Sony 28-135mm overview

  • 1Description

Designed to satisfy 4K production requirements, the Sony FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 G OSS Lens is a wide-ranging zoom lens that covers wide-angle to telephoto perspectives while adding many features for your full-frame, APS-C, or E-mount camcorder or still photography camera system. The lens features a powered zoom control with a variable speed and zoom rotation direction reversal capability. Powering the zoom function is an SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) drive that allows precision and quiet operation. Focus noise is also minimized through weight reduction of the focus element group and use of a linear motor. Iris function is also designed to be smooth and silent for cinematography demands.

Angle of view variations while focusing (breathing) and axial displacement while zooming have been reduced while five aspherical elements and three ED elements work with advanced multi-coating technology to minimize distortion and chromatic aberrations while also contributing to sharper overall imagery with enhanced contrast and clarity.

Independent control rings for zoom, focus, and iris (aperture) are provided for and the focus mode can be switched from auto to manual by sliding the focus ring forward so control is maintained at all times. All three control rings have been engineered to provide the right amount of torque for comfortable, responsive operation and the pitch of the scalloping on the rings has been designed for comfortable, slip-free control.

A constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and is especially beneficial when working with greater zoom magnifications in low-light conditions. Also benefiting working in dim light or at the long end of the zoom range is Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, which works to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps.

Powered 8-speed zoom provides a 28-135mm focal length range, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives
Power zoom designed for cinema productions and full frame cameras
Features Sony's original Nano AR Coating technology designed to effectively suppress reflections that can cause flare and ghosting. The precisely defined regular nano-structure allows accurate light transmission, contributing to high-quality images, even more so than lenses with coatings that use an irregular nano-structure
Three control rings (for zoom, focus, iris) offer manual control for demanding large format productions. The focus mode can be switched from auto to manual simply by sliding the focus ring forward so control is maintained at all times. Zoom speed can be precisely controlled over a wide range, with zoom rotation direction reversal capability. All three control rings have been engineered to provide ideal torque for comfortable, responsive operation. Even the pitch of the scalloping on the rings has been designed for comfortable, slip-free control
Sony's advanced iris control and linear AF motor drive system achieve quiet focusing that is also extremely responsive. Part of the reason that focus control is so quiet is that original Sony linear motors are contactless, with no gears or mechanical coupling to generate noise
The world's first SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) drive in a cinema lens for quiet zoom and smooth iris control
Maintains plane of focus while zooming and maintains field of view while focusing (important for video)
Delivers smooth tracking throughout the zoom range at any speed and eliminates any axial image shifting. Zooming is quiet as well as responsive thanks to advanced mechanical actuator design
Features an optical design and control technology inherited from Sony's professional camcorders that ensure no breathing while focusing
Constant f/4 maximum aperture enables greater consistency throughout the zoom range and benefits working in dim conditions with longer focal lengths
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization works to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps to benefit shooting handheld in dim lighting and with greater zoom magnifications
Three extra-low dispersion elements and five aspherical elements helps to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range while also contributing to overall image sharpness and clarity

    Sony 28-135mm reviews

FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 G OSS Lens is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 39.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from DONT' BREAK THE MOUNT! BUYER BEWARE! We owned 3 of these lenses, unfortunately, in the real world of film making, sometimes equipement break. 2 of our 28-135mm mount broke (one was dropped by accident and the other one broke during transport) Sony Services center won't offer any repairs claiming that the technology used in the lens won't allow such a simple piece to be repaired. Both lenses still work perfectly but the 4 screws that hold the mount to the lens are broken. AND THIS CAN'T BE REPAIRED according to Sony. In the end, if you break such a simple piece, you need to buy a brand new lens even if it's still working perfectly fine. Buyer beware!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Video Lens for A7s First, I want to thank all those negative reviews. I picked up a mint returned copy for a reduced price. This stought/compact lens is a beauty and easily outperforms the 28-70 Nikkor that is almost as big and heavy with an adapter. The controls are located and work very well. Switches replace A7s menu items. Although this lens AutoFocuses exceptionally well on a FS7, I believe it was designed for the FullFrame A7s where it is more than wide enough for my use. I really like the feature where you pull back on the focus ring to lock it into manual focus if needed while shooting.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from My Least Used Lens It's somewhat ironic that my most expensive lens (this one) is actually the one I use the least. Why? 1. It's large and heavy, so inconvenient to lug around 2. 28mm is not wide enough on short end, and in the middle ranges, I think some of my other lenses look better. 3. There just haven't been many situations (yet) where I needing anything over, say 70mm. It's not a terrible lens. I do like lenses with autofocus, so that you can push to focus to get a nice, quick, accurate focus. I just think that in hindsight I probably would have used the money for something else, knowing what I know now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value hybrid cinematic lens For those who will be using the Sony 28-135mm Lens, most will find it great. The power zoom is awesome, especially for those who have only been using photography lenses. As is, the zoom is ok. You CAN creep the zoom, by buying the remote control VCT-VPR1 (and throw away the flimsy tripod it comes with), and for some reason, the zoom is quicker when operated from this particular remote (there is a switch on the remote to enable/disable slow speed). The lens is sharp with little ghosting. Continuous auto focus when paired with A7S. Zoom and focus are servo motor driven, thus crash zoom is not available. Would ideally suit hobbyist, Wedding, Corporate, Music videos etc Auto focus is quick, although hunting can be somewhat frustrating at times.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Unacceptably Slow Zoom It's a great concept for a lens, but on my FS7 the zoom is unusable. After you release the zoom rocker, it continues zooming for nearly a full second!! Using the ring or controller on the lens itself, the lens responds better but still operates at 25% the speed of a true servo zoom that I typically using when shooting reality TV. The lens feels sturdy and smooth but in a true run and gun environment it won't cut it in my book. This lens may be a better companion on a full frame camera vs a S35 sensor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic video lens for the a7s I'm surprised the first few reviews for this lens aren't good. This lens is awesome if you've been using photography lenses for the last 5 years. Also, if you pair it with an a7s, you get basically a 28-200 zoom range. The guy who said it's not sharp is just plain wrong. It's very sharp. The stabilization is great, the focus ring has a great feel with a long throw, and having a de-clicked aperture ring is great too. If you want to see me demonstrate the lens, you can view my review here: ----------------------------

Rated 1 out of 5 by from weak mount Like others, I take serious issue with the quality of the mount. It easily broke off. Sony does not repair this. They also charge $135 to tell you they won't repair it. At least other manufacturers modify their standard mounts for these heavier setups. I'm beyond angry with Sony.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile and utilitarian for video This lens is sharp across the frame, manual zoom is quick enough for crash zoom effects, and stabilization when attached to an 7S or S II body is rock solid. Coming from the other E mount lenses, I found the size and weight intimidating at first but soon I learned to appreciate the added stability, controls, even fly by the wire focus, which is slightly delayed, and the end effect is worth it. Bokeh is not harsh, although not buttery smooth either. For transport, I only carry and tripod the lens by the tripod collar and have had no mount stability or strength issues as others have mentioned. I would not simply hang a three pound lens off the front of a camera without support. Overall, a wonderful video and stills tool in my bag. I see no softness in 4K mode or otherwise, and it compliments my other primes nicely.
