Sony HVL-F32M Overview

Compact, yet packed of features, the HVL-F32M External Flash from Sony is well-suited for use on mirrorless cameras as well as smaller DSLRs, or for those who are simply looking for a lightweight on-camera lighting solution. The flash balances power and size with a respectable guide number of 105' at ISO 100 and 105mm as well as an auto zoom range of 24-105mm on full-frame cameras, expandable to 15mm with the built-in wide-angle panel. Also, unit can tilt upward 90° as well as rotate 180° right and 90° left for bouncing light in horizontal and vertical shooting positions.

Another benefit of the flash is the ability to use it as either a wireless TTL controller or as a remote flash. This allows users to set up multiple flash units around their subject for more complex lighting setups. The HVL-F32M also has a comprehensive LCD panel on the back for viewing and changing settings as well as a charge progress indicator. Dust and water resistance is also a major feature of this unit along with high-speed, slow, first and second curtain synchronization settings. Additionally, it has a recycle time of 0.1 to 5 seconds and runs on 2 AA batteries. It comes with a terminal protector cap, mini-stand, and carrying case.

This unit is compatible with Sony's Multi Interface Shoe and is not natively compatible with the older Sony/Minolta Auto-Lock Accessory Shoe. Though, with the use of ADP-AMA Shoe Adapter, Sony cameras with the Auto-Lock Accessory Shoe can be adapted to use Multi Interface Shoe external flashes with full compatibility.

Advance Distance Integration (ADI) flash metering works with cameras and lenses with distance encoders to more accurately balance flash output with ambient light and subject reflectivity by taking camera-to-subject distance into account
Continuous flash performance of 40 flashes at 5 Hz with normal flash at 1/32 power and the 105mm setting
Built-in bounce card for creating catchlights
Auto zoom function will recognize and adjust for sensor size

Sony HVL-F32M Reviews

What is needed when in trouble.

I purchased the Sony HLV-F32M as backup Flash, or better put "In Case Of Emergency" flashgun. It is very a easily flash, but is Very Difficult to control the exposure unless you have your Sony camera set up for Studio use. I my opinion it is the Sony Camera, it is designed for existing light. Almost all the pictures I take are for with existing light, however, I have taken pictures indoors of people, at a wedding for example, where you may need a flash. This Sony flash will be good for such emergencies. You can use the defuser supplied and/or the bounce reflector for such times. It is a good thing to have when you need it: powerful enough while being quick and easy to flash. To illustrate this I took some pictures indoors on a cloudy day, see attached.

Yes and still working after 2 years. Not as powerful with many options as other flashes but it does get the job done. I think the rotation at 90degrees is sufficient for me. The only downside is that this eats a lot of batteries.

Perfect size and power

This well-built little gem is small and lightweight but powerful. Perfect fit for my Sony mirrorless camera I bought from B&H. I don't use a flash very often but wanted to step up my game a bit with options. This flash is not as complicated a display as others so the imitimidation level not overwhelming!

Excellent Flash!

question

Can this flash HVLf32M, or the Hvlf43am be used to trigger the Minolta 5600hs flash unit? thanks for your help.
Asked by: Kelly H.
Technically a Sony flash that is infrared and a master can control the Minolta 5600 HS off camera. It is very old so chances are there are many options not available and most likely will only work in manual.

question

I have a HVL-F20M as a controller and an HVL-F32M as a slave. Is it possible to add a second HVL-F32M or a higher guide number flash as a second save when the HVL-F20M is the controller?
Asked by: Nicholas
As long as the extra flashes you plan to add to your setup are compatible with Sony's wireless flash system and the flash's sensor can see the flash pulse output from the on-camera HVL-F20M controller, yes, you may use multiple off-camera flashes simultaneously for wireless usage with one HVL-F20M as a commander flash.

question

Will the Sony HVL-F32M External Flash work with the Sony NEX-5 camera?
Asked by: Frank R.
Unfortunately, this flash is not compatible with the Sony NEX 5. The Sony NEX 5 was compatible with the now discontinued Sony HVL-F20S flash which connected via the Smart Accessory terminal on the camera.
