tracking a subject nearly perfectly. Canon's engineering leadership and expertise is clearly evident in the design of this fine lens, and it is an outstanding general-purpose lens to be used with Canon's EOS cameras, and it is highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Carry-Around Lens This is a great fit on any Canon APS-C body. F/2.8 is nice but stopping down to F/5.6 to F/8 really brings out the sharpness on this lens. Great for general video work, studio shots, landscapes, and more. For video specifically, minor focal adjustments are silent but more dramatic changes can be picked up by the onboard mic, I suggest running external audio which should be used anyways. Yes, there are several better 24mm primes, but none will rival the low price and high value ratio on this one. Slip it in your pocket to carry along for every shoot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for fun without compromising quality! Wanted a lens that I wouldn't need to worry about damaging for my cheap DSLR (Canon SL1) and this one fits the bill! I normally shoot on a full frame camera (5D Mark ii) and found that my preferred focal range is 35mm. On a crop sensor camera this acts as a 38mm (full frame equivalent) lens. It is a relatively fast lens, very low profile, sharp pictures, fast autofocus and so far the auto focus has been pretty spot on (although not perfect). So for this price I'd recommend it and just in general it is a fun lens to use. Great for hobby, travel and being discreet. If you are doing anything professional I would not use this, but I feel that goes without saying.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great APS-C prime lens This is not my first prime lens, but I wish it were. I started with the nifty-fifty (Canon 50mm f/1.8 II), and found the FOV and the autofocus to be a bit unforgiving with my Canon T3i. After using this lens for several weeks, I've found it to be a lot more versatile than the 50mm for general uses (although the 50mm is still a much better portrait lens). I have it on my camera for about 80% of the time now, and it completely supplanted the kit lens (EFS 18-55mm), which I never did use much. It's a very sharp lens, even more so if you stop it down to around f/3.5.
