Celestron NexStar 8SE 203mm f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain GoTo Telescope

Representing the largest aperture in the series and drawing in more light to see deeper into space than smaller versions, Celestron's NexStar 8SE 203mm f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain GoTo Telescope is a powerful yet portable scope that can be used for observing everything from the Moon and planets to deep-sky objects like stars, galaxies, and nebulae, while maintaining the user-friendly interface of the SE series. Using Celestron's proprietary StarBright XLT multi-coating system, light transmission is increased throughout the entire optical path with anti-reflection multi-coated lenses, highly reflective multi-coated mirrors, and crown optical glass elements. While the focal ratio is a relatively slow f/10, the mount's precision tracking system allows it to be a competent shorter-exposure astrophotography imaging platform for the Moon and planets.

Driving the dual servo motors on the mount is the brain of the NexStar 8SE: The iconic NexStar+ computer hand controller. Packed with 40,000+ celestial objects, it can hold up to 100 additional user-defined destinations and is updatable via the Celestron website. It has multiple alignment procedures to get you observing fast, including the super-easy SkyAlign system. Capable of being used in the northern or southern hemispheres, the NexStar has sidereal, lunar, and solar tracking speeds to accurately follow near and deep-sky objects, plus nine slew speeds and the ability to automatically trigger a camera's shutter release for Fastar or piggyback wide-field photography or conventional prime-focus astrophotography.

Celestron UHC (Ultra High Contrast) LPR Filter (1.25") - Reduces Transmission of Wavelengths of Artificially-Produced Light

LPR (light pollution reduction) filters are designed to selectively reduce transmission of certain wavelengths of light, specifically those produced by artificial light.  These include mercury vapor, high & low pressure sodium vapor lights and the unwanted natural light caused by neutral oxygen emissions in our atmosphere.  The UHC LPR filter has improved contrast over the typical broadband filters, giving darker background skies and noticeably improved contrast of emission nebulae.  The advanced coatings enable and impressive 97% total transmission across the entire bandpass, with total blockage of prominent light pollution lines.  It is a perfect filter for viewing nebula from light polluted skies as well as for boosting the contrast of nebula from dark sky sites.

Multilayer, plasma-assisted and Ionbeam hardened dielectric coatings yield supreme durability

Celestron 8SE Reviews

WOW!

Our second telescope. First one was a WOW also, 25 years ago. the primary Mirror finally got cloudy. The NextStar so far is A WOW! Everybody says Holy #*#* there first look! We have a long way to go with this scope. We will be learning how to improve using it for a while. I will be enlisting some help from our local Astronomy Club, as i did 25 years ago. Was a little concerned with some damage to the packaging, then realized it was double and triple boxed in some boxes. No damage to anything. Assembled easily, and setup went quick for that first look the same night we received it. Ordering from B&H was as easy as it gets, great guidance from the associate for the Imager we got to go with it.

Mix of Useful and Not so Useful Stuff

The observation kit includes a number of filters that I've not tried yet, but assume they are fine, a power tank, and a wifi adapter. The power tank is great! It includes a bright white light, a red light for preserving night vision, and plenty of options for powering telescopes and accessories. It feels really solid and well made! The observation kit also includes a wifi module that is incredibly frustrating in that it drops connections, usually immediately after going through the telescope alignment process. It drops connection with my android phone and also with my laptop computer. That's really disappointing because the aps seem like they would be useful if they had a reliable connection to the telescope.

Disappointed

Was really disappointed with this purchase. Nothing but frustration. Navigation does not work. Spending most of my time aligning only to have the telescope navigate to nothing. On my third day waiting for Celestron to respond. Should have gone with a different brand.

Great deception, a failure...

Buying this item has been a source a great deception. Indeed, as from the beginning, the wifi dongle which comes along and the gps system I had purchased as an option did not work. Contacted celestron and they sent me new items which worked, then I bought a starsense to ease the alignment process and it started with communication error. It got changed by celestron. Now it's the telescope motor which is not working properly. the sidereal speed is off and there is a slew issue which makes the motor to slide quickly in any direction randomly. Have to send it to celestron for repair. Had never seen such issues from a brand new item. This is a joke... So buyers, stay away from this makes which is nothing more than a cheap chinese gadget. Better to invest into Meade or Williams Optics or even sky watchers for serious astronomy.

