Designed as a camera that is at home on productions as diverse as "Cinéma Vérité"-style documentaries, reality TV, commercial and corporate applications Sony's PXW-FS7 XDCAM Super 35 Camera System is a flexible 4K camera system. It features a Super 35mm size sensor that allows you to capture images with cinematic depth of field. The camera's E-mount is machined from stainless steel and allows you to use E-mount lenses or with the use of optional adapters to accept most 35mm lenses including PL, EF, Leica, and Nikon. The camera can capture footage to optional on-board XQD media cards in either DCI (4096 x 2160), UHD (3840 x 2160) at up to 60 FPS or HD at up to 180 FPS.

The camera records in your choice of XAVC-I, XAVC-L, or MPEG-2. However, MPEG-2 recording does not support the high data rates the camera is capable of generating when shooting in UHD, and is limited to recording HD video only. The camera incorporates Dual XQD media card slots that support simultaneous or relay recording. An ergonomically designed handgrip provides control of many of the camera's functions and features an adjustable length support arm.

XQD-G-E Card Firmware
To use the the faster XQD-G-E cards requires an update to firmware 4.00 available from the Sony website.
Firmware 2.0
The Firmware 2.0 update is installed on the camera, it is a free download and user install for camera owners who do not already have it installed in their camera. The firmware 2.0 update adds the following features to your camera:
  • 1.Expands audio recording to four channels audio at 24-bit, 48 KHz.
  • 2.Supports DCI compliant 4096 x 2160 XAVC-Intra-frame recording up to 60 fps.
  • 3.Adds HD Apple ProRes codecs to enable progressive and interlaced HQ and 422 recording.
  • 4.Eliminates "Magenta Cast" in WB preset mode.
  • 5.Renames "Color Temp

    " menu parameter to "Preset White"

  • 6.Eliminates need to re-enable "Steady Shot" after power ON/OFF cycle.
  • 7.Retains "Paint Menu" settings after power OFF/ON cycle.
The 4K Super35 EXMOR sensor features 14 Stops of latitude and a wide color gamut. It offers a choice of XAVC or MPEG-2 codecs. The XAVC codec can be used for 4K and HD recording, while MPEG-2 is limited to HD recording. XAVC comes in two flavors, XAVC INTRA, and XAVC Long, allowing you to encode from HD to UHD using Intra-Frame or Long GoP compression with 10-bit 422 for HD and the choice of 10-bit 422 or 8-bit 420 for UHD. XAVC intra compression is very efficient, recording at modest bit rates and XAVC Long also substantially extends the recording time while attaining very high quality and low noise.
The PXW-FS7 is equipped with an E-Mount machined from solid Stainless Steel for stability and strength. It accepts optional E-Mount lenses from Sony, Zeiss and other manufacturers. The shallow flange distance allows you to mount most 35mm lens types such as PL, DSLR and legacy SLR lenses including Canon EF, Leica, and Nikon as well as many others with mechanical adapters.
The camera body is made from magnesium, which is lighter and stronger than aluminum. This allows the camera body to weigh only four pounds. It's incorporates a shoulder pad and is designed to sit on the operator's shoulder or by extending the support arm of the SmartGrip to be held in front of the operator without requiring a support rig.
The camera includes an ergonomic handgrip that Sony calls a SmartGrip, which features Zoom, Start/Stop and Assign controls. The SmartGrip facilitates camera operation with the right hand, leaving the left hand free to operate the lens. Both the arm and handgrip can be positioned at different angles permitting great flexibility.
FS7 records internally in 4K up to 60fps in UHD 3840x2160 and in HD up to 180fps using XAVC-I or up to 120fps with XAVC-L. Recording Apple ProRes to the internal XQD slots requires an optional EXCA-FS7 extension box and future upgrade.
4K (4096 x 2160) is available when using an optional external recorder.
The camera features two XQD media slots that support simultaneous or relay recording. The camera also has an SD card slot that is only used for saving configuration data, and cannot be used to record video.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Holds up well on the big screen I reviewed this product a year ago, this is an update. While I use the camera for daily jobs, I also used the FS7 to shoot a feature film (Providence). I shot in 4K CINE-EI SLOG3 exclusively, with a 4 person crew. We screened it in a state of the art theater and I was 100% happy with the color and resolution of the image. On a whim we submitted the film to AMC Independent, were accepted and it is slated for a Valentines day weekend release in theaters around the country. If that isn't an endorsement of what the camera is capable of even in my semi talented hands, I don't know what is!

