Movcam MOV-303-2200 Overview

The Movcam Cage Kit for Sony a7S provides the added protection, stability, and mounting options needed to get your a7S camera ready from video production use. The kit consists of a form-fitting camera cage with top handle, a riser block, and an LWS 15mm rod baseplate. All of the kit components are machined from aluminum for strength and durability.

The cage leaves access open to vital video recording functions and ports, including the multi-interface shoe. 1/4"-20 threaded holes along the top and sides of the cage are provided for attaching camera accessories. The top of the cage features a removable top handle, providing a convenient means of carrying your carry rig, while providing additional threaded accessory holes and an integrated cold shoe. A second cold shoe is found on top of the camera grip-side of the cage.

At the bottom of the cage is a rail for sliding on/off the included riser block. The riser block attaches the camera to the LWS 15mm rod support baseplate, while elevating the camera to the proper lens height for use with optional rod-based accessories such as a matte box or follow focus. The baseplate features ports for adding optional 15mm rods and is compatible with Movcam's Universal LWS Baseplate System.

Solid but Not Perfect

For context: I use my Sony A7s for personal photography stuff (family, friends, keep it in my bag everywhere I go). And then maybe once a month for video work. But when I say video work, I mean a solid 2-3 days of shooting commercial work. The first thing I noticed is it was well packed and feels & looks premium. Which it is. Then I quickly went to disassembling it to stick my camera in it. That's when I realized how much of a pain this will be for me to prep my camera each time I want to cage it. Probably a 5 min process, which isn't horrible, but makes me think, How important is it for this pick-up shot that I cage this thing. Once I had it assembled around the camera (which is exactly what you do - don't think for a second you can slip or wedge your camera into this thing) I found it to be a really nice and tight fit. Love that. And it feels good holding the camera like a camera, as opposed to carrying a cage around. I put the top handle on and then quickly found that, even without a lens attached, you're not going to be sitting the cage down standing up, because the footprint is so shallow that it barely stands. In fact, it doesn't stand upright with the handle attached. That's probably my main gripe, as I set my camera down a lot on my cart when changing lenses, re-rigging, etc. But install a couple 6 rails and it'll lay nicely on those. Also, while the handle is attached to a small rail system, it still requires a flathead screwdriver to take it off. Would be nice if that had a thumbscrew or something instead. Other than that, this cage is performing well and really offers everything I'd want in a cage while in use. I find the base block that holds the rails to be a little block-ish and odd to use, but it works. I can tell you that if they'd thicken the bottom of the cage and throw an arca-compatible dovetail on it, I'd probably never take my camera out. All-in-all, I like the product and give it 4 stars. Would give it 5 if it had a more stable bottom-side to stand on.

Looks great, feels great, but then again it's not Arri stuff. The very first time I put it on my new A7s the bottom screw would not bite. Crummy

What's the distance between the 1/4 threaded holes (center-center)? is there usually a standard for that distance? thanks

I would guess that it is about 3/8th's of an inch. No, there is no known video standard. It is probably a machinist standard however.

Yes, the MI shoe adapter of the Sony UWP-D27 2-Person Camera-Mount Wireless Lavalier Microphone Kit with MI Shoe Adapter (UC14: 470 to 542 MHz), BH #SOUWPD2714CK (B&H Kit), can mount to the Movcam Cage Kit for Sony a7S's cold shoe mount on the top handle, but it will not support the transmission of audio through the shoe mount.

No. Returned mine in time. Opted for the Zacuto Half Cage which is not model specific and can adapt to any future camera coming out, and offers more adjustments with their Recoil base plate system for shoulder balance.
