Panasonic DMC-LX100 overview

  • 1Description

The black Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 Digital Camera is an advanced Four Thirds format point-and-shoot with manual controls designed to enable and inspire creativity. It features a large multi-aspect 4/3" type MOS sensor to produce 12.8MP still images (4:3) and 4K Ultra HD video at 30 and 24 fps. You also have the ability to extract high-resolution 8MP images from the 4K video, letting you capture entire scenes without missing a shot.

The built-in Leica DC Vario-Summilux zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-75mm, covering wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives. With a fast maximum aperture of f/1.7-2.8, the lens lets you work in lower light situations and provides selective focus control for shallow depth of field imagery, enhanced by a nine-bladed aperture for smooth out-of-focus rendering. When more light is needed, the camera features an integrated hot shoe, letting you use external flash units. A compact flash unit is included with the camera, matching the style and color of the body, and providing a GN of 23' (7m) at ISO 100.

The lightweight, compact body features both an electronic viewfinder and a rear LCD screen. The high-density 2,764k-dot viewfinder lets you confidently frame your shots, even in bright outdoor environments. Delivering approximately 100% of the Adobe RGB color space, the viewfinder accurately reproduces hues, so you know what you see is what you're capturing. The rear 3.0" screen is also available, with a 921k-dot resolution. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC allows remote camera control and image sharing from linked mobile devices using the Panasonic Image App.

4/3" Type MOS Sensor
The LX100 features a 4/3"-sized MOS image sensor - similar in size to the sensors found in Panasonic's interchangeable lens mirrorless Micro Four Thirds cameras. The high-sensitivity sensor features a multi-aspect sensor with 16.8MP total resolution, enabling you to use more height or width of the sensor, depending on the aspect ratio you're shooting in. Additionally, by maintaining an effective resolution of 12.8MP (in 4:3 mode), the volume of light is controlled to improve the S/N ratio for clearer, detailed imaged with reduced noise, even when shooting at ISO 25600.
Multiple Aspect Ratios
To take advantage of the multi-aspect sensor, a switch on the lens barrel lets you quickly switch between 4:3, 3:2, or 16:9 aspect ratios without having to scroll through menus.
Manual Controls
The LX100 is designed to inspire creativity by offering a full range of manual controls and advanced imaging features. Dedicated lens rings give you intuitive control of aperture, zoom, while dials on the top of the camera give you easy access to shutter speed and exposure compensation.
24-75mm Leica DC Vario-Summilux f/1.7-2.8 Lens
The built-in Leica DC Vario-Summilux lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-75mm, covering wide-angle to portrait length perspectives to suit working in a wide variety of shooting conditions. An f/1.7-2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low light conditions throughout the entire zoom range and enables greater control over focus placement for shallow depth of field imagery. Five aspherical elements, including two ED lenses, are incorporated into the lens design to minimize chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range to benefit creating sharp, clear imagery.
Light Speed AF with DFD Technology
Light Speed AF, a contrast-detection AF system, uses Depth from Defocus technology to greatly reduce focus time. It instantly calculates distance to subject by evaluating two separate images with different sharpness levels. The result is a high-speed AF in approximately 0.14 seconds.
High-Resolution EVF
The integrated 2764k-dot resolution viewfinder lets you frame and capture shots even in bright sunlight. Based on the Adobe RGB color space, the viewfinder faithfully reproduces the primary colors for more true-to-life hues, allowing you to accurate judge the colors of your scene. And to prevent missing any shooting opportunity, the Eye Sensor AF can be set to initiate auto focusing the instant you look into it.
4K UHD and Full HD Video Recording
Take advantage of 4K Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 video recording at 30 or 24 fps in MP4 format. 4K video can be recorded for up to 15 minutes, and requires an SD card rated at UHS-I Speed Class 3. The camera also records Full HD 1080p video at 60 or 30 fps in MP4 or AVCHD formats.
Grab High-Resolutions Stills from 4K Video
The LX100 has the ability to use the 4K video as a high-speed burst shooting mode, letting you extract 8MP resolution stills from the footage. This yields images with enough resolution to enlarge and print high-quality photos. Once 4K photo mode is selected, the luminance level is adjusted to 0-255. At the same time, you can select 4:3 or 3:2, in addition to 16:9 with the aspect ratio switch.
In addition to tradition exposure bracketing, the camera can also bracket images with different aspect ratios (4:3, 3:2, 16:9, and 1:1), white balance parameters, and monochrome photo styles.
Creative Control with 22 Filter Effects
Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Monochrome, Dynamic Monochrome, Rough Monochrome, Silky Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Toy Pop, Bleach Bypass, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Fantasy, Star Filter, One Point Color, Sunshine

Note: Available effects vary depending on shooting mode
External Flash Included
When extra light is needed, take advantage of the camera's integrated hot shoe with the included external flash unit. The flash features a guide number of 23' (7 m) at ISO 100.
Wireless Connectivity
Built-in Wi-Fi lets you use the Panasonic Image App on your mobile device to set focus and shoot photos and videos remotely. You can then instantly upload and share images to social media sites, as well as tag location information to the image using the GPS log on your smartphone or tablet. NFC support lets you instantly sync an NFC-compatible smartphone or tablet simply by touching it to the camera. You can also scan the QR code displayed on the camera monitor to sync.

