Epson V850 overview

  • 1Description

Convert film, slides, prints, and other documents into high resolution digital images with the Perfection V850 Pro Scanner from Epson. The high 6400 dpi optical resolution and 6400 x 9600 dpi scan resolution along with a 48-bit color depth ensure fine detail will be captured and colors will be accurately reproduced. Also, a rating of 4.0 Dmax allows users to capture a wide dynamic range.

Productivity sees a boost due to the ReadyScan LED light source which can warm up in less than 1 second to immediately start scanning. The V850 features a reflective scan area of 8.5 x 11.7" as well as an 8 x 10" built-in transparency unit for scanning film. Digital ICE technologies further benefit scanning by automatically removing dust, hair, scratches, and fingerprints from film and prints. Included with the scanner are two sets of four film holders - for 35mm slides, 35mm film, 35mm mounted slides, and 4 x 5" film - and SilverFast SE Plus 8 and X-Rite i1 Scanner software. Additionally, the V850 has USB 2.0 connectivity.

    Epson V850 reviews

Perfection V850 Pro Scanner is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 103.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Salvation for Large Format Films I have more than forty years of large format images that can only be printed with good ol' dodge and burn; it was good enough for Ansel Adams, but I lack his skills and patience. Local sources charge an arm and a leg for a single scan, and the results are uncertain. Every afternoon I go to the darkroom (old habits are difficult to break) and scan in a few images; now that I have sorted out the negative size/dpi conundrum, each scan takes ten or fifteen minutes, and they are very clear. If you are doing mostly medium-miniature format get one of the less expensive scanners - the film holders are awkward and flimsy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Quality - Great Investment I am using the V850 scanner for digitizing slides, negatives and printed photos. It has great breadth in tonal quality, allowing me to bring out deep shadow texture that I had not realized was there. Although my original plan was to use the Epson Scan software, which is very good, I have since become hooked on the SilverFast software. It allows for easier adjustment of color and tone. Most importantly it allows me to select to perform two scans per scan rather than one as permitted in Epson Scan, thus proving a better result. It also allows the use of its dust and scratch remover for old Kodachrome slides, which are a problem with Epson Scan. The V850 is a great invest and will provide me with excellent scans for many years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Scans Come Easily Being a graphic artist the scanner is used for every kind of scan from line art to an occasional negative or transparency. Getting the Silverfish software with this scanner makes scanning fast and accurate with it's reflective and transparency color targets to get the color balance extremely close on your initial scan. The Silverfish workflow makes the scanning process painless. Going from reflective copy to transparencies is simple. The speed of the scans is much faster than my previous scanner. My only wish would be the same scanner in a larger size. Whether you need the scanner for art and design or transferring photos, negatives and slides to digital files the V850 is very impressive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5 Stars Based on Price for Quality This is a great scanner, but there are better, and there are many variables to consider. However, I'd say this is by far the best flatbed scanner on the market! That is a big deal in its own right. I scan 35mm and 4x5 film...mostly 35mm. Shy of a Hasselblad Flextight, for $10k plus, or a second hand Nikon 5000ED for $+or-, the Epson performs quite well! The film holders are an improvement from previous models, but they are still a little clumsy. They are sturdy, however, and you get a double set in the box. The 35mm holders can take up to 18 frames though, and that's super convenient. All in all I'd buy this scanner again. Start up time is super quick, it's quiet and produces quality results!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Terrific scanner; Silverfast, not so much This is an excellent scanner, and I'd recommend it to anyone. Does an excellent job of positives, negatives, and slides. The downside is Silverfast; I've never been able to get it to work. However, the Epson scanning software works well enough that Silverfast isn't really necessary. The only thing that I'd want Epson to change is to sell additional holders for film, slides, 120, etc. as accessories. Especially if someone has a very large quantity of items to scan. It would speed up the process. It would also be nice if the scannable area was larger, like 11x17.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great with some needed solfware improvements I have had the v850 for 4weeks now I am very satisfied with the hardware, I like the hole and pin alignment which now come in connection with all slide film holders. The Epson software is a little quirky. at least on the Mac OS, the buttons which control the software do not always show up completely. Meaning there is a rectangle selection button with NO TITLES they are opaque but do work? The other problem with the Epson software are the buttons under the professional Mode do not always show up i.e. Ice, dust removal? If I restart the application and start over that usually corrects it but it is irritating. I have always been somewhat challenged with using the third party software from Germany perhaps I need to take a class, I can never seem to get as good a result as with the Epson software when it is working correctly. All and all I really do like the new v850 Scanner.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from FIX THE FILM HOLDERS! Great scanner, wonderful new light source, lousy film holders! I use this for scanning prints, slides and negatives - holding the film and transparencies flat and in the right place, without damaging them, is ESSENTIAL. Everyone criticizes the holders, especially medium and large format. So fix them, already!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from epson perfection 850 scanner The first thing I noticed was the size. I was using the epson 550 scanner before the 850. The 850 epson scanner is twice the thickness and no longer fits in the space the other scanner did. The scanner is fast but if I was to do it over again I would have got the 800 because of price difference. The software needs to be upgraded, free, in order to get the best performance out of the box. I like the scanner but regret paying so much. If your a pro this is the one, but if you do this as a hobby look elsewhere.
