Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

A versatile wide-angle zoom for Nikon DX-format DSLRs, the AT-X 11-20mm f/2.8 PRO DX Lens from Tokina offers a 16.5-30mm equivalent focal length and features a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture for maintained brightness throughout the zoom range. One P-MO hybrid aspherical element and two glass-molded aspherical element work in tandem to minimize distortions and control various aberrations while three SD ultra-low dispersion elements reduce chromatic aberrations for increased clarity. A multi-layer lens coating has also been applied to further enhance overall light transmission and color accuracy by suppressing lens flare and ghosting. Well-suited to working in a wide variety of situations, this ultra-wide zoom covers an array of wide-angle perspectives while maintaining consistent illumination for working in challenging lighting.

Benefitting the usability, a one-touch focusing clutch permits quick switching between autofocus and manual focus modes, and an internal focusing design maintains the overall length of the lens during use. The medium-torque focusing ring further benefits precise handling by allowing for refined control when manually focusing. Additionally, this lens sees the incorporation of a nine-blade diaphragm, which contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality when employing shallow depth of field shooting techniques.

Compatible with Nikon DX-format DSLRs, this wide-angle zoom provides a 16.5-30mm equivalent focal length and features a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture for consistent low-light performance throughout the zoom range.
One P-MO hybrid aspherical element in the front group pairs with two glass-molded aspherical elements in the rear group to minimize distortions and correct aberrations. Additionally, three SD ultra-low dispersion elements are also incorporated within the lens design to further reduce chromatic aberrations for greater color accuracy and clarity.
Multi-layer lens coatings reduce lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and maintained color fidelity.
A one-touch focus clutch mechanism permits seamless switching between autofocus and manual focusing positions, and the focusing ring features a moderate amount of torque for more fine-tuned control over the focusing position.
An internal focusing mechanism maintains the overall lens form factor during operation.
A nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth out-of-focus quality, which benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.

    Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 reviews

    AT-X 11-20mm f/2.8 PRO DX Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 77.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive lens Using this with a D7000, the lens focuses correctly using phase and contrast focus. This sharpness of this lens is impressive! Distortion is reasonable, from almost no distortion at 20mm to noticeable barrel distortion at 11mm. Lightroom and Photoshop ACR easily remove distortion and correct vignetting with the lens correction profile for this lens. Since I take my camera out to the bush, I like using a protection filter. The B+W MRC 007 clear filter works fine with this lens with no perceptible vignetting caused by the filter.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great lens but back focusing issues (Nikon D5500) Great lens at a really good price but has focusing issues on my Nikon D5500. Auto focus using the viewfinder does not work satisfactorily (usually focuses behind what I want in focus). Interestingly enough, focusing in live view mode works. This is my second copy with the same issue and I am wondering at this point if it is a design flaw, 2 bad copies in a row, or just the lens/camera combination that's not working together. Still waiting on some insight from B&H customer service. Too bad, otherwise a sharp, fast lens that produces great pictures wide open if focused in live view mode or manually. Haven't made up my mind yet if I can live with it or if I have to send it back.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for landscapes I like this lens. It is fast, sharp, and unlike most, I like its weight. It does have a tiny bit of a flare when shooting in sun's direction. Also, I am still trying to figure out how in the world it works with my D7100. P and A modes make this lens try some really weird stuff, with the lens sometimes trying to take long exposures when I'm in the daylight. Also, if you want to take pictures of people, make sure they're in the center of the lens since the sides to stretch the faces out a bit. All in all, if you want a nice lens for picturesque shooting, this is a great choice!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens at a great price! I spent a great deal of time researching and agonizing over which UWA zoom to buy to use with my D7200. My inclination was to go with Nikon, but was dissuaded by a number of less than stellar reviews. The Tokina 11-20 Pro DX has a bargain price, comparatively and with a 2.8 aperture is faster than the Nikon offerings. I did have concerns that others had raised about Tokina's quality control and was hoping to get a good copy. My lens arrived promptly from B&H the day after ordering and all concerns were allayed after several days of taking trial shots. I am mostly interested in shooting landscapes and have been pleased with image quality and the lens build. Will be looking forward to capturing great travel images using this lens!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I Was Not Satisfied In my case, I sent the lens back for a refund. It functioned on my D7100, but not as I wished. While testing revealed no back focus problems, I found that for other tests, the colors were very flat and washed out. I did see the usual corner/border resolution issues, but I also witnessed center resolution issues as well. I did my testing on subjects using live view. Pictures attained from both auto-focus and manual via live view were not pleasing at all. I am guessing that my copy was not a good one. I am a 45 year plus photography hobbiest; hence one cannot say it did not work out due to some sort is mistake on my part. I hope your experience will be better.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Backfocus and soft center The first copy I got from B&H had a back focus problem. I exchanged it, and the second copy was worse. Not only was the back focus more severe, but the lens also had significant center softness. I returned the second copy for a refund. The second copy had also obviously already been taken out of the box as the bag in which the lens comes was crinkled and the lens cap was not securely fashioned when I picked it up from B&H's returns/exchange window on 34th street. Had someone else already returned the lens because of its flaws? If so, it is rather troubling that B&H would have tried to sell it to me. I give the lens 2 stars because I see its potential. But you have to get a good copy, and that is not so easy to do.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lens bacfocuses on both of my cameras I wanted this lens to be used on my d7200 for a travel and landscape lens since it is small and light in weight. I have tested the lens out on my d7200 and d810 and got the same back focus issue. The lens required at least a -18 auto focus fine tune to eliminate the back focus. This is too large of back focus problem so I have sent the lens to Tokina USA for an adjustment or repair to match up better with my d7200. The lens seems very sharp using live view, is built really well and has a smooth zoom ring. The auto focus to manual focus operation is not a smooth operation with the focus ring needing wiggled at times to engage it from auto focus to manual focus. I figured it better for me to send the lens to Tokina instead of exchanging it for another lens that may also not work well with my d7200.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great wide angle lens for the price I was looking for a wide angle lens for my Nikon D7000 for landscape photography and I found this lens. initially I considered tokina 11-16, but after reading the reviews of 11-20 decided to buy this lens. The good thing about this lens is it covers very wide angle and the price. If you want to buy the same lens from Nikkor, you have pay the twice the amount. So for I have noticed some glare in the photos but its negligible. The biggest problem i am seeing now is auto focus. It does not focus properly on auto focus. Currently managing with the manual focus, planning to check with tokina whether they can help.
