This device is very helpful in performing backups. I have tried the BlackArmor from Seagate and have had performance issues and failures. This device has exceeded my expectations.

is there a limit to drive size for this unit? can it handle 2x18tb for example? has anyone tested Raid 1 on large drives?
According to the manufacture, the Buffalo 8TB DriveStation Duo should work with larger drive sizes, but they have not tested it with any drives other than the ones that ship with the enclosure, so there is currently no hard line spec on larger drive capacity, and, they also have said that removing the origional drives may void the warranty, so while we believe you could use 18TB drives in this enclosure, it may not be the best enclosure for the job.

question
I am looking for an external storage solution (just like this item) that i can plug into both my windows pc and mac laptop via usb, and just access the unit as a storage drive. Am looking to use it regularly to store my photography library (store all the photos and use adobe softwares using pictures that are on the external unit). Is this the best unit for this, or is a different unit recommended?I am also looking at the:OWC / Other World Computing Mercury Elite Pro Dual 4TB (2 x 2TB) Two-Bay USB 3.0 RAID Solutionhttp://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1214376-REG/owc_other_world_computing_owcmed3fr7t04_0_mercury_elite_pro_dual.html#qaIs this item better than the OWC unit?
What I would honestly suggest is placing a device on your network vs having each device plugged into it via USB. I know that Seagate makes a BlackArmor NAS device that works well via the network. Else purchase a Seagate Backup Plus external drive for each pc/mac to back it up.