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Is the FS7 worth the money? Back in the fall of 2015 I bit the bullet and upgraded from my old faithful C100 to the Fs7. I myself do allot of commercial and narrative work and needed something that I could quickly set up and shoot with. I must say I am very impressed with this camera and with S-log3 I have plenty of latitude while grading in post. The image is superb but can be noisy at times, especially in the shadows. The menus before firmware 3.0 were honestly sluggish but since then they are much more responsive. I wont say this is a perfect camera but I do think it is the best bang for the buck under $10,000. If you are in the market for a camera that can live in both the ENG and cinema world this might be the buy for you.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic. I waited until a year after this camera was released to purchase it. I really wanted to see if it would live up to the hype. I can safely say, it does. This is the most excellent video camera I have ever used. The image is gorgeous, the specs are amazing, and overall performance is top notch. There is a very steep learning curve if you're planning on shooting in Custom mode, and I highly recommend renting Doug Jensen's FS7 Masterclass. It's the most informative resource I've found on this cameras operation. The menus are a bit on the crazy side, so make sure to set up s custom user menu and you'll have smooth sailing from there on out. I can not recommend this camera enough. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Incredible So there I was, about five seconds away from pre ordering the Ursa Mini 4.6k and something inside me told me to hold off. I saved a little more money and purchased the Sony FS7 instead. Best decision I've ever made. This camera is absolutely incredible. Cine EI finally gives me the proper non-yellow skin tones I've been waiting for from a Sony camera. 10-Bit color, 60 fps in 4k, 180 fps in HD, and built in LUTS. What more could I want with a camera? The video files work great in premiere, don't bog up my computer, and they grade nicely. All in all I am very pleased with this camera. Coming from a Sony a7s ii I was lost in these new menus. But after watching Doug Jensen's masterclass I learned quickly what this camera is all about. It takes some time to get the hang of how the camera operates. But once you learn it, you wont forget it.

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great to have handgrip, BUT... First impression - wow. Great pictures quality, easy to use and learn, especially if you came from any other Sony's camcorder. However, and I hope you already know that, be ready to spend a LOT for the extra stuff. Today I discovered that I need spend an extra cash in order to be able... guess what - put my camera on the tripod. To make story short - there is no way to slide the camera on/off the Manfrotto 502HD video head without removing FS7's handgrip. Here is a short video explaining the problem: ---------------. Otherwise, I love the camera.

    Rated 3 out of 5 by from Right camera, wrong sensor/lens mount At first I thought that this might be the camera I have been waiting for. On further inspection I was disappointed to see that they abandoned the time tested pro power zoom lenses in B4 or PH mounts. SLR type lens mounts that are spring held are fine for short slr lenses but will not support big power zoom lenses. These need a breech locking mount common on all the old ENG style cameras.Smaller sensors on those cameras also gave them considerable reach. It is doubtful that we will see any really fast, long power zoom lenses for this camera due to the limitations of the mount and necessary image size coverage.

It is much heavier than my c100 so I wouldn't think about using my glidecam with this beast. then again... maybe. The high speed is so great. I love it. Comparing the image side-by-side with my c100 I find them very similar in resolution to detail in the image, even in UHD.I give this 4 stars because the noise issues they need to fix with their high speed image. I dislike the fact that 2000 iso is the minimum iso for s-log3. My biggest complaint with Sony is how hard it is to go and change iso and white balance. sure there are presets you can adjust, but it would be nice to easily dial down your iso and white balance at ease like the Canon C line. Plus, the metabones superspeed ultra doesn't read the iris change from my 50mm 1.2 ... all the other lenses I have tried worked besides the 50mm 1.2

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camera, versatile One of the best cameras to come out in a while as far as specs+pricing. It will take you about two days to get familiar with all of the menu options - but once you get the hang of it, you're hooked. The new firmware (3.0) gets rid of the slow/delayed menu and adds interval recording for some easy to set up timelapses. I highly recommend this camera for people transitioning from DSLRs and for people who want internal 4K, slo-mo and a great image.
