Blackmagic Design CONVMCAUDS Overview

The Mini Converter Audio to SDI 4K from Blackmagic Design allows you to embed four channels of analog audio or eight channels of AES/EBU digital audio into any SDI video signal. It features a 6G-SDI input that accepts resolutions up to Ultra HD (3840x2160) and DCI 4K (4096x2160), and provides four 1/4" audio jack connectors for inputting and embedding your analog or digital audio channels. The SDI signal with embedded audio is output over a single 6G-SDI connector, with the resolution and frame rate matching the original input source.

Using 6G-SDI technology, the Mini Converter supports UHD and DCI 4K resolutions at up to 30 fps. The Mini Converter also supports Single Link SD, HD, and 3G-SDI signals, automatically detecting and switching between the different formats. A redundant SDI input is provided as an optional back up; with the converter switching over if the main SDI input is lost.

The Mini Converter's settings are controlled using the built-in DIP switches or via USB using the included software for Max OS X or Windows computers. The USB port also enables the firmware to be updated. For powering the device, a 12 VDC power supply is included with international socket adapters.

Like the other Blackmagic Mini Converters it's a simple solution. Not unlike it's counterparts the USB connection offers some good controls like level sliders for each input. A great feature of these and the other BM Mini Converters with audio inputs is not only the ability to take in AES but when in that mode they can also accept coaxial SPDIF with a simple rca to 1/4" adapter.

When would you or wouldn't you use the "Sample Rate Conversion" with this product? Not familiar with this feature, thanks for the help?
Asked by: Las
I am not sure what you mean by "sample rate conversion" but I use this the mini audio to SDI convertor to insert analog audio that gets converted to digital and placed into the SDI signal path. Without this convertor, the audio could not be included in an SDI signal.

What audio input cable am I shopping for? Is this a TRS? I want to output from our Allen & Heath mixer's XLR.
Asked by: Adam
Hello, If you have XLRM outputs from your mixer you will need XLR female to 1/4" TRS cables. This is what I use and it works fine.

Can you delay the audio to sync with the video? Looking to use without a computer. Audio from Mixer and Video from PTZ Camera. I will need to sync the audio, can this be done?
Asked by: John
From working with this device, there is no way of delaying the audio source at all.. You can change the setting to where the analog audio is being set to the SDI stream. Like 1-4 or 5-8, etc Hope this helps.

Can I use a second one of these to convert audio back to analog?
Asked by: Nathan
No, this device embeds audio onto the video signal. You would need a de-embedder to do this. The Blackmagic SDI to HDMI converter ( B&H part# BLSDIHDMIMC) does this while also giving you a HDMI output. It will output either analog audio or AES/EBU digital audio. We have used these with great success.

The manual implies this is "yes" but I'd like confirmation. After embedding 8 channels of AES/EBU into SDI on Channels 1-8, can I output the SDI into another BMD Audio to SDI Mini and embed another 8 channels of AES/EBU audio into 9-16... outputting a single SDI cable with all 16 channels of AES and video?
Asked by: Alex
Absolutely, I do this quite often. Just some simple dip switch settings.