    Panasonic DMC-LX100 reviews

Lumix DMC-LX100 Digital Camera (Black) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 203.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great street camera This is nearest camera to a 60's Leica that I have found. Considering its small size it's great to handle - with a nice little finger grip. The good top mounted controls for shutter and compensation and an aperture ring are really retro but superbly ergonomic and functional. Image quality is decent through mid range ISO setting but then falls off. Lens is fast to focus and bright. The digital view finder pixelates but is fine - better than display in most light conditions. The photo format selection is nice feature - and you can bracket them. It is a discrete camera - nice for candid work. It makes you want to carry it - so more photos !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Leave the DSLR at home I have had this camera for about a month and shot lots of stills with it and some 4k video. what impresses me the most is the beautiful shallow depth of field you're able to capture with the lens. also, in Grand Panasonic tradition, it crushes the blacks. you get wonderful chunky contrast and lots of depth. focus is super fast so even with action shots it will fire off singles as fast as you can push the button. I also like that it's small enough to fit in a purse or small pack and carry around with you easily. it is a little big to fit in a pocket but not so big that you will not want to carry it. so far I think it really excels at taking close-up portraits.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great camera! At first I ordered the new Panasonic GX850 but returned it after finding that the camera wasn't for me. The GX850 is certainly tiny, but I had a difficult time handling it without accidently changing settings by bumping buttons or items on the touchscreen. Now I have the LX100. I like its simplicity. It's a keeper! I would trade the EVF for a built-in flash though. I carry my LX100 on my hiking fanny pack belt, and I found just the right bag for it - the Lowepro 8x12cm lens case (B&H # LOLP36978). The LX100 fits in it just right. You'll have to carry the LX100's flash until in another place though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great images, some negatives too As a photography teacher, I love the smooth stills and sharp video. It's a powerful but complicated camera that might confuse and frustrate beginners unless they go full-auto and stay there. The LX-100 is laid out like a classic 1950s film camera, with analog-looking dials and rings. Pros: fast and sharp lens, natural and neutral colors, oodles of actually useful features such as time lapse video. Cons : old-timey film-style controls will confuse younger or inexperienced users; highlights are clipped, even in RAW format; in 4k video, autofocus causes flicker and shimmer; 12mp resolution won't allow for much cropping or enlarging of pictures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great buy I use this camera all the time since it is so small it can fit in my hand bag during the day so I am ready at all times. It is so light so I can just keep it without even thinking that I am lugging a camera around. What is great is the dials are super easy to change to manual. There are not a whole lot of complicated menus to have to go through. Even in low light the images help ud up nicely. It is a much higher end model then the snappy camera so it is great since I was able to quickly switch to shooting Raw files. I had this happen when I needed to do some more heavier images and it was a very quick change for me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice complement to your full system I bought this as a quick camera to take with me, rather than my full system camera (the Fuji stuff). I am enjoying it. The shots are sharp, framed properly the 12MP effective is more than enough, the camera is relatively easy to use once you familiarize yourself with the menus. It's very nice to have the 4K video, and I've been shooting more video than I thought I would. The purple highglights are definitely an issue if you're shooting strong backlit photos. The focus is VERY fast, and I'm getting way more great shots of my kids than ever before. My Fuji will remain my go-to camera if I'm looking for spectacular shots, but for everyday shooting, this has been perfect.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from top Compact Camera This is a good camera to have in the bag, you can use all the days, to shoot photos when you are not around with the big professional cameras. This is one of the best Compact Camera in this moment, great image quality. It's not so simple to understand the menu, for me that use the Nikon d4s, but it's simple at the end shoot good photos during an holiday travel, or all the time that you want, street photos are great. I would love to have more wide angle and more zoom in this camera, but the lens it's good. It's a little expensive, but if you want a compact camera with you this is a good solution

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Magical Camera I did a user review on my web site (MirrorlessJourney) with a lot of photos and videos shot in real life with this camera. I love it. The AF is fast and precise. The bokeh is sublime with a very summilux style. The image and video quality are awesome. The battery lasts longer than in my GX7.The only thing missing is a tilting touch screen. It would have been nice. The zoom is slow to go from the wide to the tele focal lenght (about 3 seconds). It has some ugly lens flare in some conditions.Overall, it is an awesome camera with a lot more pros than cons.