Simply excellent!

This is my first telescope and I'm not disappointed. I wanted to get the capabilities of a top-end telescope without breaking the bank. This combo gives most all of what you need to have fun and expand into a great hobby. I am happy with the decision not to spend $400 or $4,000 as I was pondering. This hits the spot. Very happy with this combo and the help from B&H.

WOW! Well worth the wait!

The Celestron NexStar 8SE has been referred to as a High End beginner telescope. If it is, I can't imagine what a Low End advanced telescope would be. My wait to receive this was well worth it. Don't expect to see images like you do that NASA publishes with it, you won't. But, there are processing apps available to do that. I feel fortunate that I only had to wait almost 4 weeks to receive it. I started out with the Celestron PowerSeeker 127 EQ, and within 3 weeks, I ordered the 8SE. The PowerSeeker is awesome, but not designed to take photos with. I did my research on the 8SE, YouTube being the primary source. There are plenty of opinions available on telescopes. I'd suggest you exercise due diligence and do as much research before you purchase a telescope. I decided since I would be spending a lot of money on the telescope and accessories, my purchase would be a Bucket List buy. The kit B&H offered was a good deal, for $50 more, you get $300 worth of accessories. I've spent a great deal more on other accessories, and don't regret it. This is an expensive hobby, but, what worthwhile hobby isn't? This is by no means a buy and drive telescope for an amateur. It will take several hours to become familiar with all the functions on the telescope. The owner's manual is not real clear, and is in desperate need of more clarity and update. YouTube videos help out a great deal with this. I am still learning all the functions. The assembly and set up is easy. Make sure the leg with Celestron on it points north and is level before aligning it. The hand controller is in dire need of improvement. The display screen has to be held at an angle so you can read it. The words run together while scrolling and are difficult to read. The smooth exterior of it makes it hard to hold without slipping. It does not fit tightly into it's holder. The power cord is way to short. I broke mine while turning the mount to slew towards Jupiter. The owner's manual is poorly lacking in clarity, as well as it is in dire need of being updated. Here again, YouTube videos are a great help. It needs to be aligned every time you use it. The alignment process can become very tedious if the conditions are not right. NOW, the good stuff. The 8 Schmidt-Cassegrain Optical Tube Assembly is one fine instrument. I've found it to be good for stargazing, planetary viewing and photography, and deep space viewing and photography as well. I'm not a photographer nor an astronomer, but this telescope makes it easy. More accessories to buy, but, you'll be glad you did! The mount is heavily built and easy to adjust. I would definitely buy a dew shield for it. Nothing more frustrating than the lens or eyepiece fogging up while you're enjoying the solar system. The power tank is a must have for me. I can take the telescope out in the country, and power the telescope without any issues. The SkyPortal WIFI module is temperamental, and I'm still learning it. Once I master it, I feel it will be an integral part of my setup. I've purchased the following accessories, spent a whole bunch of money doing so, but, it's scratched off my Bucket List, and my wife and I are enjoying the heck out of it when the weather cooperates! We can't wait to share it with our grandkids and neighbors after the COVID is finally controlled. 2 Celestron Barlow lens 2 Celestron XLT Diagonal Mirror Celestron 8-24mm zoom eyepiece Celestron Focus Motor Celestron Wedge Celestron f/6.3 reducer Celestron 8 Solar filter Power Adapter with 10' cord Assorted 1.25 and 2 lenses and filters Celestron absorber pads Celestron hand warmers I am, as you can see, a firm believer in Celestron products. The quality overall, is of the highest. With the exceptions of the things I've noted, those improvements would make it exceptional. Celestron's reputation is one of the finest in the industry. Their customer support is far superior than others. Now, a word about B&H customer service. Being the impatient man I am, I called B&H once a week inquiring about my order status and questions about accessories I was going to buy. B&H's customer service is unequivocally the finest available. The reps are friendly, knowledgeable, and more than willing and happy to answer your questions. They are also one of the fastest companies to ship your orders!

This is a great scope for the price. If you are new to astronomy or have a scope and are moving up you won't be disapointed. This kit is well worth the price , it only costs about 50 dollars more than the scope alone and you get about 300 dollars worth of accessories, well worth athe price. I highly recomend this scope and accessory kit.
