Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Offering a wide angle of view for full frame cameras, the Nikon F mount Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD Lens is a fast wide-angle zoom lens with Vibration Compensation. The f/2.8 maximum aperture performs well in low-light situations, and provides a shallow depth of field for selective focus. Further benefitting the lens is the VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization, which helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake to enable the use of longer shutter speeds or smaller apertures when hand-holding in low-light conditions. XGM and LD glass elements reduce chromatic aberrations and help ensure sharp and clear imagery. eBAND and BBAR coatings render uniform colors and reduce ghosting and flare, while a fluorine coating on the front element helps repel water or contaminants.

A USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) autofocus motor provides quick and precise focusing performance, with high torque, low response times, and quiet operation to benefit both still and video applications. Additionally, a full-time manual focus mechanism enables manual fine-tuning of focus at any point, even when the AF system is engaged.

Image Quality
Comprised of 18 elements in 13 groups, including an XGM (eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical) element placed at the front group and several LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements in the system, aberrations such as geometrical distortion and lateral color are efficiently compensated for, enabling the zoom lens to deliver quality imagery throughout the entire range from corner to corner.
BBAR and eBAND Coatings
BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coating renders uniformity in transmissivity across the critical bandwidths. Coupled with the eBAND coating, ghosting and flare typically observed on ultra wide-angle lenses are efficiently eliminated, resulting in sharper and clearer images.
VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization mechanism which reduces the effects of camera shake to deliver sharp images in low light and at slower shutter speeds. It is a newly developed three coil system that employs a lighter moving coil mechanism which contributes to its improved performance and overall compact design.
Ultrasonic Motor
USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) Motor is the power for a fast and quiet autofocus drive that works in harmony with the continuous manual focus mechanism.
XGM and LD Glass Elements
An eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical element and Low Dispersion elements in the front group minimize chromatic aberrations and help ensure clear and sharp imagery.
Lens Hood
A built-in lens hood helps block out unwanted light, preventing lens flare, as well as protecting the lens's front element.
A rounded 9-blade diaphragm produces an aesthetic out-of-focus quality that is especially beneficial when working with selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.
SILKYPIX Developer Studio for Tamron
The SILKYPIX software provides allows you to generate quality images from RAW data, while performing adjustments to reflect your personal style. These include white balance, color, sharpness, and the tonal curves recorded by digital cameras. The SILKYPIX Developer Studio for Tamron provides a range of functions, in addition to the basic adjustment capabilities, such as correcting aberrations (lateral color, distortion, relative illumination fall-off) referring to the optical design data.

    Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 reviews

SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 94.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp Lens for a Steal of a Deal!! I bought this lens mainly for interior room design photography. So far it has surpassed all my expectations. Very sharp lens! Minimal distortion at 15mm. I really wanted to get the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G. But from reading all the reviews out there, this lens for the price just made sense. I waited a long time for this lens to be in stock for the Nikon body. BH Photo as always, delivered this item in two days for FREE! I have below, some samples of my work. I shot these images at 15mm f/8.0, 1/3 shutter, ISO 100 with my Nikon D4s on a tripod. BTW, this lens has fast AF. Fast enough to follow my hyper puppy! I'm glad with this purchase! The money I saved from not getting the Nikon is now being spent on a super nice Induro tripod/Arca Swiss ball head combo!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Image Quality This is an excellent and very sharp lens. I just used it on my trip to Berlin, FRG and it performed magnificently under a variety of light conditions. Focuses very easily both indoor and outdoors and in low-light environments. I am 67 years old and the weight of the lens, although a bit heavy, did not bothered me much--walked an average of about 6 miles/day during my Berlin trip and the camera (with lens) was around my neck some 40% of the time. The VC works extremely well and is a welcome addition to an ultra wide lens. If you are into landscape and architectural photography I think this is a phenomenal piece of glass. As always, kudos to B&H for their great pricing and service!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smooth, Great Detail on Picture Capture I recently purchased this lens. It's my first non-Nikon Lens in over twenty years. On the initial trial of the lens, its smooth and works well with my Nikon camera. I was very disappointed that the Lens did not come with a case. Tamron, I spent over a 1000 dollars on this lens and no lens case? Give it a break. Nikon has that right. I have purchased the case that B&H recommended and will write a review on that. The Lens is made in Japan and is well made. Looking forward to seeing what I can do with this lens. I have shared a picture so you can see how well it captured the detail with my Nikon D750

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely love it - heavy, excellent for traveling Absolutely love this piece of equipment. Saves a lot of time to capture shots which otherwise would have been panorama only. It is heavy and I use it with the Photodiox CPL filter. Works very well. Filter is not fully scratch resistant. Both the Tamron and the photodiox filter occupy comfortably the space which was previously reserved for the camera with lens. Thus, make sure your backpack is up to speed. Am using this for travlling and am taking about 2/3 of my shots with this lens. The angles of view are just amazing. And you standa a lot closer to any object than the other people who try to take the same shot. Quick lens, very sharp. As long as you can cope with the weight, this is the fast lens to get.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Always Test! First lens was returned w/ huge problems. B&H great as usual. The second seems to be good. Only used one night so far, star photos show very good coma control all the way to edges. That is strong for a lens of this wide a view. It will focus past infinity. That is very important for astronomy work. Focus is smooth and easy to do in small adjustments even in the cold. Quite a good impression in an admittedly short time of use. Seems very close to the Nikkor competition as far as sharpness @ center. Recommended by Thom Hogan, and now me!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super sharp I ordered this lens to shoot landscapes, some macro wildlife, etc. After owning this lens for a couple weeks, these are my first impressions. 1) This lens is super sharp. I almost always shoot wide open, and it is tack sharp. 2) The VC is surprisingly helpful. I don't like shooting at higher ISOs, so I tried shooting indoors at night with a low ISO, wide open, and a really slow shutter speed with the VC turned on....like 1/25 and slower while handheld. Images were turning out surprisingly sharp! 3) The ability to zoom to 30mm and the constant large aperture make this useable for a wider angle portrait lens. 4) Bokeh seems really nice and smooth. 5) Autofocus is fast and accurate. In short, I'm in love with this lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you dig ultrawides and want the best performance. . . I shoot primarily nature and landscapes and I'm excited about this lens. The early shots I made with it last week were razor with minimal distortion. The performance matches the multiple reviews on the internet and in the photography magazines that posit the notion this is the best ultra wide angle zoom in the world. Again, the downsides are weight and bulk, and the difficulty using filters, though the latter is of little concern to me. The filter I use most is a polarizer, and while there is not an absolute contraindication to the use of polarizers on an ultra wide (perhaps on an overcast day attempting to control glare on water or foliage), practically speaking, a polarizer is of little use on a lens like this IMHO. Construction is solid, and it balances nicely on my D810.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens I bought this lens specifically for night photography and Aurora photos. I have not been disappointed! I love that you get some zoom and the 2.8 is of course good for the low light conditions. What I found most helpful though was the ease of focusing to infinity which has been an issue with other lenses I have used. It is a heavy lens but it doesn't try to hide that. For me, its not an issue as it is always mounted on a tripod. I dont carry it over my neck for any extended period of time but it is quite a beast. Based on reviews, it see me comparable to the Nikon 12-24 but at a much more affordable price. I look forward to see I what else it can do!
