LED Light Cube LLC-150 Overview

  • 1Description

The LED Light Cube from IC12 is a unique 4x4x4" battery-powered Fresnel light source capable of delivering constant 5,600K daylight-balanced light in video mode or flash with accurate, consistent color temperature from a single LED source. While that's a significant feat, the Light Cube's level of output control of both flash and constant light modes is what makes it notable.

The Cube's push button LCD back panel allows power variation from 1/1 to 1/128 power, with negligible color shift. The continuous light mode is highly symbiotic with the flash mode, in fact it does double duty as a modeling light that shuts down when the unit is firing at flash durations from a 1 second "paint with strobe" speed to an action freezing 1/8,000 sec. at bursts up to 15 frames per second. This wide flash duration range is available regardless of the power level in use.

The LED Light Cube is powered by an internal, removable and highly stable lithium polymer battery that gets up to 45 minutes full power run time in constant video mode, up to 800 full power flashes in flash mode and 3,000 pops at minimum power. The included multi-voltage charger tops up a depleted battery in 2-3 hours.

Finally, besides these impressive attributes, the LED Light Cube is stackable. You can easily go from 300 to 600 to 1,200W by simply adding cubes to form a lightbank. The Cube's in/out ports allow you to daisy chain them together in a Master/Slave configuration and control them all from one unit triggered by a hard-wired or radio equipped camera.

Flash and continuous light control, multi-unit flexibility and a wide range of user-selectable flash durations are all bundled in a 4 x 4 x 4", 1.65 lb package that gives you a myriad of creative choices. You just need to add the inspiration.

Continuous High Speed Flash at Full Power
By drawing from advanced LED technologies, the LED Light Cube not only outputs a superior quality light but there is no recycle time between flashes. No matter how high you make your power settings, the Cube fires continuously, accommodating state-of-the-art cameras shooting at high-speed bursts of 15 frames per second
Adjustable Flash Speed
Despite its small size, The LED Light Cube offers the photographer impressive control over the light output, previously only possible with high-end studio lights. The Cube can freeze action at speeds of up to 1/8,000 sec., which means stopping the action of an athlete, the wing flap of a bird or splashing water
Ultra High Performance Internal Battery
The secret to the Cube's portability is Lithium-ion polymer battery technology, chosen for the highest possible battery performance in the smallest of sizes. The LED Light Cube can fire off over 800 flashes at full power from a 2-3 hour charge. The internal battery makes the Cube a good choice for clandestine filmmaking and photography requiring fast set-ups or for shooting in confined spaces
Interlocking Capability
Upgrade by adding more Cubes to create large studio light banks. Double the Cubes, double the power. Easily go from 300 to 600 to 1,200W of power by simply adding on Cubes. Based on a Master/Slave function, the first unit in your Cube chain controls the settings of all the other units
All-in-One Flash and Video Lighting
The Cube uses an LED rather than a filament lamp, so it can easily double as a video light as well as a flash, which is particularly handy given the current proliferation of DSLR cameras shooting digital video

    LED Light Cube LLC-150 Reviews

LED Light Cube is rated 2.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Under powered, color unpleasant yellow. I really wanted to like this unit as I love the size and it's built in power source. The price tag is a bit high, but when factoring the cost of a speed light and an external battery pack it comes out cheaper... that said, it's not all it's cracked up to be yet. It's advertised as being close to the same power as a speed light and after visiting their table at PDN I thought that that was an understatement from their demos. My intention was to use this as I do a speed light for portraits and illuminating background at events (dark reception halls, etc) Upon my initial tests though I quickly discovered the power to be significantly less than my 600EXRTs and even my Olympus FL-600R's. Worse off is the yellowish color it puts out. WB corrections, gels, etc... nothing I tried helped. I also feel like I lost power way too fast compared to the claim of 25K flashes... I took maybe 150-200 trying to decide on this and charged it twice... I like this enough to give it another try if down the road they address these issues.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Caution- Color and heat can be a problem I intended to use this flash in conjunction with conventional strobe equipment for architectual interior photography. Color is not consistent with conventional flash, at least as tested in my work flow. I did a bench test against Dynalite at 125 watts, 7' from W-Rite ColorChecker then balanced the results in Capture One. Initially I got inconsistent results that I will chalk up to the Cube being new and never brought up to high temp, which in itself is a problem. My initial color test were significantly different than the test I did after the Cube had shut down from overheating. It seems to be consistent in color thereafter yet not a match to the Dynalite. Grey balance on the Dynalite reads at 5670k with a green/magenta tint of .4 while the cube balances at 4551 and a tint of 10.6 which means the cube renders rather yellow green when mixed with conventional strobe or daylight. One additional note, be prepared to create your own color profile as it renders differently than than conventional strobe on a Canon 6D with generic Canon profiles. When used in Video mode the Cube gets extremely hot, in fact shuts itself off with an overheated indicator. At full power this happens rather quick, and become un-handleable to the touch. The battery does not last long in this mode. I recharged and retested at 50% power, it shut of just under 30 minutes from over heating, and in 30 minutes the battery was down to one bar.I will say that this product has great potential. I love the size and weight. The accessory adaptation seems to be well thought out. If shooting with only this light source, and with an appropriate color profile, it would be an extremely handy tool. It has very good power output and could be very useful in many applications, however I feel there are some refinements yet to be made. I hope the manufacture has a chance to read my comments.I wish I could recommend this product, in fact I wish I could buy 20 more to replace all of my heavy conventional gear, but so far I can not manage the imbalanced color to true daylight/strobe. If they can adjust the color, or show me that I have made an error, then I would purchase more and recommend to friends. The heat in video mode also needs to be addressed.
