Sony 16-35mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

A compact and weather-resistant option, the Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens from Sony will satisfy nearly all the wide-angle needs of full-frame E-mount shooters. It also features a constant f/4 aperture for consistent performance and illumination throughout the zoom range. Ensuring optimal image quality, the lens design incorporates five aspherical elements, including one Advanced Aspherical (AA), three extra-low dispersion elements, and the Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating. This combination delivers images that are free from aberrations and flare.

For smooth operation, the lens uses a linear autofocus motor and an internal focusing design. Also, it is equipped with Optical SteadyShot to dramatically reduce the effects of camera shake on your images. Additionally, it has a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth, rounded bokeh.

Based on the Zeiss Tessar optical concept, this lens uses a design with 12 elements in ten groups that helps ensure a smaller overall lens size along with reduced flaring, distortion, and chromatic aberrations.
Covering ultra-wide to wide-angle perspectives, this compact 16-35mm will pair nicely with Sony's full-frame E-mount cameras. It can also be used on APS-C format cameras where it will provide a 24-52.5mm equivalent zoom range.
A constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also lends greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field techniques.
Zeiss T* anti-reflective coatings have been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections in order to provide greater image clarity, contrast, and color fidelity.
Three extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Five aspherical elements, including one large-diameter Advanced Aspherical (AA) element, are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
A linear autofocus motor and internal focus design provide quick and precise autofocus performance and enables accurate and silent focusing while recording videos.
Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

    Sony 16-35mm f/4.0 reviews

    Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 93.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Than Expected This lens has surpassed my expectations. Beautiful color rendition. A must for landscapes. Using Capture 1 Express for Sony, it is the easiest lens I have dealt with to work challenging skies etc. Solidly built. The weight and balance with my A7II is just fine. There is an informative and positive article of this lens on the Lens Rentals website. I encourage reading it. At 16 mm it does very well. The quality, as well as detail of the images are to my complete satisfaction. C1 Express does not automatically correct for distortion. Very easy to correct though. If you shoot JPEG, the in camera engine will correct it for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great landscape and travel lens When I made the switch from the Canon 5DIII to the Sony A7RII a year ago, I purchased a Metabones Mark IV adapter to use my Canon 17-40 f/4 L. I love this wide lens for landscapes and as you rarely shoot a landscape with a fast aperture, it was a great lens. I started doing research on image quality and became convinced that switching to native Sony glass and this lens in particular would give me a sharper image corner to corner. The 17-40 was definitely soft at the edges. After a couple weeks of testing, I made the right choice and sold my Canon lens and the Metabones adapter. The FE 16-35 is going to be my primary travel lens when I can only take one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Than Expected This lens surpassed my expectations. A must for landscapes. It is much better optically than the F 4/ 24-70 and in C1 Express for Sony it is far easier to work difficult skies. Beautiful color rendition. There is an informative and positive article on the Lens Rentals website. At 16 mm it does very well. The size is also fine. Remember to correct distortion in post as it does not do so automatically. If you shoot JPEG, the in camera engine corrects it for you. Yes, I recommend this lens. Good light. Sergio

Rated 5 out of 5 by from YES, I would recommend this to a friend... I got the 16-35 Vario Tessar after returning a 25mm Batis. I was uncomfortable with the Batis--and the 25mm was limiting. There was threshold acceptable spherical distortion--i.e. barrel/pincushion. The 16-35 is really excellent--with less spherical issue than the Batis and the super-wide really offers interesting possibilities otherwise impossible to realize. So far I have only used it indoors, shooting between ISO 800 and 1600, with excellent to very good results--with the A7Rii. A faster lens would be nice but it would get too huge and heavy; at 18 ounces the 16-35 is already pretty hefty...but if you are careful not to shoot at too slow a speed, the in-body stabilization really is a blessing. All things considered, I am very happy that I returned the Batis and got the 16-35.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow. I'm simply stunned by how beautifully this works in conjunction with the A7s. I bought it mostly for the property and neighborhood videos that our company produces but the stills are also simply staggering. I am a full blown addict of the image stabilization piece of these lenses and with this, the 24-70, and the 70-200 I feel like I can do anything. Then I'll turn on the APS part of the sensor (there doesn't seem to be any degradation of the image in stills or especially video) and the lenses all add another 30% to their respective focal lengths. Just amazing. A must for Sony A7 owners.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best of its kind. I'm excited when sony announced this lens and I got mine last week. The size complements well to any a7 camera. It is a bit bigger compared to the FE 24-70mm ans smaller than 35mm F1.4. Optically the lens produces a very nice color rendition that looks like a 3D effect a typical of a Zeiss lens. Some of the reviews said that wide open at 16, there are softness in the corner which I don't really notice. Together with other sony-Zeiss lenses, this one also built in metal with plastic lenshood. This lens is perfect for landscape photography. Together with my 24-70 this is a perfect travel companion. I used the Canon and Nikon counter part of this lens and could say that this lens outshine those 2 lenses. Price wise, bit expensive than of canon/nikon but its worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The missing piece! I ended up at in the Sony A7R camp coming from Canon. Simply put, this lens is every bit as good as my best Canon zoom, the EF 24-70 ll f/2.8 at 24, 28 & 35mm. At 16mm the Zeiss is even better, quite an achievement. Comparing the Zeiss to my old Canon 16-35, well there is no companion. Nice job Sony! The FE 4/16-35 is extremely well corrected for point sources at f/4, in other words, at f/4 it looks beautiful for night skies.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Resolution & Focussing. Definitely an A grade lens ( my grade for Sony FE lenses, A+ for 55mm, C for 35mm, D+ for 24-70, B+ for 70-200). Excellent resolution & focussing accuracy at all focal lengths, with minor fall off near 35mm. Better than comparable Leica lenses from 16-24 mm. The only negative is the slight pin-cushion distortion at 35mm that is easily corrected in Post or in camera with JPEG's. It has equal resolution compared to my Zeiss 18mm F 3.5 ZE, but much better CA and coma correction.
