Sony HVL-F32M overview

  • 1Description

Compact, yet packed of features, the HVL-F32M External Flash from Sony is well-suited for use on mirrorless cameras as well as smaller DSLRs, or for those who are simply looking for a lightweight on-camera lighting solution. The flash balances power and size with a respectable guide number of 105' at ISO 100 and 105mm as well as an auto zoom range of 24-105mm on full-frame cameras, expandable to 15mm with the built-in wide-angle panel. Also, unit can tilt upward 90° as well as rotate 180° right and 90° left for bouncing light in horizontal and vertical shooting positions.

Another benefit of the flash is the ability to use it as either a wireless TTL controller or as a remote flash. This allows users to set up multiple flash units around their subject for more complex lighting setups. The HVL-F32M also has a comprehensive LCD panel on the back for viewing and changing settings as well as a charge progress indicator. Dust and water resistance is also a major feature of this unit along with high-speed, slow, first and second curtain synchronization settings. Additionally, it has a recycle time of 0.1 to 5 seconds and runs on 2 AA batteries. It comes with a terminal protector cap, mini-stand, and carrying case.

This unit is compatible with Sony's Multi Interface Shoe and is not natively compatible with the older Sony/Minolta Auto-Lock Accessory Shoe. Though, with the use of ADP-AMA Shoe Adapter, Sony cameras with the Auto-Lock Accessory Shoe can be adapted to use Multi Interface Shoe external flashes with full compatibility.

Advance Distance Integration (ADI) flash metering works with cameras and lenses with distance encoders to more accurately balance flash output with ambient light and subject reflectivity by taking camera-to-subject distance into account
Continuous flash performance of 40 flashes at 5 Hz with normal flash at 1/32 power and the 105mm setting
Built-in bounce card for creating catchlights
Auto zoom function will recognize and adjust for sensor size
Color temperature of approximately 5500K
Wireless channel is fixed to channel 1
Power saving mode
Charge progress indicator switches from red, orange, yellow, and green to show current status
Manual flash control from 1/1 to 1/128 power in 1/3 EV steps

    Sony HVL-F32M reviews

HVL-F32M External Flash is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 42.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Designed to match the Sony A7 line I was not going to purchase a flash because of my interest in natural lighting. But, this flash is designed to complement the Sony A 7 system. At first I thought something was missing, including an instruction booklet with better explanations, but once you work out the interface with the camera you can make all the adjustments in-camera. I use it primarily as a fill-in which enables me to achieve a consistent light balance at high ISOs. It is compact and light, which is consistent with the standards of the A 7 system. I use it with a Gary Fong collapsible lightsphere. I wanted a backup to cover a wide variety of lighting conditions, and this unit gives me confidence I will not blow an assignment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfectly Though I have been a hobbyist photographer for decades, I have never used a real flash before. I just slid this on the camera, turned it on, and it worked great. i am easily able to bounce it off ceiling, wall etc. This makes my indoor shots of my new baby so much better than before. On my A77ii, i had to shoot at 3200 iso in my dark living room, and it was noisy and still dark. Now, at 1/125 it's shooting at 800 ISO and is nice and bright. Made a world of difference. It automatically turns on and off with my camera's on/off switch which is nice. Its a very light unit that takes two batteries and comes with a nice case as well.I am so happy to have discovered the world of using on camera flashes, as it makes low light photography so much easier.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice light output but fragile foot, and few controls After years of shooting with Nikon DSLRs I have been transitioning to Sony A7 and A6000 cameras. This flash has a nice output, pleasant with the reflector. Gripe is that unlike with Nikon flashes (and also an inexpensive Meike / Neewer Mk320 for Sony) it seems you can not compensate the flash output on the fly in TTL mode with the + / - buttons. They seem to work only in Manual mode. I like to use the camera exposure compensation just for the ambient light. Too bad. I wonder why Sony did not implement that. Other issue is that the flash foot is fragile. a light drop and a plastic tab broke. spare part itself is 25% of the price of the flash, and repair by some independent authorized center is almost half the price of the flash. A flash at this price should have a all metal foot, like Nikon speedlights that sell for a similar amount. It could be a great portable flash, but it seems that Sony misses certain important details in their cameras and accessories. If the price was half it would not be a big deal/

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great flash. Great flash. Good power/size trade off and lakes for a natural looking fit on the A7. In short performs as expected and is as or more consistent that any flash I owned over three systems (Olymnpus, Nikon, and Samsung).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect flash for a7, except one thing.. The size of the flash is great. It's compact, yet bright and easy to control. I love that they stuck with AA batteries. My one gripe is that I cannot override the zoom of the flash beam. I prefer a narrow flash beam with a wide angle lens for wedding receptions and I cannot do this without adding a grid or some other external modifier. Maybe Sony could add this feature in a firmware update.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect match for A7 A great companion to a Sony A7M2. This strobe fits the bill with it's compact size. I used it recently while traveling to Hawaii for a friend's wedding. It proved effective indoors when paired with a Lightsphere to act as a fill during daytime and at night with dim lighting. I found it charged fairly quickly. It uses 2AA batteries which saves space but sacrifices battery life. With standard Duracell alkalines I found myself changing batteries often. I'd recommend using with lithium batteries.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice match for Sony A6000 I was looking for a flash that would have more reach and features than the HVL-F20M, but not be too top heavy on the A6000. The F32M fits the bill. For the power and features, I think the price is fair. Was pleased to see you can bounce and swivel. When wanting to travel light (one of the reasons for having an A6000), the F32M may get left behind. Would love to see an option almost as powerful, but shorter and lighter. Haven't had a chance to use it a lot, but so far pleased with coverage and exposure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not inexpensive but good value If you want easy interoperability with Sony cameras, value simplicity, and value the smaller body of this product, this is the flash for you. If not, maybe check out some other products. This flash is pricy for this modest power and feature set, but offers a simple value proposition: good build, wireless TTL (within the Sony ecosystem), bounce/pan/tilt, and a small package.
