Leica X (Typ 113) overview

  • 1Description

Embracing high quality imaging and compact forms, Leica's X (Typ 113) Digital Camera packs in a large 16.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and marries it to a Summilux 23mm f/1.7 ASPH. Lens that will provide users with spectacular images and an equivalent field of view to the iconic 35mm frame. The camera also shows off Leica's brilliant Made in Germany design with a sleek black body with a brown leatherette trim. Furthering the camera's capabilities is a physical control ring located on the lens barrel, offering tactile manual focusing during shooting. The wide f/1.7 aperture then adds more creative possibilities by allowing photographer's to take control of their depth-of-field and take in more light for low-light shooting.

Merging a variety of different technologies, this camera is able to capture remarkable stills at up to 5 fps in the raw DNG file format as well as Full HD 1080p video at up to 20 fps. On top of this, it can utilize sensitivities of up to ISO 12500 for sharp, clear photos in less-than-ideal lighting conditions. In addition to manual focus, this camera does come equipped with an 11-point AF system that will quickly and accurately lock onto your subjects.

Composing and reviewing images is done via the rear 3.0" 920k-dot TFT LCD screen. This display has a wide viewing angle and 100% coverage so shooters will know exactly what they are going to capture and will not be misled when shooting at angles. Users can also pick up an optional optical or electronic viewfinder to further their comfort during use.

The camera records images and video to an SD, SDHC, or SDXC card. Also, the compact lightweight magnesium and aluminum body is reminiscent of their classic M rangefinders.

Taking cutting-edge digital design and merging it with art, Leica has teamed up with Italian fashion label Moncler to produce a truly stunning version of the Leica X (Typ 133) that embraces the design firm's French heritage and melds perfectly with Leica's precise German engineering. The brilliant design and imaging capabilities make this special edition a perfect partner for the fashion-conscious and photography minded. Only 1,500 of these cameras have been produced, each with a matching case and padded white pouch that emulate the look of Moncler's world-famous down jackets. And, the included leather carrying strap bears a "Leica & Moncler" inscription.

Leica X (Typ 113) reviews

X (Typ 113) Digital Camera (Silver) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from X marks the spot I mostly shoot the Leica M2, 50 cron (35mm film). Digital cameras in general, have not been great experiences for me. The X however, is impressive. The quality of this camera is very high and it represents the brand well, exceeding my expectations with the quality of the images, simplicity and sturdiness of the controls, and as silly as it may seem, the compatibility with my classic SBLOO 35mm OVF. The X has the potential to separate your subject from the background, and it does this beautifully. The straight from the camera JPEGs in standard color and high contrast black and white are excellent. Purchasing from B&H is always a pleasure. I highly recommend the Leica X and B&H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Purist Simplicity Fixed prime. Snap shot street. Move to the image. Black and white. Back to basics. Quality. Photos first. This camera has changed the way I take photos. I love it. The image quality is pure Leica greatness. If you love photography you will love this camera. If you are feature first type of shooter look for another camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I've been happy with it. I've owned the X-113 over a year now and am still learning about its abilities and how to use it well. It very much emulates a 35mm film camera and can be unforgiving at times, but the digital helps and experimentation work that out. I've used it mostly for photos of my young children and close-up nature photography. Its excelled at both to the extent that I've had almost no professional images taken. The video is a nice bonus. I do have an issue with the lens cap which is too easy to mis-align the threads, causing capping to be problem, and wish the lower body of the camera were sturdier. An accident small drop made the door to the battery and memory card very hard to open and in need of repair.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best X yet! I was introduced to Leica several years back when I originally purchased an X1. I loved that camera for its simplicity and amazing image quality, however was not happy with it's operational speed, terrible display, high ISO performance and low light capabilities. I moved on to Leica M system to address those issues. When Leica announced the X type 113 I was intrigued however was put off by the very negative reviews. Well, fast forward, I recently purchased one and have to say it is exactly what I was hoping for. Leica has addressed all the deficiencies of the original with a much faster lens, much quicker operation, much improved ISO performance and an excellent rear display while the simplicity of the original remaining intact. Manual assist is also much improved with excellent clarity. The image quality is simply stunning. It rivals my Leica M-E when pared with my Skopar M 35 2.5 lens at base ISO and beats it beyond ISO 800. Yes it does automatically change the aperture when the subject is too close (about 1 m) but nothing to be overly concerned about. Depth of field is plenty when this close anyway. The colors, the draw, the white balance is amazing. The lens has that Leica look and pop. It is the perfect size and weight for a high performance camera. One additional feature that lacked on the original was video capability and this one has it. It can auto focus and manual focus during video mode. The quality is more than acceptable. Overall I am very pleased with my purchase and would highly recommend one if you are on the fence. You will love it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Leica is more than the sum of it's This camera is getting an unfair amount of criticism. A little background. I am a serious hobbyist who has enjoyed photography from the age of 14. I have owned my fair share of high end digital cameras. Fuji X-Pro 1, Leica X2, Nikon D610, Nikon D90. This camera is equal parts elegant, gorgeous design and practical German functionality. This camera is designed to be a no frills, focus on the photographic experience. The camera is going to give you what you are capable of getting out of it. I am baffled by the discussion that is brewing about the aperture setting automatically adjusts in certain conditions. I am willing to give the engineers and designers at Leica the benefit of the doubt as I am neither an engineer nor a designer, however, I can attest to the fact that the camera performs incredibly well. The Summilux lens is tack sharp, it has incredible low light capability. I travel a great deal for work and I find that this camera affords me the greatest balance of size, experience and performance. Honestly, Leica isn't for everyone. I can appreciate that and I think each photographer should seek to find the camera that gives him or her the best opportunity to join the art of photography. For some of us, the additional experience of owning and shooting a Leica is deeper than technical specs or performance reviews. If you are someone who enjoys quality of experience over quantity of capability, I think you will really find this camera won't let you down. I collect vintage film cameras and each of them has a story. Some of my favorites are hardly technical wonders, my Ricoh auto-half for example, but they were designed in such a way that they made you appreciate the capacity design has to leave it's impact on you. Apple understands this. BMW understands this. Omega understands this and Leica understands this.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No viewfinder - No deal A 2K+ camera with no viewfinder! That's nuts. I love the manual lens on this camera, now if Leica could just gather their act and understand that cameras since the dawn of time contain a viewfinder we'd be all set. Why can't camera makers realize that serious photograohers (and old school photogs) desire an eye level finder!! For god sake, they could fit them into the 35mm compacts they can fit them into these cameras too! Stop being cheap and do it. They will then sell like hot cakes.
