Great scans with VueScan by Hamrick Software. Personally, I find it more user-friendly than SilverFast.

Easy to use. The Best.

Great for scanning negs. not drum scan quality but pretty darn close. I use it with View Scan software.

I bought the V850 Pro Scanner, so that I can scan 8 x 10 inch negatives. I'm a local historian at a library which has over 1000 historic negatives. So far I give the V850 5 stars.

I got this to archive some of my 50 years of analog photographs for an upcoming book project. Mostly B&W negs but some color negs. So far if seems to do the job. See the attached scans from color negs.

Good for large format, useless for 120 film

When you pay $1300 for a film scanner, you expect everything to work flawlessly. Especially since their model down, the V600, is great as is. The only reason anyone would really consider the upgrade is in order to scan large format negatives. And it does that fantastically well. However, to my disappointment, and complete surprise, the 120 film holder doesn't actually hold 120 film. When I forced it into the 120 holder, the edges of my negative bent. It's important to note that the design of the 120 film holder for this scanner is complete different than the V600. On the V600, it was a breeze loading and unloading. This scanner makes it the opposite experience of that- a nightmare. Can you get scans of your medium format negatives with this scanner? Yeah, it's humanly possible. But just really unpleasant, and pain. If you're just doing medium format scans, I highly recommend the V600, which is 1/4 the price.

Useless - No longer supported by Epson

They haven't written any new drivers for this machine since OS-10. It was a good machine, until I wasn't able to use it anymore. Which kind of defeats the purpose of having it! The kicker is that they say OS-11 and above are new drivers, but they aren't. It's the same driver as for OS-10. That's insulting. This is the last Epson product I'll own.

Great scanner but there's a learning curve

I've used this scanner for the past 6 years and have done thousands of neg scans with no malfunctions. The best option for neg scanning short of an expensive drum scanner. I could not get the Epson software to produce decent scans so have consistently used Silverfast. You will get better end results if you learn Silverfast thoroughly and adjust your images with it as close to perfect as possible in the scanning phase then use Photoshop, Lightroom, etc. later for finishing touches. Do some tests of the neg holders to determine which height setting produces the sharpest results, then tape those little sliders in place so they don't accidentally shift in the future. Haven't tried wet mounting (too time consuming for the number of negs I had to scan) but find that the scans with the regular film holders are plenty sharp.

It is supposed to give slightly better sharpness. However, the difference is negligible compared to the v700 series without it.

I have read that for the highest quality 35mm negative scanning, a dedicated negative/slide scanner like the PlusTek OpticFilm 8200i Ai is better than a flatbed scanner like the Epson Perfection V850 Pro Scanner. Does anyone have experience comparing them?
Asked by: Paul L.
In general it is best for 35mm slides to use a dedicated film scanner over a flat bed scanner. Like some of these, https://bhpho.to/3VHAOzd .
